Booster Seats - Holly,MI

Wondering if anyone has the same problem I do. My daughter is 40 pounds and should be in a regular booster seat...however, we do not have shoulder belts in our 1988 car. We cannot afford to install the belts right now. All the booster seats I see require shoulder/lap belts. Does anyone know of one that either uses an internal harness to over 40 lbs or does not need a shoulder belt to hold the child in?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I was checking online, and Safety First just came out with one called the APEX that allows the harness to be used up to 65 pounds. So I am going to buy that one for 129.00. And hopefully by the time she is 65 pounds, we will have shoulder belts. But for now, it will work.

Thanks for everyone's repsonses!!

Hi C.-

There's a site called www.elitecarseats.com that sells nothing but carseats and has excellent information. My daughter is 40 pounds and I am keeping her in her convertible car seat with a 5 point harnesss as long as possible. They are the safest. But, go on the site and read up on it. It's so important to keep them safe!

I know one of the brands made a booster seat at one time that was just the base and then it had a thing that went over the childs lap. The the lap belt was used over that. I havn't seen it in stores recently but....u might be able to find one at like a garage sale or something like that. They worked wonderful.

I have an evenflo booster for my son that has both a 5 point harness and can be used with a shoulder belt. It was a bit more pricey than some of the others, but probably less expensive than having shoulder belts installed on your vehicle.
I just looked it up on Babies R Us website and its called the Evenflo Generations Devonshire Booster Car Seat. Its about $90.

From what I know you CAN'T use the 5 point harness when they are over 40 lbs. They will fail in an accident.

The Eddie Bauer carseat my son is in goes up to 80lbs. I suggest you just get a new carseat. I am sure you could get one at a mom to mom sale if you are a little tight money wise. Good luck.

They make booster seats with a 5 point harness just like infant seats. You can go to: http://www.infant-car-seats.com to see some of them. The "convertible" car seats just grow with them, and most can be used to 60 + pounds. Some are expensive, but cheaper then having shoulder belts installed and your daughter will be safe.
Good luck,
J.

Hi C.,

I just picked up a Fisher Price Safe Embrace Delux, it goes forward facing up to 55lbs and has a 5pt harness it's $130 online or $180 in stores.

Britax seats go up to 65lbs or 80lbs in a 5pt harness. But they start around $250 and go up...

email me if you want to know where I got mine.

Excellent job getting you child into the right seat!! I commend you for doing the research!

I have a friend who is a single mom and she did allot of research on booster etc.
She ended up getting a Britax carseat. Go to the link below. Children are still dying when seat belt fail in accidents. That is why it is so important to get one that still has the harness and teathers to lock them down to the seat. My Friend did get one of these carseats from a organization that is giving them to those who can't otherwise afford them. They are doing it in memory of their child who was killed in a accident when his seatbelt failed at age 3. If you want more information just let me know. Below is the link to the Organization that is offering assistance to families to get a Britax

But this carseat will be with your child for a long time and worth it for their safety.

I see that you posted this a month ago. I just now saw it. I happen to have a harness that I never ended up using. If, for some reason, you haven't bought it yet or can return it, you can have mine and see if it works. Email me at ____@____.com if you would like me to send it to you. S.

C.,
There are some carseats, that have a weight limit up to 100 lbs. with the harness straps. I found a website that lists all the carseats I could ever think of and describes the details about them. You can get some info from that site then go to the particular manufacturer for more information and where to buy. This is the site, hope it helps. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm
