Bottle Advice

My 3 month old just got put on thickened formula because of aspiration issues. I have always used Dr. Brown's bottles and love them, but since we have to thicken the formula to a honey consistency, the formula won't go through the insert in the Dr. Brown's. Do any of you who have had to thicken formula have a recommendation for another type of bottle that worked well? The formula is so thick that we have to use a cross cut nipple and Max tires out very easily so I need the bottle to be as easy for him as possible. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The Avent bottles with the variable flow nipples worked great! Thanks to everyone. Now if I can just get him sleeping through the night =>

My son had reflux and we had to thicken his bottles as well. We used Avent and they make nipples specifically for thickened formula. They worked great for us.

My 3 month old daughter has laryngomalacia, so she is ALWAYS in danger of aspirating her formula. I use Simply Thick and I use the honey consistency, only because it takes less of the gel to get the same thickness, than using more of the nectar just to get to the same thickness. So as you can probably see now, that's a big money saving trick. But back to the point. We use Dr. Brown's bottles and have had absolutely NO problem with them. But I am thinking that maybe you are having to make your son's to a thicker consistency than what I'm using, so in that case, I would move up to the Y shaped nipples and see how that works. I would recommend staying on Dr. Brown's because of them being the best for cutting back on air and gas issues. We don't want to add yet another issue besides the threat of aspiration...I think we have enough to deal with the other issue!!! But in the end, go with your gut feeling. Only you know in the end what's best for your child. Good luck!!!

avent makes variable flow nipples that work very well in this situation. that's what we used when my son had to go through the same thing.

Hi K.,

We used the Avent bottles with a 3 nipple initially and then went to the 4 nipple when my son got a little older. We only thickened to a nectar consistency, though, so you may need to start with the 4 for honey.

Good Luck!

K.,

The Y-cut nipples don't work your son? Hmmm, they worked for my daughter who used the honey consistency too. Maybe you need a bigger size for the 6 month olds if they have them? I never tried any other bottles with my daughter than Dr. Brown's. Wish I could be more help!

I have used the Dr. Brown's bottles...and when my son got older, we started using the "Y" cut nipples, which let more thru (like for cereal and baby food if we were in a hurry). Worked great!

But yours may be thicker, so I might try those bottles I've seen that are for baby food called "Baby Food Nurser" by Sassy.
