Hi. My husband and I are about to celebrate our 9th Anniversary. I want to go see a Broadway Show but I can't decide what to see.....I am originally from NY but moved to TX 1 year ago. We are going "home" for a visit and will be seeing a play in NYC then. Does anyone have any suggestions?I love Musicals...and I've heard good things about Newsies. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I loved the movie Newsies and would love to see it!!

My favorites (I have no idea what's playing on Broadway now)
Rent
Les Mis
Hairspray
Mamma Mia
Avenue Q

I also really want to see Book of Mormon. That one and Avenue Q are definitely not for those who take offense easily. The jokes are off-color and inappropriate in a very funny way.

I might be the only person in the world to say this (seriously, because everyone I know disagrees with me), but I hated Wicked. I wanted to leave at intermission.

I see just about everything on Broadway. Newsies was just ok. So many better shows out there. Are you getting tickets in advance? If yes, join Playbill.com or Broadway.com for possible discount tickets. Lion King is awesome as is Wicked. Kinky Boots is great. Of course the Book of Mormon. That would be my first choice. Tickets are expensive. I am going in the fall. Got tix almost a year in advance. Now I think if you are willing to sit on the sides or mezzanine you could get tickets. Actually sometimes
Mezz is better. Pippin was also great. If you want a great place for dinner, Victors Cafe is my favorite. It is Cuban, but not off the wall weird food. Homemade fresh Sangria. Yummy. Have fun.

We've seen or have tickets to see just about everything currently on Broadway. There are so many great options right now!!!!

So, rather than telling you what I love, I think your best bet is to listen to some of the soundtracks, research some of the stories, and see what calls to you!

You can listen to sirius-Broadway channel, or any of the other on-line sources to become familiar with the songs. After researching some of the musicals, maybe narrow your list to five and get to know some of the songs either through I-tunes or checking out the CDs from your library.

Seriously, Broadway is so magical, and every production has its merits---just depends on what you and your husband want---- serious or silly; fun/feel-good; gorgeous costumes; classic broadway, etc.

Currently some of the main musicals on Broadway are: Book of Mormon; Mowtown: the Musical; Kinky Boots; Annie; Chicago; Mamma Mia; Wicked; Matilda; Newsies; Phantom; Once; Pippin; Spiderman; Jersey Boys and a few "Disney" ones.

There are some others, but these are the most popular, recently nominated and Tony award-winning musicals.

I will add one thing about Pippin---it's an older musical, a great story with wonderful music and is often overshadowed by the powerful, more commonly known musicals.

Have fun looking into your options and planning your trip! Have a wonderful time!

Loved:
Wicked, Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera, American Idiot, Legally Blonde, Billy Elliott, Lion King
Did not care for:
Miss Saigon, Rent
I think Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys would both be good shows for a couple to see together, but I haven't seen them so I can't recommend one way or another.
I would LOVE to see the Book of Mormon, that's supposed to be hysterical (and yes, it's a musical.) See if you can get tickets for that!

Mama Mia is a real feel good show. Love it and have seen it several times...the first time on my 10th anniversary.

Les Mis is probably my all time favorite along with Miss Saigon but miss Saigon is not paying.

Wicked is great. I liked the Lion King but not as much as the other shows.

What ever you decide to see, I recommend you listen and know the music before the show. I seem to enjoy the shows much more when I know all the tunes😊.

Have fun and happy anniversary.

What have you seen?

Personally I want to see Kinky Boots. I've seen the movie (based on a true story) and it is hilarious. Didn't even know it was turned into a musical til I saw it on the Tony's

We saw Mary Poppins on Broadway and also the lion king and wicked. For me wicked was my least favorite. After all the hype I was super excited to go but pretty underwhelmed. Another suggestion is the cirque did solei. We saw that at Rockefeller cntr last July. There were 6 of us. 5 have it race reviews. I liked what I saw but am embarrassed to say that after walking all over New York in the heat all day I feel asleep a quarter of the way through. The comfy chairs and air conditioning lulled me right to sleep

Regardless of what you think of South Park, people are raving over The Book of Mormon, and it's a musical. I loved Wicked. Kinky Boots just won a Tony award. Everyone says the Lion King is spectacular, though I haven't seen it.
