Budget Travel Destinations for Christmas

Hello Mamas~
My Mother-in-law has offered to take her family on a vacation this Christmas instead of struggling to figure out what gifts to buy everyone. My concern is that it will be much too expensive for her...I'm trying to help her pick a destination that is somewhat do-able financially. There will be 9 of us (5 adults and 4 kids aged 4-11). Disneyworld while a very attractive idea is just too expensive.
Does anyone have any ideas for an affordable destination? Thanks so much-my MIL will thank you too!

Costa Rica is a beautiful and very inexpensive destination. There is lots to do in terma of outdoor recreation like horseback riding, canopy tours of the rainforest, volcano tours, etc. There are natural hot springs at the base of the volcano that are sooo much fun! You can also check my website for some Dream Trip ideas to see if they might fit with your travel dates.

Hey T.! One of my favorite places to go during Christmas is Gatlinburg, TN! It's so pretty with the Christmas lights, and usually you will see some snow while you are there!! There are cabins available to rent up in the mountains. I love it!! Hope this helps!

I'm thinking a house would be a cheaper and better choice for you all.... wherever you go. Try www.vrbo.com to look for a house to rent by state and then by city.

You could find a place in the hills in Arkansas or anywhere.

I would second renting a house in Gatlinburg, TN. Mexico might be workable as well depending on the budget.

Have fun,

Hi T.,

Are all 9 people in the family currently in the same city? Will they begin their travel from the same place? You should look into Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is beautiful and would be a nice getaway during the cold Christmas season.

Good luck!

Hi T.,
I don't know if you saw the movie The Holiday or not but it is an advertisement for a service people use. It is home swapping. I can't remember the sites, but if you google, you will find it. You may not have a home to swap, but they have other offers on the site for places like large homes all over the world. It can be alot cheaper. I took my family to Fredericksburg, TX for Christmas and basically we paid for a home that had games and some food. It was really nice and in town with the lights. We had a gaming new years with my brother's family and my mother and I am glad we did it. It's not where you are, but who you are with, they say. Lights there too. If I had my choice I would rent a home in Estes, Colorado and do just what we did. Grocery shopping , a few out to eats and alot of talking a games. Best time ever, hands down, and I have been to Orlando:)

I was thinking Branson or Gatlinburg (close by Dollywood)are both very beautiful during the holidays. Both have cabins all the way to luxury suites to rent depending on the budget. Have a fun family vacation!

There are alot of family friendly, cheap places in Corpus Christi or Galveston. All you'd have to pay is for the hotle rooms and a few attractions but we found it very affordable. You can see the oceans, play on the beaches, collect sea shells, there are lots of other attractions in the area too. Take a ferry ride to one of the islands...It was great! Good luck!
