I was wondering if anyone knows about drinking Slimfast while breastfeeding. I only drink it once a day. I was just worried about the ingredients and stuff. I want to make sure nothing in it harms my son. Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I first want to thank all of you for responding, due to all the different views I went ahead and called our pediatrician, the OB AND the lactation specialists to get down to what I needed to know. I do have to say that we get on here and ask quetions as moms who are have concerns. I asked this question because I didn't know. I had a very rude response from Debbie T, "If you're comfortable knowing you're giving your baby the chemicals in that and robbing him of the vital nutrients he needs for brain and eye developement on the auspices of "losing weight right now" then I guess exercise is out of the question." I asked because I once in a while have to run out the door to work and grab that instead of not eating at all. I am not, not eating. I am walking 2-3 times a week as well as eating healthy. I just wanted to make sure the occasional drink didn't hurt him. They said as long as I get the calories a day I need there is NOTHING wrong with having Slimfast. There is NOTHING in there that can harm my son at all. Slimfast has all the protein, nutrients, carbs and everything that we get out of foods. I just have to make sure that I am getting the calories I need a day. Again, I thank all of you who really cared and reponded to try and clear this up. Let's keep on helping each other and keep the rudes ones who don't care out of here. God bless.

I have to agree. Slimfast is a lot of sugar. You'd be better off with a powder shake that you mix in the blender.

It should say on the can or box etc.. if it's bad for breastfeeding Moms. I know when I couldn't keep anything down why pregnant, the Dr. told me to drink that. Why breastfeeding, I would def ask your Dr (OB/Peditrician etc) if you have concerns about anything, they could give you the best answers, and usually you can just call and talk to a nurse etc... Good Luck

If you're drinking the Slimfast as a meal replacement to diet, just remember that breastfeeding burns lots of calories! You really need to be eating AT LEAST enough calories to MAINTAIN your weight, that way your baby will be getting enough calories and nutrients. If you're eating reasonably healthy and even getting a little exercise (light to brisk walking is enough) while you're breastfeeding you WILL lose the weight! I gained 60 pounds during my last pregnancy, and after 7 months I had lost almost 40. That was from nursing, eating decent (i say decent because i still ate mcdonalds from time to time and desserts, but tried to stick to whole grains, skim milk, making sure i ate some fruits and veggies regularly, etc) and moderate exercise (usually walking 2-3 times a week). Honestly, as far as chemicals go and the things going into your body...it's probably not as bad as most of the processed and fried foods we usually eat, not to mention the pesticides and stuff that's on a lot of stuff! So, the main concern would be whether or not you're getting what you need to feed your baby! It would be definitely good if you had it as a snack, rather than a meal, and definitely not more than one a day. Good luck!

Nope you are fine. That is just more nutrients you are giving your child that your child probably needs. I drink muscle milk since i don't eat everything i should be eating. But my child is an healthy 8 month old baby. She is still gettin all the milk that she needs. So there is another drink you can drink and still get all your nutrients and not worry about eating all the time. But if you are cutting out some meals you can dry up.

I dont' think I'd be that worried about dieting while breastfeeding. I've breastfed all four of my kids and lost the weight after I quit nursing. You should just want to make sure that the baby is healthy and getting all the nutrition they need.

Also, dieting means cutting caloric intake from what's needed in order to lose weight and nursing you need more than the average caloric intake for a woman. So I would really advise just holding off a while. You just had a baby so you aren't going to be completely back yet. But it will come and nursing helps keep weight off for years after having children while mothers who bottle feed tend to gain back their pregnancy weight over years.

But if in the end you want to diet, I'd consult your doctor on what's best for you and the baby.

This may seem contrary to logic, but I actually recommend Slimfast to my clients who are too busy to eat. On the one hand, there is some sugar--but your son will get that from your milk anyway. On the other hand, the complete profile of nutrients is better than what we'd usually get from a meal.

While a "whole foods" variety of meal replacement might have less sugar, Slimfast is more widely available. The difference between it and a "whole foods" variety--nutritionally speaking--is miniscule.

Good luck!

I could only find the ingredient list on Optima drinks. They contain artificial sweetners which are link with brain cancer and nervous system disorders. I would switch to a whole foods shake instead.

You might try the Arbonne figure eight shake mixes. They are yummy made in the blender with ice, skim milk, and a banana. They come in orange/vanilla/and chocolate. My favorite is the orange and vanilla mixed together. I used to sell arbonne, but now just buy it for personal use. You can go to the website and order right off of it.
