Breast Pump Motor Burned Out

When our first son was born in 2000 I purchased a Medela Pump in Style breast pump. Since then I've used it for our second son and many friends have used the pump for their babies. It has been used so much that the motor finally burned out! Has anyone ever had theirs repaired? What was the cost? I have a friend who would like to borrow it and we might try for another so I'm just wondering if it's worth fixing or if it's time to get a new one.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just want to let everyone know that everyone who shared this pump purchased their own tubing and accessories. Thanks for your concerns--still checking in to decide what to do with the burned out motor!

Hi C.,

I have a friend who just had twins, after having had two other children previously. Her breast pump wasn't working at full speed so she called "Milk Works" in Lincoln and also Medela. Both places suggested she purchase a new one. They said that useage with two or more children really does put wear and tear on the unit and that her best bet was a new unit. They both also said that repairing the unit is costly and makes more sense to replace.

Hope this helps!

C.

C.,

If you call the company they may be able to replace it. I would call them. They are kind of picky about things but, if you are the orignal owner than they may be more willing to work with you. Good luck.

I don't know about the motor, but it concenrs me that people are sharing your breast pump. A breast pump is not something that you want to be sharing especially not the tubing. Breast milk is a bodily fluid, the same as blood. The way I explain it to my patients is that you wouldn't use something that had someone's blood in it. If you have the pump sterlized and use different tubing, it would be fine. It just worries me that people don't understand that you should not be sharing breast pumps. Good luck with your motor.

i have to agree with one of the other commenters; you really shouldn't be sharing the pump at all. medela has an "open accesory" system which means microscopic droplets of breast milk can get throughout the tubing and into the motor of the unit where you can't clean...and changing the tubing does not fix the problem. infants have gotten sick and even died as a result of breathing back in bacteria and fungus that has grown inside the machine, and that can happen with just one user with an open system. when you have multiple users it is just like having your baby drink bodily fluids of everyone who has used the pump.
there are 3 closed systems on the market right now; avent isis (duo and uno), ameda (double and single) and dr. brown (single pump) (all of which are cheaper than a new medela pump in style if you shop online) and any of the hospital grade ones that you can rent.
if i were you i would throw that pump away and be thankful no one got sick from it.

I have a friend who's motor burned out and she called Medela and they sent her a new one and it was pretty inexpensive. I'm not sure how much, but I'd just call the company. Good luck!

Check with your insurance company, Medical, not prescription. The breast pump is considered a medical device. My medical insurance covered mine. You might be able to get a new one at no out of pocket cost to you.

You can call Medela and get a replacement motor. I borrowed a friends pump in style and my dog knocked it off the table and it broke the faceplate. I called them and they sent me a new one for $15. I don't know haw much a motor would be but I am sure it's not as much as a brand new breast pump. Call and find out.
