Hi there! I just read a question posted about how you would pronounce Kallie which led to thinking about another similar name. My question is have you heard of or would you recognize the name Calliope, Callie for short and thoughts on it as a girls name? Thank you in advance for all of your input and opinions :)

So What Happened?

Well, I purposely left out the pronunciation so I could get a feel for how the average person would respond to the name in writing...and I got great feedback, thank you! I already named her :) - Calliope Rose - she was born on 10.10.10. I was a huge fan of Greek mythology as a child and the name is a lyric in a few songs by a band I love. No relation to the Days or Grey's characters, just learned about them! Did anyone see a children's cartoon titled Calliope back in the '80s? I could have just dreamed that, not sure. I appreciate all of the honest responses- this will help me have an idea of how to approach introducing her and what to go by as she gets into preschool etc. I made sure that even though it's a creative offbeat name of my choosing she had an out if she needs one! Callie, Callie Rose or Rose. Or the comment that made me bust out laughing in the middle of the kitchen here - McCallielynnleigh! LOL. Thanks again, I had a lot of fun reading these.

PS If anyone is still curious, the pronunciation is Kah Lie Uh Pee. (Calliope) or Calley rhymes with Alley (Callie) I don't know how to write that phonetically!

I also thought of Callie from Grey's Anatomy, since her full name is Calliope. It's not a very common name and I think a lot of people will pronounce it wrong and say Callie-ope (like, the same ending as antelope).

I think Callie is very cute, but I don't really like Calliope. I'm very traditional when it comes to names though, so I'm not always the best person to ask.

My daughter is named S.. : )

As in Calliope Torrez from Grey's Anatomy aka Callie?? I think it's awesome! It also helps that people say I look like her (she's HOT!) Sooo . . I'm all for it, it's one of a kind, but has a common nickname which is nice and easy to remember.

I saw it and thought, "alley-oop".....

You should never give your kid a name that when they go through life they are constently spelling and pronouncing it for others. It may be cute and original NOW, but not so much when she is 28 and eyeing a top position at a Fortune 500 Company.....or even applying at a Macy's.
Hard to spell and pronounce names are just that, hard to spell and pronounce.

Never heard it...Callie is super cute but I am not sure about Calliope...kinda sounds like Canteloupe :) BUT it all boils down to what you like, and no matter what some will love the name you pick and some won't. I wanted to name my 2nd baby Cadence so bad... but a friend of mine kept saying it sounded like a cult for some reason, so I ultimately picked another name and part of me still wishes I would have said, "screw what other people think, I like the name."

ETA I just read the others posts and it being pronounced "Callie-oh-pee" actually makes it kind of cute. I thought it was callie-oh-p

I have never heard of it. I would not know how to pronounce it... I personally dont like names that are so much work (teachers/coworkers etc. will NEVER say it right at first, when she walks across stage at graduation it is likely to be mis-prounouced etc.). Just my opinion...

There are lots of beautiful girls names out there... I am sure you will find the right one.

I like it, but I teach English, and whenever Calliope comes up in class, none of the students pronounce it correctly. It's a pretty name, but be prepared for your daughter to be constantly frustrated with people pronouncing her name wrong if you choose that name for her (unless she goes by a nickname).

The name Calliope is from Greek mythology. She's a muse and also the wife of one of the gods.

A calliope is also a musical instrument which is what I first pictured when I read the name. I like that it's also the name in Greek mythology.

For me, it doesn't sound like a people name. But I do like the nickname Callie.

I thought of cantaloupe as well... I do like Callie, but not sure about calliope... But it comes down to what u like!!! A name that I loved for my daughter was "Harper" but my hubby though it was a boy name. I thought it was so cute!!! We ended up naming her Madison. But, no matter what u name her, she will become that name. I can't imagine my daughter being named Harper now, she's definitely a Madison. =)

I love the name from the Greek, (keh LIE eh pee).

It's a hard one for people without a classical background to know how to pronounce, though. I heard a radio article recently in which a man (the local expert) was talking about his town's calliope (organ-like instrument), but he was pronouncing it "kallee-ope" with no stress on any syllable. It was kinda weird. As a child's name, it would probably be mispronounced often.

Hi S.,

I'm completely biased ; )
We named our 4 year old Callie and she has turned into the sweetest most beautiful child. We get compliments on her name all the time and she loves it!
Now her given name is Callie, not Calliope. But I love that name too!
Have fun!!
Cheers
B. : )

p.s. We have NEVER had anyone not know how to pronounce Callie.
It is from the Greek origin for "most beautiful".
But it also has Irish ties. Calley was my great, great, great grandmothers maiden name. That is why we chose it!

I like it, and have no problem pronouncing it or recognizing it as a girls name. However I'm a name nerd and I know many people just wouldn't get it.

Maybe if you add a 'Mck' to the front and 'Lynn' or 'Leigh' to the end, the tryndee baby namerz will love it. LOL. MckCalliopelynnleigh. I think you have a winner! :)

All joking aside, Calliope is a great name. It has a cutesy nickname that can be used for her childhood. And hey, as she grows she will know the intelligent people just from meeting them if they pronounce her name right! :)

I'm on the fence. Penelope is one of my favorite girls names, and Calliope is similar. I think it might be a bit TOO mythological for me but it's cute and I wouldn't be put off by it if I met a Calliope. I'm just trying to think of her in a professional setting. Being known as Callie and then to have college degree(s) and professional licenses that say Calliope? She might get a few surprised chuckles at the uniqueness but I wouldn't assume that's a bad thing.

I recognize the name as a musical instrument or one the muse of epic poetry. Pronunciation: K-lye-o-pee. But I think you will find a lot of people read it as K-lil-o-pee.

Like Jaycee, I think of Grey's Anatomy.

I like the name but you and your daughter will probably end up having to tell 50% of the people who meet her how to pronounce it.

reminds me of grey's anatomy. (callie's name in the show) I think it's cute though. It took me a sec reading it at first but I totally got it. I have a Daughter named Daphnee and there are people who can't pronounce it. My daughter (3) tells them "just call me Daph" (daff). It's pretty cute. She LOVES her name. I like names that are not common but not weired either. I don't think it is weird.

I have no problem recognizing Calliope as the girls name, and I think Callie, or Calli (since that's actually the shortened version of the name without adding anything) would be really cute. And I don't see any reason anyone would mispronounce Calli, or Callie, for that matter. I just don't get where people get Kaylee from Callie. It's just simple grammar. I'm sure you'd get an occasional misrponounciation, but I think more often than not, she'd be fine.

Oh yes, I have always liked this name, I remember hearing it many years ago and I have always liked it. So what if people can't spell it or pronounce it. My son's name is Derek and people can't even spell THAT correctly! lol
I would suggest giving her a more recognizable, simple middle name just incase she wants to go by that in the future. We named our other son "Cedric Ryan" b/c Cedric is kind of a nerdy name but Ryan is easier and more recognizable. Maybe Calliope Michelle or Calliope Renee or...I don't know. I only have boys! lol Good luck :-)

Some friends of ours named their daughter Calliope Jane, (she's nicknamed "Calamity Jane"). It's the Greek Muse of Poetry, muses being spirits who go about inspiring others in a variety of subjects, and also a kind of fantastic kind of musical instrument that's like a fancy organ or piano. No one has ever had trouble pronouncing it, but she herself has had a lot of trouble learning to spell it. (She's four).

I've heard of Calliope. A Greek muse and a musical instrument (think merry go round music). It's a great classical name.
I still think people will pronounce Callie as KAY-lee.
You could try Kali - an Asian Indian goddess (though some will still say KAY-lee).
Collie will not be pronounced any other way, but most people would consider naming their daughter for a dog to be insulting.
