Can I Give My Toddler Tea?

We try not to give my 22 month old any juice. We want to keep it that way as long as we can, but I can tell he sometimes gets bored with water. I drink the berry flavors of Celestial Seasonings tea. It's herbal and caffeine free. Is it safe to give to my son? I would be giving it to him cold. I can't find anything online about it, but it seems like it would be OK. Do any of you put herbal tea in their cups? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks!! I'm glad to know he can have it!
Also, my son can't have dairy. He only ever drinks water. My husband and I only drink water and tea. He definitely drinks plenty of water, but when I drink the cold tea he's very curious. I only have one cup a day, so I don't see a problem in allowing him to drink it with me. I sit down in the afternoon with a cup of tea while he colors at his chair , I'm sure he'd be happy to have tea dates :)

My 3 year old has been drinking caffeine free teas for quite some time. She loves them. I asked her doctor and she said it was fine as long as you stay away from teas making health claims (like the teas for losing weight) unless you read and know the ingredients. The Celestial Seasonings should be just fine. Rooibos, Sleepytime and Candy Cane Lane are popular with my daughter.

Herbal and caffiene free? Go for it! Sounds lovely.:)

We do peppermint tea with our son, sometimes, and he loves it. Also, a little warm milk with a teaspoon of vanilla is a nice treat at our house too.

Oh yes, every day. After water, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world. My mom is Australian. I mean business when it comes to tea ;-)

My children (2 and 3) have been drinking tisanes for years now - both since a year old. Their favorite, is 1/2 peppermint , 1/2 milk and a bit of honey. It's a perfect treat after a walk in the rain.

Recently, they get very lightly steeped, milk tea occasionally. Usually earl grey. (Said and done, less caffeine and sugar than hot chocolate and the girls *love* it)

You son should be able to drink any herbal tea. My children love chamomile, etc. We have a huge herbal tea cupboard and all of them have been drinking since they were very little (even younger than your little one). We go through a couple of pots a day. They even take cold tea with them in their lunches and they look forward to hot tea when they get home from school. And there is no reason he couldn't drink it warm, either.

I'v given my daughter herbal tea in her bottle ever since she had her first soar throat as a little baby. Some health care professionals recommend mint tee for little babies that have tummy trouble. I think your good.

My daughter has had herbal tea since around a year old. Peppermint is great when they are sick and chamomile will help relax. However, chamomile can loosen the stool so be aware of that!

Warm tea is now a favorite of my four year old...with a little honey and milk.

yes, sometimes i even give mine tea with caffeine. if you want a good way to sweeten it try stevia, its not calorie ridden and teeth rotting like sugar and its not arsenic rat murdering powder like the other stuff.

My, now 16 year old, daughter is a tea addict! She loves any sort of tea and as a very small child drank all sorts of these flavored herb teas that are caffeine free. She wa lactose intolerant..then "sensitive" as child..and we didn't want to do alot of juice and water got boring..so we did flavored tea. I usually added a tich of sweet to them, as thats the way I like it...but the Celestial Seasonings and a few other brands that have been around forever..since I was a child and drank it as well...have alot of "fun" flavors.

Now, just as when I was a kid, there is always regular ice tea in a huge jug in our refrigerator (hubby drinks too..we are not a soda house)...and daughter and I have an entire shelf in one cabinet full of flavored teas..more her choices than mine. Shes funny too...she goes to an Art High School....for whatever reason, tea is popular so far with our snowy wintry months we have had. And my daughter always has a quart size baggie filled with a huge variety of flavored tea bags (and her Splenda she adds now). They have hot and cold water spouts all around her school and kids can have these drinks in covered cups at all times in classes. Her friends have made it a point to exchange teas with her. She is THE tea exchange place. They all know that if they bring her something..anything, they can try one of her exotic or just fun flavors she may be carrying!! Apparently many a student has shared that they are swiping tea bags from their mothers cabinets, just to see what they can trade up for from my kids stash! LOL. It has become a game now..silly teens!

there are fruit teas, and herbal teas.
2 different things.
Fruit teas are fine. For kids.

My kids, we did not give them juice until after 3 years old. And even at that, it was watered down with 50% water.
Even now at their ages.

My Daughter drinks tea... Chamomile or fruit teas. Or watered down Green Tea.
My daughter is 8.
We are tea drinkers in my family.
But we drink it straight. We don't add anything to it to sweeten it.

But I did not give my daughter tea, until she was 8.
Not for any particular reason.

**Keep in mind, that with Chamomile Tea... IF a person is allergic to Ragweed or anything in that family, they will get an allergic reaction.
So, per 'herbal' teas.... some can be allergic, if they have certain allergies.

I've given my son chamomile and chamomile/anise tea since around 6months to help with his acid reflux. He now drinks tea on a semi-regular basis and loves it. I put a tiny tiny pinch of sugar to give it some flavor and the 4 ounces of tea are gone in seconds! Definitely try any herbal teas, they're delicious and much healthier than juice.

I do, yes, but as you say only with the caffeine free ones. I have sometimes given them the Bigelow Pomegranate Pizazz tea since it is made with some real fruit juice (I use that to make iced tea). I also use the apple cinnamon teas once in a while. My mom has confessed that she sometimes gave us Sleepytime Tea, but I haven't tried that with my kids. If you're really not sure, check with your pediatrcian--that should be a quick call and he/she will know if there would be any issues with your child.

I do know that some teas that state you should check with your doctor before drinking if pregnant or breastfeeding were just fine in my doctor's opinion, so for anything like this you will find different opinions.

i have given my son cammomile tea so don't get me wrong - but a 22 month old isn't getting bored with water. he may want what you have, (which not giving him any will soon nip that in the bud if you are consistent), but if he only gets water and milk, then he will not know any different. my son is 4 and realizes that mom and dad drink things he can't have. whether it's iced tea, soda, or alcohol. i tell him "it's a grown up drink" and that's the end of it. that's not to say that he doesn't get juice (and even "pink" and chocolate milk) at other peoples' houses or at school - but it is in moderation and it is for "special" times. i think it's fine to give him herbal tea, but i just don't think it's necessary, unless he is sick.

My grandma gave me sleepytime tea before bed every night for years. I would test him with a small amount, then keep an eye on him. If he handles it fine, go for it. :)

My son is almost 3 and drinks mostly milk and water. We do give him watered down juice (75% water, 25% juice). We give it to him for flavor, but also for added vitamin C, especially during cold/flu season. As a special treat he gets a sprite or ginger ale when we go out to eat, although he usually asks for milk or water instead.
