The Giving Tree and Dinosaur Vs. Bedtime are two of our favorites. What I like about them for very little ones is that there are only a few words on each page (for the most part and for the pages with more words you can paraphrase) so the story moves along pretty quick. Just remember that babies have a very short attention span, so anything you pick it going to have to be brief.

Do you have pets? If you do, my son LOVED the interactive books by Matthew Van Fleet (DOG and CAT). Brown Bear Brown Bear is a good one, too.

At that age, very, very short books. A few good ones:

Peek a Who?
Pat the Bunny

Giggles with Daddy

My kids have enjoyed books by Sandra Boynton, Karen Katz, and Eric Carle to name a few.

Goodnight Moon and Brown Bear Brown Bear, What do you see are much loved in our home, too!

At that age, peekaboo type books and books with baby faces are really fun, too. Scholastic has a great one that we rented from the library (and keep renewing it b/c my son is enjoying it so much!)...it's called Hide and Peek.

The board book version of Dr. Seuss's Foot Book was wildly popular with my daughter at that age, too! Here are a few more ideas: http://astore.amazon.com/motiwiouki-20

I also found this person's blog cute and a GREAT resource for books for kids: http://www.sillyeaglebooks.com/

Hope this helps! :)

We're big fans of the board book versions of Eric Carle's stuff -"Very Hungry Caterpillar," "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, " -there are lots of them and we have two -one for colors and one for numbers that are big hits as well. Big, colorful pictures in board books is what you're looking for at this age. They will be chewed on! There's a company now making eco friendly books for little ones that are made to be gummed and chewed on and won't mess up with that. You can find them at Target and specialty book stores. Another board book author that's been a big hit at our house is Sandra Boynton -rhyming, fun illustrations -good stuff -"Birthday Monsters," "Snuggle Puppy," (this is an all-time favorite), "Moo, Baa, La, La, La," and "Blue Hat, Green Hat" have all been greatly enjoyed by us! All of these are books my boys started with before age 1 and continue to enjoy now at ages 2 and 4.

**Just saw the response about "Not the Hippopotamus" by Boynton -that one is a fave as well! Personally it's probably my favorite!

Great question! I'm a huge proponent of reading to children, no matter how young. Here are a couple of articles I wrote with recommendations of great and bestselling children's books:

At your child's age I think we were reading "The Going to Bed Book" by Sandra Boynton - both my daughters loved that book. In fact, I think I still have it memorized from reading it to them so much - 4 years later!

I hope these lists help!

Hope this helps!

My mom gave me Ten Little Ladybugs when my first was born, and the poor thing is about to fall apart, it's been loved so much! We use baby sign language with our kids, and they all learned to sign along with the book, pointing to the animals and learning to count.

We also love Time for Bed. The illustrations are beautiful, and the poetry is soothing. I sometimes just recite it to my kids and they instantly relax. And I've read it so many times, I know it by heart.

My 9 month old's favorite book is a "touch and feel" book. It has photos of animals, like a duckling, and then there's a circle cut out of the page and synthetic yellow fur sticking out. So he loves to pet the duckling. The next page has fake wool on a sheep, etc. He digs through his little basket of books and always picks that one!

Hi,
At that age my son loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Eric Carle). Here are a few other favorites: Hooray for Fish (Lucy Cousins); Jamberry (Bruce Degen). He also liked books by these authors: Eric Carle, Bob Barner, Lois Ehlert, Denise Fleming, Audrey Wood. They all have quite a few titles.
Hope this helps--I was a former librarian until I became a stay at home mom.

my kids both liked "first word" kind of books, with one pic on each page, like a shoe, or a flower - they have them at walmart.
