We have found several brown widow spiders around the outside of our house. We had pest control spray the outside. I am still seeing them and it has been 5 days. They are alive and well and all over the kids toys. I just washed the webs off (was told to do this 4 days after the spray to see if the webs come around again) and found huge ones under the kids water table, a wooden stool and inside the toy kitchen shelves. They were smooshed immediately. Scary!!!! Does anyone know how to keep the spiders away? Any secrets out there? My three year old loves bugs but knows not to touch the spiders and especially the "zebra (brown widows) and black ones" but my 1 year old still doesn't get it. Do I need to get rid of the outside toys?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THey are definitely brown widows. I took a picture and showed pest control. I have killed at least 12 that were in the kids toys. The hide in the leg holes of the water table so its hard to get them. They've gotten less scary to me the more I kill. I hate the brown widows, but at least they arent in the house. Pest control is going to spray again... but it sounds like that isn't going to help much! I will keep the kids toys outside and check them everyday. A friend of mine goes spider hunting for black widows in her backyard every night. I may try that and add it to my bug killing resume! Thanks everyone!

hi S. I had the same problem when we lived in Murphy Cayon Naval housing, my kids had a plastic football toybox and some other out door toys on our patio, and black widows were on everything, widows don't die easly, what I did put boiling water on everything then I moved everything inside. With winter on the horizon they will be going away soon but they will be back, Ity's better to be safe than sorry, move the toys inside. J.

Are these brown recluses, widows are black widows? Apparantly, black widows are pretty immune to sprays unless they are directly hit, so keep squashing them. Someone just posted about hedge apples keeping spiders away. I think you can buy brown recluse killer at the store.

we have problems w/ black widows. they like dark places. they like to hide. i'd go out and turn what you can over, and then when it is time to play-turn it over again. and smoosh.

and, she does mean brown widows. They are a big problem in So Cal.

oh no! I've heard that the brown widows are even more poisonous than the black widows. I would put away all the outside toys and call the company back over to take care of them once and for all. Good luck!

Call that Pest control company, and tell them the spiders are STILL around.

You may have to use powder pesticides, outside. It 'sticks' to the insect. Unlike sprays.

Brown widows are on the rise. According to our exterminator they have increased in numbers and are actually more prevalent in So Cal than Black Widows. We are also on the look out for them. Good luck.

For those not familiar with Brown Widows, the red hourglass that is on the abdomen of a Black Widow is also present in the Brown Widow.
