Bruises on Shins

Am I the only one with a kid that has constant bruises on her shins? She is a climber and loves the park, and her toddler gym class. The problem is she climbs kinda funny. If it's a little too tall then she will double over it, face first, and try to pull her self up by arm strength. If that doesn't workTHEN she will try and use her legs. But usually she can get up without leg strenght and she ends ups banging her shins. So poor kid ends up with dime size bruises, I swear it looks like we made her stand there while we threw rocks at her. She rarely has bruises anywhere else, just the shins. She can't be the only one?

Shari, ummm no. She is fine when she wants to climb with her legs she does. She just for the most part chooses not to. Honestly I think she just like to hang from things.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

LOL Well, now I feel a lot better. We took her to a new park and she has a new GIGANTIC bruise on the inside of her knee. Sigh, well at least she had fun

I'm such a tomboy that I still have bruises all over my shins and I'm 28, lol. My girls are 3 and 10 and their legs are always covered in little bruises. No worries.

Okay this made me laugh - because it is so true!

Yes, our older child looked like we continually whacked him with sticks across the shins when he 2 and 3.

I think it is pretty normal and I wouldn't worry about other people thinking bad things. Child abusers tend to put the bruises and marks where they won't be seen, and in the summer months you'll see shins all the time.

Totally normal! She's having fun. She's learning and discovery, and she's going to have some bumps and bruises along the way. My friend's brother is a family doctor, and he said those are the types of bruises you want to see in little ones. I usually means they are outside playing and not inside all day watching tv.

Sounds like she could be using the wrong groups of muscles to help compensate. I would get her to an OT or PT to check this out. She could be weak somewhere and you might not know it.

Both my kids (7 year old & 4 year old) have bruised legs. It's just a part of being a kid. :)

Nope. My daughter is starting to ride her tricycle and she doesn't use the pedals. So inturn the pedals are hitting her legs. She is full of bruises. That also happens when we go to McDonalds and she is in the play area. She comes home with bruises all over her legs. So to answer your questions she is NOT the only one!

Not even close. All three of my girls have gone (or are still going) through the bruised shin phase. No worries. They grow out of it and go straight into the skinned knee phase. All part of growing up. Look at it this way, your daughter's bruises denotes an active child who gets to play and explore. She is a lucky girl and you are a great Mom!
