Saw one on the back of last year's calendar from Betty Crocker. It shows how to bake it and assemble and decorate. Here is the link to Betty Crocker and there's also a video and a template.

If you do an on-line search for Butterfly Cakes, you can find tons of photos with instructions on how they were made. My favorite site is http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/butterfly-cakes.htm.... I made my first birthday cake (a lady bug cake) last year for my daughter's 1st birthday and I used this site to do it. Now I'm working on her flower themed 2nd birthday cake, also using this site. Good luck!

I know Wilton makes one but not sure where exactly you would find it. I googled and got this, $12.95 is pretty good. It looks like Amazon also has one. A ton of findings comes us if you just google "Butterfly cake pan"

i made one for my daughter's 2nd birthday this past september. i made 2- 8 inch cakes and stacked them. then i cut them down the middle and laid the round sides next to each other (the cut, flat sides are then facing out). then i cut a little indent about 2/3 of the way down on the flat side. i laid a twizzler down the middle for a 'body', frosted it with purple frosting and decorated with candies to outline the wings.
here's the address to my blog that has a picture of it. (about 1/2 way down the page)

Michaels craft store makes a butterfly shaped cake pan. It is made by Wilton.

My girlfriend makes birthday cakes and she does an awesome job. She does wedding , and special occasion cakes too. I have given her several ideas on cakes and she always surprises us with her work. The best part is she is SOOO reasonably priced. Please let me know if you are interested and I can send you some pictures. She has a basic website up with some pictures too. Go to:
www.mimissweettreats.com
Let me know if you want more info. Seriously she is awesome and the cakes taste beautiful She is doing my two year old Madagascar cake tis weekend. She did an amazing Wizard of Oz cake for me.

My suggestion is to use cupcakes. make as many as you'll need and arrange them in the shape of a butterfly. Then frost the whole thing. it'd be very easy. Hope this helps!

Not sure where you are located, but we got a butterfly cake for our two year old's party in October at Lezza Bakery. They are in Bellwood at st. Charles and Mannheim roads. The have TONS of books and will combine ideas from more than one cake if you would like, or make your vision of the perfect cake for you. The best cake EVER! And super friendly family that works there.

the "cut up cake book" has instructions on how to make one. It's pretty easy - bake a 9x13 cake. Cut it like this (even though this picture looks like the cake should be oriented with the long side up/down, you'll want to orient with the long-side going across the page):
___________
|..|\..../|
|..|.\../.|
|..|..\/..|
|..|../\..| 9"
|..|./..\.|
|..|/....\|
-----------
13"

(pardon the dots in the middle - mamasource kept trying to eliminate my spaces) Then you can use the long rectangle piece as the body and the 4 triangles as the wings. Frost and decorate.

I made a birthday cake for my daughter a few years ago that turned out beautifully, if your feeling creative. If you take a round cake and cut a strip out the center (for the butterfly body), then cut off the two sides and flip flop the them (so the sides you cut have the flat sides now pointed outwards and the circular sides are touching the strip you cut for the base), it makes a great foundation. From there a little trimming and decorating. We used Twizzlers for the antennae. Good lunck!

For "special" occasions and 1st birthdays qualify we head to Deerfields Bakery. There are two locations: Schaumburg and Buffalo Grove. If you have an adult crowd, these cakes are a little pricey, but EXTREMELY delicious and beautiful. I remember for my daughter's 1st birthday we purchased a "watermelon" cake and they added butterflies around the edges. We went with the buttercream frosting and yummy strawberry filling. For the little guests, I would suggest cupcakes that you can decorate to look like flowers or find some cute butterfly picks maybe??
Good luck and have lots of fun at the party!

We did the same for our daughter when she turned one.
Here is a simple recipe that I used...

1 box cake mix
make according to directions using 2 round pans
16 oz cool whip
1 package of mini oreos
1 cup fruity pebbles
food coloring

Bake the cake according to the directions using 2 round cake pans. Cool completely.
While cakes are cooling, color cool whip with your choice of food coloring.
Cut cakes in half and place on cookie sheet with round sides facing in to make wings. It will make a 2 layer cake.
Layer and frost cakes. Sprinkle with fruity pebbles.
Place oreos randomly on butterfly.
Stack oreos in between butterfly wings...place a dollop of cool whip in between oreos so they stay put.
Refrigerate until ready or cool whip will melt.
You could use regular white frosting instead of cool whip.

If you have any questions let me know. I can search for the actual recipe...I kind of went by memory.

I have a very vivid memory of a beautiful butterfly cake my mother made for my 5th birthday! Its very easy to make- simply bake a round cake, cut it in half, turn the rounded sides of the cake to meet each other in the middle ( the straight cut edges will now be on the outside of your "butterfly wings" ), frost the cake in your child's favorite color, and decorate the "butterfly wing veins" with squeeze out of a tube contrast color frosting. Enjoy making your birthday creation!

My mom got me a kids cake book with all sorts of ideas. I made a butterfly cake one year. The body was made of HoHos, Twizzlers for the antannae and it looked fantastic. I am happy to send along a pic or more info if you like.

BTW - I can follow instructions, but am NOT crafy/a good cook. So I was very pleased with how easy it was.

Dominick's makes a 'cake' where it's actually a bunch of cupcakes fit together and then frosted like seasonal items and I know I've seen a butterfly on display in spring & summer. Check with your local grocery store or even Sam's Club or Costco.
