Can't Get Rid of Bad Diaper Rash!!

My 7 month old son has had a bad diaper rash with a yeast infection for a month. Originally I took him to urgent care because it was a Saturday. The doctor there prescribed him an antifungal cream and said to use it for 7 days. It didn't clear up so I took him to his pediatrician who prescribed him Vusion. I used it for two weeks and it would go away after a few days and then come back. The tube is all used up and the rash is back with a vengeance! I let him air out every now and then by letting him hang out with no diaper on. I also have been changing him frequently so that the wetness doesn't sit on his little bootie. He has poo diapers like 6 times a day, so it's hard not to keep wiping him. I am using Pampers unscented with aloe wipes and have tried desitin, A+D, and aveeno over the counters. I don't know what to do to get rid of it once and for all! Does anyone know of a remedy that will work? Thanks mamas!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the responses! I took him back to his pediatrician yesterday and they prescribed him vusion again and said to combine it with Aveeno diaper rash cream (because it contains zinc). They pinned it down to a virus (because he has mucous in his diapers) and said the virus is irritating his bootie. I have stopped using wipes and just wash him with warm water and my hand, pat it dry with a washcloth and then blowdry his bottom with the cool button. It seriously looks better already! Thanks again for the wonderful advice :-)

Hi...I know that when my son would have the rashes, I would pour on the cornstarch. I usually used the cornstarch powder, just be careful about it getting up around his head. He also responded to the A & D brand ointment, along with the cornstarch. I have also had my ped tell me to use Lotrimin AF...in the footcare isle at the store. Its an anti-fungal, and it has worked at times. Good luck, and you might try using the shower and mild baby soap after poopy pants for a while, I used my hand and soap, which is gross, but there is no texture to rub his already sore skin.

Hey M.,
I have been a child care provider for almost 28 years and have found that the diapers you use can cause diaper rash and a lot of people don't think about that. It may not be because of that in your case because of the yeast, but it may be irritating the situation. Diapers with a lot of perfume are terrible, and pampers are the WORST. Some kids can tolerate them, many cannot. I never use them, I just don't want to take the chance. It does sound like something he is eating is causing the yeast especially since it is recurrent. Butt Paste works great and stays on well without having to be scrubbed off. I would see the doc and ask him/her which foods may be the cause, and please don't use Pampers!
God bless,
V.

Sounds like it might be an allergy of some sort - something he ate/keeps eating (or something you eat if you're breastfeeding), wipes, diapers, even whatever creme you're using on the rash to clear it up!
Lots of the diaper cremes are pretty toxic in terms of allergy-causing ingredients. Check out www.cosmeticsdatabase.com to find out about the stuff you're using.
Switching from disposable diapers (which are convenient but also filled with toxic chemicals) to cloth might do the trick.
Good luck!

I think I'd see my pediatrician about this. Something must be going on here---could he be allergic to the baby wipes? Are you using unscented ones? If you're using cloth diapers, switch to disposables, and vice versa. Try and different diaper rash product? But seriously, go see your pediatrician--maybe the yeast isn't gone yet or it's some other dermatitis issue.

Hey M. ~

I am so sorry for your little guy. Couple of things. Not sure if he is eating baby food yet, but it sounds like he might be having a reaction to something he is eating. Maybe diary products. Also, regarding the rash, I use Arbonne baby diaper rash cream. It has been a dream, clears up any rash my son had within a day or 2. I even used it on his bad exzema and it cleared that up too. If you are interested in trying it, i'd be happy to send you a sample of the baby line that includes the diaper rash cream. Here is my email address to contact me at: ____@____.com

Sounds more like an allergic reaction. Has he been eating anything new? Using any new products, etc. Our son at around 1 had a constant rash on his face and got a horrible diaper rash after eating spaghetti. We finally figured out he was having reactions to strawberry's and tomatoes. The rash doesn't go away because it takes a few days for it to heal and then if they eat the irritant again, then the process starts over. Maybe try and start eliminating anything new his eating, change diapers and wipes. See if by process of elimination you can figure out what may be doing it. A friend from work ended up using paper towels as wipes because her daughter was allergic to all types of wipes. For the rash relief you could try using Baby Aquaphor by Eucrine. It's great for many things even rashes on face. It's sold at Babies R Us and Walmart. Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be.

Make sure you're cleaning his bottom with a warm wash cloth instead of wipes and then dry with a soft tow till it clears up. Then coat the red areas with Aquaphor. That stuff is amazing for lots of skin irritations. It will help heal it and form a barrier to keep moisture off the skin. When I did this with my son his rashes would be gone within a day or so. If this doesn't help then I would consider it being an allergy too.
