Breastfeeding and Periods - Waterbury,CT

Hi Moms - I am nursing my 9 month old baby. My period returned last month when he went on a nursing strike while cutting teeth. It was a regular period. 5 days, just what I remember a period to be. :) (I hadnt had one since May 2009)

Well, it hasnt come back since. I was expecting it last week. So now I'm 9 days late. I've taken 2 pregnancies test, both of them are negative. My husband and I are careful, but we arent that careful. So pregnancy is always a possibility.

When I nursed my daughter years ago, when my period returned, it was regular, and came every month.

But now I am wondering if breastfeeding is suppressing it b/c my son started nursing more steadily now that his teeth came in. Has anybody else experienced this?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Absolutely, your period will be wacky for awhile. Mine came back when my son was 5 months old, just like a regular period, and the next month was very very light and almost nonexistent. Then it didn't come at all the next month and I freaked and thought I might be pregnant, but the test was negative. My son is a year old now, and I'm still breastfeeding, but since he's been on solid foods more and more and nursing less, my periods are getting increasingly regular. But for awhile there they were totally unpredictable, sometimes coming right on time and sometimes not at all, sometimes regular length and regular flow, sometimes longer and heavier, sometimes shorter and lighter. I'm hoping it's finally regulating. Time will tell. I suppose that the frequency of nursing must have some effect on menstruation, but everyone is different. If you're concerned, just put a call in to your doc to ease your mind. Meanwhile, if you're not in the market for another baby you should probably be more careful. There are some birth control options that you can use while BFing too, besides just condoms, that you may want to look into. Your doctor is the best source for all that info. Good luck!

we're all different, but all I know is periods seem to be out of wack for a long time after baby is born. My son's 2.5 yers old now and my period STILL isn't regular. (it was like clockwork before conceiving). So don't fret if you're just a few days late. Take tests if you need to and just try to not stress. (a month or two ago my cycle was 44 days! I was freaking out. This month, 28 days ....... WEIRD.)

I got a period when I started pumping when I returned to work (DD was about 4 months)... then didn't have another one for 2 1/2 months. I think it's normal.

yeah your period is usually pretty messed up after it finally comes back so if you got negative results on a test I bet you're fine. Like when I'm not nursing my periods are 28 days on the dot but after I have a baby and stop nursing they're all over the place for the first few months. Like 36 days apart, then one two weeks after that, then another long stretch like 30 some days. etc after about 4 or 5 months they get back to normal but it takes time. I'm sure you'll get it again but it could not be for a while still.

Yes, your period could have turned irregular with more consistent feeding. Wait a week more and if the test is still negative, I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't want to be pregnant, be more careful. As you seem to know, breastfeeding is not birth control. You don't have to get your period, to get pregnant.
