I am a wahm.... I am thinking about going back to school but I still haven't mastered time management for what I'm currently doing. I think it would be good to go back as then I would finish what I started and I really think I need to get out a bit as I'm always at home. I have thought about getting up earlier, but I really hate getting up when it's still pitch black out. So, I was curious what other moms that are working do to help save time.... Thanks!!

All I have time to add is this: EVERYTHING takes longer than people think it should or predict that it will. If you're already having trouble staying on top of what you're doing now, then don't expect extra time to magically appear for attending school and doing homework.

Attending just one three hour community college course will take driving time, parking time, walking to and from the building time, time after class to ask questions sometimes, time to go buy supplies sometimes, usually three hours a week of homework (but that's an AVERAGE--some weeks it may be ten hours, other weeks one hour), time to deal with computer and class website dysfunctions sometimes, etc. That's probably more like 8-9 hours on average per week, if you live about 20 minutes away from the college.

I'm not one to discourage anyone from increasing her education, but I do know from the experience of going to grad school as a working mother that it took a lot more time than I had expected (and I'm a realist), and about 10x more time than other people thought it did.

Hi J.,

Make a decision to learn and be better at time management.
To do lists helps, keeping a journal can be helpful as well, becoming task oriented, self motivated, having a consistent daily routine is a good idea.

Being organized and task oriented helps me with managing time better. I make time for myself, my family, my business, volunteering /helping others and fun each week.

PS: It take 21 days to form a new habit, so if you want to get up early each day, set an alarm, get up and go about your day productively.

I'm a mom of twins and a 4 year old. I volunteer at my church and I do professional organizing and yes, my house is clean. I know about time management...I have to in order to stay sane. It's all about routine and knowing what my schedule can handle. I have to say no a lot in order to protect my time. I have a time map that you can fill out with all the things you do weekly and it will give you a visual of where your time is spent. Call me with your email so I can sent it to you. You may find that you have more time than you think. ###-###-####
