Our dog just got diagnosed with a disease that will shortly take her life. Does anyone know of any books to help my 4 year old understand?
Thanks!

I believe Mr. Rogers (of the TV show) wrote a book called "When a Pet Dies." I haven't had to deal with this yet, but with a 15-year-old dog and an 11-year-old dog, it's coming.

When our dog died, the vet suggested a book called Dog Heaven. It was pretty good. We didn't get it before the dog died, so I don't know whether it would be helpful in that way, but it was nice for our little guys to be able to talk about where Lucy went.

The book "Dog Heaven"is a great book. We used it last year when our dog was hit by a car. My son still gets it out every once in a while and reads it when he's missing the dog.

Where Do Balloons Go? by Jamie Lee Curtis is very touching. It doesn't get too specific and it would leave room for you to share with her what you feels she is ready to hear.

So sorry to hear about your pup,
A.

there is an awesome book called I love you always- its about a boy and his dog elfie who gets older and dies- my kids love it and we put our dog down last month- my boys were there with us when we did it as well- our ped recommended it because he said what the boys invision in their head is so much worse then what it was- and the boy s handled it great! The first day they fought a lot and were unruley- but other than that they were great and they feel good about being there for her. Good Luck- I know it is so hard!

Lifetimes is a great little book. I also have a list of them on my web page. I'm so glad you are facing this problem with your little one. It's sad but a great teaching moment and bonding time.

go to granny's best picks book store and click on bereavement books for kids, You can read the reviews, make a list of what you think will help and go to your library to pick up the books there. Or purchase them on line from the bookstore which is an amazon affilliate.
Good luck and blessings on your family. It's always hard to say good bye to our pets.
