Bottle Causing Him to Spit Up?

I have a 3 month old son whom I have nursed since birth. He has had very little bottle feedings and even then, it has been breastmilk that I have pumped. Well, I had to return to work on Monday, and since then, he has had 3 bottles of pumped breastmilk a day. He has always been a big spitter. He had acid reflux that was making him so miserable that he is now on prevacid, and he still spits, but just smiles as he's doing it. I have also eliminated dairy, tomatoes, onions, chocolate, and caffiene from my diet to help with the reflux. Well, this week he's been spitting way more than he used to. My mom has kept him a couple of days when he went through 5-6 bibs and outfits. I'm just really worried that he's not getting enough to eat because of it, although my mom says he doesn't act more hungry than normal...except he wants to nurse right when I get home, no matter if he's just recently eaten (of course I nurse him immediately). I have him using Born Free vent air bottles that are bpa free and supposed to reduce gas. Could it be the increased bottle feeding or could he be stressed about not being with me during the day? I'm really worried about him. I only have 6 weeks I have to work through the end of the school year and then I'm quitting to stay home with him, but I don't want him to not get adequate nutrition for the next several weeks because I have to be at work.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Thanks for the help!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the help! Well, I tried to call the gastroenteroloist at Children's and they said they couldn't see my son until July! I called my pedi, who really is wonderful, and the nurse feels he may start getting better by July as he will be six months. Plus, by then, I'll be a sahm, so we won't have the big bottle issue. We cut back his Prevacid because we recently upped it a little, and that actually seems to have helped...weird, huh? Also, my sister used Dr. Brown bottles with her daughter and she spit up a ton too. So, I bought the playtex drop-ins yesterday and so far so good. We'll see if it continues to make a difference. I love that I can squeeze the air out! So much for the super-expensive, new bottles I HAD to get for my baby. My mom used the playtex bottles for me in the 80s. I guess we shouldn't try to fix what's not broken!
Thanks so much!!

I can only respond to the diet part.
I gave up all the dairy and milk to see if that helped and it didn't and on my own I found out that my baby quit throwing up her milk when I did not take my vitamin. I quit taking my vitamins and she never had another problem.

Everything does not come up when they spit up, unless maybe he keeps doing it, so as long as he keeps thriving and not losing weight, he should be good. You could look for signs that he is not dehydrated, like a sunken soft spot for instance. Any problems and I would not hesitate to call your dr.

Hi K.,
I went through this with my son for 3 years!
The prevacid never worked for us. But We finally jsut fed him small amounts at a time and let it sit for a bit and then feed him some more. Also try to feed him sitting up as much as youc an. Do not give him bottle to him laying down it will come right back up.
We tried every bottle but none seemed to make a difference.
Only with breastfeeding was the relflux the least amount. I think becuase he controled the amount he had inhis mouth and becasue it takes longer to breastfeed he digested better.
He will also let you know if he is hungry I promise he will not starve himself. Thank goodness!

If it persists I would take him to a gastroenterologist at Cooks Childrens in Ft Worth.
You can do a search.
They did allergy testing but nothing came up. He had his tonsils and adnoids at at 3 1/2 and he has done great!
Good Luck,
It is so hard to know what to do. Ihope you havea really good pediatrician it makes al the difference.
K.

It is possible that the bottle is making things worse because he's likely eating much faster. Also, have you considered your diet in terms of reducing his reflux issues? My oldest had that problem and it turned out to be dairy in my diet.

Try Playtex bottles with the drop-ins see if that does not help. My daughter had the same problem she was on Zantac for a few months, but after a few weeks it didn't seem to help much. They get little air while breastfeeding so I am sure the bottle is making him do this. I bought every bottle on the market and with her the Playtex worked the best.

my baby spit up until i figured out her "magic" formula ;)
she was nursed and at first still showed preference for the breast instead of a bottle, but..... her feeding success ended up being in an "orthodic" shaped nipple (by playtex) and she ate 2 oz. every 2 hours. hope this helps--take care

I doubt that the bottle is causing the increased reflux. When bottle feeding the tendancy is to cradle so you can see the baby's face, babies who have severe reflux must be fed in an upright position and kept in an upright position for a full thirty minutes after feeding. I have two children with this problem, one finally had a surgery to prevent it --most babies outgrow this. I do recomend seeing a gastroenterologist, my personal expierence was that Dr. Patel with Children's Medical in Dallas was way better than Cook Childrens he was simply more compsssionate and less of we see this all the time. If your baby is spitting up this much you need a doctors advice on positioning for feeding and sleeping! I urge you to put a pillow under your babies mattres to prop him while he is sleeping, you may need what is called a Danny Sling to keep hime from sliding down the bed, your pediatrician can help you locate one.

It could be a little of both. My oldest had reflux, but he did better on a bottle than on me. It all has to do with flow of milk. He may need a bigger hole/smaller hole or a different nipple. If I remember correctly there is a bottle for kids with reflux I think the brand is Brown or something like that.
