Breastfeeding, Pumping, and Reglan

I have posted previously about pumping at work and not getting a whole lot in terms of ounces. I have pretty much exhausted everything (power pumping, fenugreek, advice from Lactation consultants, etc.) My daughter is 9 months old and I cannot pump enough at work for her to have only breastmilk when I am at work and she is in day care. She is eating solids too, but still we must supplement with formula which is not my ideal. My lactation consultant has now suggested talking to my doctor about Reglan. Has anyone used this? What was your experience like? Side effects? I have no history of depression, which is one side effect that I do know of. How much did your milk supply increase? I am only thinking of using it for a month or month and a half. I work in a school and we will be getting out for the summer and I will not need to pump then. Any information will be helpful.

What can I do next?

I used this and I really didn't see a difference. I was the exact same way, but i just supplemented with formula. I would just supplement until the end of school and then you'll be back on only breastfeeding for the summer.

Hi, good for you for being so committed! I used reglan about a month after my twins were born because I was having a hard time keeping up with demand. It really did increase my milk supply dramatically, but I had such bad depression that I had to quit taking it. This was only a month after they were born, so I am sure my hormones were still out of wack. I would try it, and see what happens. However, definetly stop taking it right away if you start feeling depressed.

I've never used it, but I just wanted to ask, have you checked your pump? Sometimes they lose suction with lots of use.

Hey J.,
My name is D. and I am mommie to a 3 month old miracle named Jaydn! He was born with a TE Fistula and had to have surgery his second day in the world. He was put on Reglan as well when we left the hospital and I have to be honest; it took me a month and a half to figure it out but he had numerous side effects to it; he was extremely irritable (he would shake arms all over, scream, his eyes would be bugged), restless(didn't sleep well at all), cried ALOT, and so on....I caution you GREATLY on using this medicine on a baby; my surgeon took him off it as soon as I made the call and told him what was happening. He DID say that very few babies have side effects from it BUT it was a very rough 1 and a 1/2 months while he was on it. Good luck with it...Let me know how it works for you if you decide to go with it!

Reglan is only a 4 or 5 week drug anyway. You gradually take more of it each day until you reach the peak, then you gradually take less, and that's it. I noticed 1-2 extra ounces when I was on it at its peak. But there is really nothing like actually nursing you baby. If you're losing your supply, you have to start pumping every 2 hours, as well as during the night if you LO is asleep. I had a really hard time doing this at school, and that's why I wasn't very successful at increasing my supply even with reglan. It's not a miracle drug. The only sure way to keep your supply is to stay at home with your baby and nurse. I eventually quit my job to be a stay-at-home mom and I"m so glad I did.

I have lupus and due to meds, I stopped breastfeeding 2 x's; and 100% successfully relactated using Reglan, Fenugreek and boosting my milk intake signaficantly. I also pumped every hour + put my son to my breast every hour (basically, SOMETHING was attached to my breast every 30 min) and during the night, I did wake myself every 3 hours to do the pumping. It worked, I bought a double pump bra - and sat with my son in my arms alot while pumping, it helped me relax and allowed the pumping to be more effective. I also recommend renting a hospital grade pump to up your supply and maximize the pumping; mine looked like a mini-air compressor, and was extremely effective. Good luck! Keep your head up!!!

I dont mean to be harsh, but give it up...its great while it last...but if your resorting to take drugs to continue, doesnt that defeat the all natural, harmless idea of breastfeeding? You might have done all you can do, just be thankful that you were able to do it for 9 months...you have helped yourself more than like 75% of moms.

I am starting the regalin tomorrow,,how did the pills work for you? and i wanted to tell you that my body just never responded to a pump...its like my body knew it was a machine and would not waste any milk on a machine. you doing ok now that you are home? i hope you are,,i know the feelings that come with wanting to nurse your baby well...i struggled with my first baby,,and i feel for anyone struggling with it. my son and i are doing well,,he just turned 6 weeks old and is 15 lbs already. he was 10 at birth, so he had a good start, but is still gaining well. i just seem to be short on milk by 9pm,,he is uncomfortable and squirrmey at my breast by 9 every night,,so i figure it because he is not getting milk from me. let me know how you are doing. thinking of ya and wishing you well.

I haven't even read all the responses yet, but I had to quickly say, NO! DO NOT GIVE UP! How terrile to suggest you just give up when it gets tough! Yes, you've already given it more than most moms would, but that just shows me how determined you are to give your baby the best.
Pumping is difficult and tiring. Do what you can, and just be sure to breastfeed when you are home with her. Reglan is helpful, yes. At least in the cases I've seen. I've had a couple of moms on Reglan who said it worked wonderfully. Try it, see how it works for you. At this point, it certainly can't hurt.
If you are unable to pump enough to give her breast milk only, don't feel guilty. at least you are giving her all you've got! Be sure she's getting it straight from you when you are together.
You're doing great, only a short time to go before you will no longer need to worry about it, so keep up the good work. It's worth the effort. Your daughter will be better off for it!
