I use Caladryl Clear (white bottle with blue lettering) for poision ivy and bug bites. It stops the itching better than anything I've tries. I also take Benadryl tablets. The two together have kept me off steroids. Good Luck!

Believe it or not the thing that I found that works best for the itching is to get in the shower and put the water on as hot as you can stand it and put it on the bug bites. It really does work. I first tried it on chiggers and it works on the other bites also. Good luck.

start taking a b complex vitamin every day - after a few months this will drastically diminish how tasty you are to the bugs. And i usually mix hydrocortisone and benedryl cream and is your super miserable maybe even a little neosporen cream with the pain reliever in it.

ok here's what I say:
Advil will help the swelling also try preperation H cream for swelling.
Take a long bath in aveeno oatmeal(any collidal oatmeal product).
next apply benadryl cream or aveeno anti itch cream(i love this one).
If that doesnt work, then get a numbing cream and apply to area-like lanacaine or oragel.
If that doesnt work you are going to have to see your doctor and get an allergy pill.
Also I love the new OFF bug lantern...it works better than anything weve used in a long time. Im sure its probally toxic but mosquitoes will drive you to do extreme things!
good luck and dont scratch just press press press!

We bought pure Amonia after reading the labels on most bug bite remedy the #1 ingredient was amonia and tee tree oil. So i made a mixture of my own and put it in a spray bottle. The only draw back is if you have an open bite or open scratch the amonia burns so be careful when applying it. Hope it helps!

I get bitten badly also! I haven't figured out how to avoid them (other than spray, long pants, long sleeves - ugh). However, Tea Tree Oil has helped tremendously with the itching and swelling and an over-the-counter antihistimine pill helps TREMENDOUSLY! I use benadryl at night and a cold medicine with a non-drowsy antihistimine in it during the day. Try the Avon Skin So Soft lotion to avoid the bites??

This may sound crazy but after my daughter had chigger bites last Spring I used Vagisil cream on the bites. I found this information online and it contains a higher amount of benzocaine than products sold specifically for bug bites. I just bought the CVS brand and she quit scratching after the first application.

If it is mosquitos, then start eating garlic which repells them from coming to you. Mosquitos are attracted to people who have a good metabolism and garlic sends off a scent that is not liked by them.
As far as itching and swelling, if you can find a product that is sold by Melalucca called melagel, this works great & it also takes the sting pain from a wasp almost immediately. Rubbing alcohol keeps you from infection when over scratching and brings the swelling down some. Ice if your out & about calms it until you can get the needed items above.

Try diluting Listerine 1/2 and 1/2 with water and spraying it on before going outside - it will prevent future bites!

Go to the health food store (Whole Foods or Sprouts)and buy Apis homeopathic pellets - take 5, and if the itch persists take 5 more - under the tongue. That should stop the itch and swelling. I also use a drop of pure Lavender Essential Oil on the bite if I don't have the Apis handy. It works almost instantly.

Both these remedies are safe, do not interact with any drugs or meds, and are fine for kids as well.

I took a group to Curacao and we did Yoga at sunrise every morning, and got eaten alive. I brought 6 Apis bottles (blue tubes, actually) and we went through them all! It works!

Try some benadryl cream or hydrocortizone for the itch, and eat raw garlic, (in the form of hummus tastes best,) or take garlic pills, the bugs will stop biting. Watch your breath, though!! It really works!!

T.,

My mom and my sisters do this all the time for the kids. They live in Houston so there are LOTS of mosquitos. If you are outside for any extended period of time, fasten a dryer sheet (the kind with fabric softener) to your clothes. This masks human scents and they don't come near you. What I find works great for ANY itch is Gold Bond Cream. It has menthol in it so it relieves itching. My mother-in-law also uses bag balm that you would normally use on skin rashes and cow udders! You can find that in the skin care section in a green square tin. Hope that helps!

Chigger-Ex is the best thing we have found for bug bites. I also have heard that if you put a dryer sheet in your pocket it will keep the mosquitos away - I've never tried it, but could be worth a try! good luck

I don't know what will stop them from biting because, at least for me, none of those creams or sprays work. But, if you put vinegar or apple vinegar on the bites, the swelling will go down imediately and it will take away a bit of the itch. I live in the tropics in Mexico and always have bites. My sister-in-law is a doctor and told me to put vinegar on my daughter. It really works.

You might also try sitting in a warm bath using Aveeno Oatmeal bath additive. My family uses it for anything itchy and it seems to work pretty good.

Try tea tree oil. Its great for all kinds of bug bites and it kills athletes foot too! Heres what wiki says about it

Tea tree oil is an extraction from the Melaleuca tree.

Tea tree oil or melaleuca oil is a clear to very pale golden color essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odour. It is taken from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia which is native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil has beneficial medical properties (including antiseptic and antifungal action), and is also believed to have beneficial cosmetic properties.

Hi T.,
There is a product from Shaklee, called Basic H. It has worked for the last 14 years to protect me and my family from bug bites. It is a household product, but has many other uses. It is ph balanced and contains no toxins, so it is safe to put on the skin. I will be happy to send you a free sample if you contact me.

It might not be bugs, it might be hives (allegic reaction to something). Also if it is mainly on your legs, it could be fleas. My parents live in a wooded neighborhood, near a creek, and their neighborhood is prone to fleas unless the yard is sprayed. I would go see a doctor. Good Luck!

tape a penney right on the head of the bite! Just leave it there for a couple of hours. Doesn't really take the swelling down but does take the itch away. Or there is windex...but doesn't work as well. Or I've heard a banana peel...but it's messy. To avoid getting bitten try walking around with a dryer towel in your pocket kind of hanging out. Hope you find relief!

When you come in from outside try rubbing your skin with medicinal alchohol (I think I spelled that right). It should relieve the itch.

Try using Dermoplast. It comes in a spray can and is used for many different reasons. It usually has a blue or a red top. A friend of mine got chigger bites and she tried everything including clear finger nail polish. I brought some of this to her and she said that it worked better than anything else she had tried. I put this on my son when he gets mosquito bites and it seems to work fast and longer than anything else. Good luck I know that can be miserable.

Also I have tried the dryer sheets and they did not work with us.

Hi T.,
My children also have issues like yours with bug bites, being eaten alive, huge welts, etc.. I found and work at home with a Wellness company called Melaleuca that uses natural ingredients. I now use a natural bug spray that is safe (no chemicals or aerosal propellants) but is also effective. They rarely get a bite and if they do, it is my fault for not spraying them. But I also put an ointment on the bites and after a few minutes they do not itch. It is amazing! I tried it on myself and couldn't believe how great it works. I can tell you more about it if you want. You can either email me at ____@____.com or call me at ###-###-####. Good Luck :)

avon has a product "skin so soft" that works well for prevention.
also, you can take a sheet of "bounce" the fabric softner sheets, slip one under the edge of each sleeve or around your ankles. someone had told me about this years ago because i have bad reactions to bites and have been to the hospital several times...., it truly works
for the bite and the swelling
good old fashioned calamine lotion works fabulously
you can get the clear kind.

If you have a bathtub, try soaking in oatmeal. Aveeno makes a product that is oatmeal based and I've heard you can just use regular oatmeal. This will take the itching and the swelling out. If you don't have a bathtub (just a shower stall) I think Aveeno makes a bar of oatmeal soap you could try. Good luck and God Bless!

Advil for the swelling actually works pretty well. I find that if I can control the swelling, the itching isn't nearly as bad. I have also heard of using Preparation H, although I have never tried it. There are a lot of prescription creams out there that could help, so if the home remedies don't work, I am sure that your doctor can prescribe something.

I use clear nail polish which kills the germs in there and stops the itch, I've also used clear tape. You might want to try using B1 vitamins, it sends out an order (ordorless to us) that bugs don't like. It works.

I had the same problem last year. my 2year old son is alergic to mosquitos so I tried everything and I found something that worked!! Are you ready?? Dryer sheets!! Bounce, downy, or anyother brand. You just rub it on your skin like a washcloth and the mosquitos aren't attracted. Also, putting rubbing alcohol on bites dries them out and keeps them from itching. My daughter stepped into an ant pile and I rubbed it on and it kept her from scratching it. You will have to do it a couple of times thru the day, but it works. I hope this helps.
