Hey mothers. I have a family member who is trying to get pregnant. Its her first child and she has been on birth control for a while. Since recently she has noticed that her breasts have been oozing breast milk when she squeezes/presses it. Is this possible and is this a premature sign that she may be pregnant.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I have spoken to my cousin and apparently its her pituitary glands that are reading off at the moment. Its not something I am familiar with and she has to see a specialist. Thanks for all the responses.

One of two things. She is either pregnant or her hormones are messed up. She needs to go see her doctor.

Hi, Grace. Well, if she's pregnant, she's pretty far along in the pregnancy if she's oozing from her breasts from being pregnant. It's not milk yet, BTW -- it would be colostrum, the pre-milk that is good for the baby until the true milk comes in after the third day after birth.

Your friend should go to a doctor, because there are other reasons for breasts oozing fluids. There's no substitute for a pregnancy test and a doctor's exam.

Peace,
Syl

That happened to me about 3 weeks before I actually got pregant with my first child. I had a problem with my pituitary gland. I had to go see an endrocronologist.

I oozed breast milk from the time that I started taking the pill at 17 until, well, still do. 12 years, not sure why. Now it's because of my son but before..?? Had several doctors check it out too.

I have not heard of early lactation as a sign of pregnancy but every woman is different. Either way she needs to see the doctor. If she is pregnant, it may be normal for her but if she is not it could a sign of something much worse. Have her see her GYN, ASAP!

Hi Grace,
I know when i was pregnant with my daughter that started happening in the second trimester...not constantly but if I was in the shower or rubbing soap on myself...so it sounds like your friend is pregnant! The best bet is to go to the doctor...

Hi. I am thinking that this breast milk issue is from the birth control. My friend in college used to have the same problem. She would be able to express breast milk too and it was from her bc pill. I am hoping I am wrong. You never know...but I do remember that happening to a friend of mine.

It could be anything, get a test or go to the doctor. There are just too many variables to determine a pregnancy on something like that. Either way, tell her to stop pressing and/or squeezing her breasts as that can cause negative effects of it is a difficult pregnancy and just wait to see what the doctor has to say.

I would check to make sure it is breast milk that she is oozing. Definitely go to the doctor. I recently had something that looked like colustrum coming out of my breast when I would press or squeeze and it ended up being something that a doctor had to go in and clean out. I wasn't pregnant, but had nursed 2 children before...so, it could be a number of things. Good luck!

Is she pregnant or TRYING to get pregnant? It is possible to produce milk if you are not pregnant. It's not normal to produce milk when not pregnant, so she should consult her doctor. My mom had a friend many years ago who had a tumor in her brain that caused her body to produce milk. It was not dangerous but there wasn't anything that could be done about it.

If she's pregnant, milk does not come before colustrom. Colustrom is yellowish, not white like milk and your breasts usually don't begin producing colustrom until later in the pregnancy. Please ask your family member to see her doctor to rule out any other condition...and do let us on Mamasource know what the outcome was.
