I am in need of a book around fifth or sixth grade reading level that has the main character being an animal. Does anyone know of a good book for a boy. He had one about an animal who helped the army during a war but he can't recall the title. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all! My son has a very hard time picking out books. This was especially difficult because he doesn't have a very vivid imagination. We ended up picking up a few of the suggestions. Now we have to have his teacher approve one that she considers appropriate. Nora P found exactly the book I was looking for! THANKS

Hi P.,

I am interested to know what kind of business you started. I too have my own business selling books for Barefoot Books. I saw your post and wanted to help.

Try this link: http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/productone.ph...

It is a link for Animal Tales which is an anthology of Animal stories from their perspective. They are stories from many countries. It's really cool that you are looking for something so specific for your son.

Let me know offline if you'd like further help with selecting some more books. Barefoot has some really unique animal stories. Enjoy!

You could do a search on amazon.com. Start with children's books, fiction or non-fiction, narrow to animals, and then age 9-12. You can even narrow the list by which kind of animal you would like to read about. you may find lots of interesting books in his reading level. You can also search for that book about the dog and the army by searching your list for dog, army. Good luck.

There are a lot of great suggestions here. I second the Redwall series, but the it may be a little difficult. It has a grade level equivalent of late 7th grade, early 8th grade so it is a title you may want to save for later. Avi is another great other that writes a lot of stories using animals as the main character. These would be very appropriate for your sons reading level. A few titles that come to mind are Poppy, Poppy and Rye, and Ragweed.

If you call the childrens dept of your library, they will probably be able to give you the title you're looking for (if no one on the site can help you).

I would look at the books written by Gary Paulsen. They usually involve a young boy, an animal or animals, and the wilderness. He is one of my son's favorite authors. My son who is in 5th loved reading Dogsong and Hatchet. My nephews now, in college, all read his books and loved them as well. We expect to read all of his books. I help out at the middle school library and these are very popular because I am often reshelving them. ENJOY!

Because of Winn-Dixie is great (and it's an award winning book). Winn-Dixie is a dog. He is one of the main characters, but the story is not told from his perspective or in his words.

Hi, I have a fourth grade boy, and we are always on the look out for books! Here's my two cents!

#1. He is reading "Marley and Me" now, and since it's coming out as a movie, he's especially excited! It all revolves around a dog. There is a version that's kid friendly that appropriate for your age son, as my niece just finished it and she's in 6th grade.

#2. Oldie but Goodie: Where the Red Fern Grows. Its a classic, and the book revolves around a boy and his two dogs.

I teach 5th grade. There's a book that's really popular with boys called Redwell. It's actually part of a series. It's pretty hard reading though. There is a graphic novel by the same (same story, but in comic book form) that's really cool. He also may like a graphic novel called Mouse Guard that's about a mice army. Both of these books feature all animal characters.

I am starting a series called Guardians of Ga'Hoole that is at the 5th/6th grade level about some owls that are captured and must escape. There are several books in the series and it looks really good so far.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me about other books for kids!

I'm sure others will have more recent suggestions, but I remember liking Lassie Come Home (unlike the series, the original book is told from the dog's perspective), Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Julie of the Wolves, and My Side of the Mountain (the last two are more like nature stories with children as the protagonists.) Lloyd Alexander, the author of the Prydain books (The Black Cauldron, etc.) had several books with cats as main characters - Time Cat, The Cat Who Wished to be a Man.

There are a lot of classics with animals. The Wind in the Willows is a great book with talking/fantasy animals. Black Beauty. Rudyard Kipling - my kids love it when I read the Just So stories aloud.

And of course the classic tear-jerkers - Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, which I think traumatized me for life!

Because of Winn Dixie is my suggestion. It's written by Kate DiCamillo and she has a number of other fine books with animals as the main character. She is an award-winning author and you and your son will not be disappointed in these fine books. Winn Dixie was even made into a movie about three years ago.

Favorite book! Tale of Despereaux - very good book! Main character is a mouse. Nice read - not too difficult. Ol' Yeller - good, too.

DH says Call of the Wild.

Not an animal as main character, but some books I loved at that age were The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Shiloh, and Island of the Blue Dolphin. Wow-that brings back memories!!

I have a read a book by Ann M. Martin called "A Dog's Life: An Autobiography of a Stray" that I liked. I found it at Target a couple of years ago, but you might be able to still find it a regular bookstore or Amazon.

He might be thinking of "Rats of NIHM." It's taught in a lot of schools.

My son is in 5th grade and he also likes the Redwall series and he very much enjoys the Warrior series. The story line is about a clan of wild cats (house cat variety). Very little humans in it. It is about the interaction in each clan, and rival clans. They have made about 20 books about it.

The Redwall series. The main character is a mouse and goes into battle. From Amazon As the inhabitants of Redwall Abbey bask in the glorious Summer of the Late Rose, all is quiet and peaceful. But things are not as they seem. Cluny the Scourge, the evil one-eyed rat warlord, is hell-bent on destroying the tranquility as he prepares to fight a bloody battle for the ownership of Redwall. This dazzling story in the Redwall series is packed with all the wit, wisdom, humor, and blood-curdling adventure of the other books in the collection, but has the added bonus of taking the reader right back to the heart and soul of Redwall Abbey and the characters who live there.

Magical, mystical, and the stuff of legends, this stunning tale of good battling with--and ultimately triumphing over--evil takes the reader on a roller-coaster adventure that barely draws breath from the first page to the very last. Brian Jacques is a true master of his craft.

My 11 year old loves them.

Hi My son also loved Redwall at that age, and I highly recommend that series, and I'd also recommend a book series about "Hank the Cowdog." These books are so funny and well written, that I enjoy them as much as the kids. I used to read these aloud to my kids when they were younger (they are highschoolers now) and they would always beg for more. I guarantee you'll love them!

I was also going to suggest the Tale of Despereaux and I noticed that it is coming out in theaters as a movie in December. I typed "animal books for boys" into my computer and got a site from a university. I thought you could start there and then check for reviews for certain titles on Barnes and Noble.com, etc... I know how you feel. I have a son in 4th grade, reading at a 7th grade level and I struggle to find books for him. James Patterson has started writing for kids and I hear he is doing quite well! Good Luck! : )
