My 5 year old has been telling little white lies....When I told him he needed to tell the "truth"...He didnt' know what truth or lying met....Does anyone have any good books to read about this? I know I need to teach and explain to him..but thought I would back it up with something of interest. Let me know. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just bought the Berenstein Bears "Tell the Truth" book. We haven't read it yet but I'm excited! Especially since there are other books in their series!

When my daughter was young (she is 14 now) I bought a series of books by Joy Berry called "Help Me Be Good". Each small book was directed at a specific behavior....example...whining, teasing, lying, complaining, interrupting, etc..

They had great examples geared toward the youngster that understands what is going on...EASY to read and discuss.

My daughter loved the books.

I know they are sold in Bookstores and on Amazon but I have also seen them in the local library.

Good luck.

I agree with the Berenstein Bears "Tell the Truth" book. Also, "Franklin Fibs" by Paulette Bourgeois.

The Berenstein (sp?) Bears have a book at Target about it. It's in the kids reading section...."Truth" is in the title.

There is a game you can play that will be very concrete for him.

Get three little cups that you can't see through. Put a piece of candy or a toy under one of the cups (without him seeing); tell him "there is a _____ under one of these cups. Can you guess which one?" Do this a few times to build his trust that you are indeed putting something under one of the cups. Mix the cups around....just play with it. Then, once he is in to it and trusting you, use the three cups but DO NOT put anything under any of them. This will probably work best if you use a favorite candy (small pieces) and as he finds them he gets to eat it. Then when you do not keep your word and he is guessing and never finding it, he will be crushed. Then you can explain how little things like not keeping your word makes you feel the same way and you lose trust in him. Emphasize the word trust. Hope this helps. I have used this in my classes at church to teach trust. I hope I explained it clearly enough; please let me know if you have questions.

Not to be trite but The Bible is the greatest source of truth. You can get a Children's version and read Bible stories and many involve telling the truthful or being truthful. Isn't it just as important to teach your child to tell the truth as to teach him WHY he needs to tell the truth?
