Hi Mamas, I'm looking for advice/guidance on buying a breadmaker. We love fresh bread and go through a ton of it but the price just keeps going up ($6 a loaf - really???). If you can recommend a brand or size that has worked for you, I'd love to hear it. There are different brands and sizes and I don't have a clue. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice. I'm going to take the plunge and buy the breadmaker, AND the artisan bread book. For the amount of bread that our house goes through, it looks like it will be worth the investment. My next post will likely be related to weight gain.

Hi L.-

I SO agree with the artisan bread...

I have a 'defective baking gene'...and *I* can make it! lol

I do have an old bread machine gathering dust...for a cheap price....

Best Luck!

I have a breadman right now. It's the 2nd machine we have had because we wore the first one out! I stopped using it for a while, but have recently gone back to it. I love it, because you can make so many things in it. I make dough for pizza and cinnamon rolls in it too. You always have the option to bake in the machine or to remove the dough and bake in the oven. There are so many different recipes for so many different kinds of bread. Play around with them until you find the one(s) you like best. You have so many options! I used to work as a baker, and made bread all the time. My machine bread comes out just as good as the 'from scratch.' It isn't hard, just time consuming. The machine just does it for you. Have fun with it! :)

I love my breadmaker! We used to make bread in it all the time. The only problem was that we loved how it tasted so much that we all gained weight from eating so much bread! So we cut down on how much we make for that reason only :)

We have a Sunbeam that I've had for a long time (10+ years, still working). It makes up to a 3 lb loaf.

I own a Breadman breadmaker. I bought it since it had great reviews and I've been really happy with it. We make one loaf about every 3-4 days for 3 people. I love it because it takes a few minutes to put the ingredients in, you set it and it's done in a few hours (depending what kind of loaf you're making). We put it on before we go to bed so that it's ready when we get up. I also recommend getting a bread knife. If you use a regular knife you will get thick slices. Also we use King Arthur's bread flour. You have to shop around to get a good price for that. Where I live Walmart and Wegmans sells it for cheap. Here is the link for the one we own: http://www.amazon.com/Breadman-TR520-Programmable-2-Pound...

I would get the book "Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day" and make your own. You don't need a breadmaker. Just flour, yeast, water, a big covered bowl, and a dutch oven. We got a breakmaker for a wedding gift. We subsequently regifted it to my sister-in-law. Now it's taking up space in her cabinet, not mine!

My mother bought a bread maker. We used it about 5 times. The breads never tasted good, so we stopped. If you have a stand mixer you can use it to mix & kneed the dough. Then you bake it in the oven. It tastes so much better that way. Though it does require a little more of your time.

I love mine...can't think of what brand it is at the moment. I've had it for about 8 years and use it at least once every 2-3 weeks, if not more and it is still going strong.

I use it to knead, never to bake, although it has the option to bake. I just add the ingredients, punch in how long I want it to knead and it does the rest. If I chose, it will even set a timer and let it rise in the machine before I dump the dough out to bake it.
