Hi,I am new to the area.I would like to find a place that we can take the kids camping.We love to fish and swimming would be great.We also do canoeing.If anyone knows of any good camping sites within a hours drive I would appreciate the help.Thanks so much,D.
A great spot here in Rockford would be Rock Cut State Park. They have a swimming area, fishing and boating area also and great campsites. You can try Pearl Lake. It's only about a half hour away. It's off of 251 and by the border of Wisconsin. I've never been camping there but i have been to the beach and it's really nice. It's a man made one so it's pretty clean. I was actually just looking at there website because I was thinking about doing a family camping trip there. Rock Cuts good too but there beach is always being closed down. Good luck!
Hi D....my husband and I, w/ our kids are fellow campers! Welcome to the area. Rock Cut (as mentioned) is a nice state park and offers many activities, such as hiking trails, biking trails, many picnic areas, kayaking or canoeing and it is well kept. I will mention that our last trip there a few weeks ago was not so fun though. My husband got a ticket going into the park (it is a hill and he hadn't slowed down as much as he should have.) Also, being a state park, there is no alcohol, and they do check. One thing we observed while there that really bothered us, was as we were sitting at our camp site, we saw a ranger go into another camp site (campers were gone) and look around the whole site, not touching, but looking through all of their stuf. That bothered me a lot! And their prices have been raised. One place that is our favorite is out in Shirland (about 10 miles outside of Rockton.) It is called Sugar River Forest Preserve. There are only about 100 sites and they are huge! It is close to the river, so you could fish and the people who run it are always so pleasant and nice. It is also cheaper than Rock Cut, but it is more relaxing in there isn't as much to do. Good luck and hopefully you will find a fun place to try out!!! (There are lots of other places w/in an hour of Rockford, but my husband and I have yet to try them!! Too busy!)

We had gone to Lake LaDonna for years when our kids were younger. So geared towards kids and families. They had different themes for different weekends, bands in the bandstand on Sat nights. A manmade beach for kids of all ages. It is near White Pines State Park. My kids loved it and so did we. Very relaxing and safe. We used to bring the kids bikes and our dog. They met kids year after year some new and some that also came back year after year.
I loved sitting out at night around the fire. It was quiet time at 9 or 10 and all the kids had to go back to the camp sites. Sometimes we tent camped and sometimes we rented a cabin for the weekend (a real treat). We have 5 kids so it had 2 sets of bunk beds and one was in a playpen and a double bed for us. Check it out we always loved going there and even thought my kids are older, baby is 17, they still talk about the fun times we had at Lake LaDonna.
