Boil... Ugh!

My 2 and a half year old son just developed a boil (looks like a boil) right in the fold of his pelvic area (where the scrotum meets the side of the leg). I hope it is not an insect bite.

The area around what looks like a "pimple" is quite pink in color and swollen and hard to the touch. I think the infection is making the bump hard, then there is a little pimple right in the middle.

So I am assuming its a boil. We have some antibiotic cream that his ped prescribed my son a month ago for a diaper rash, we had a refill on the cream so we went and got it today. I hope it helps otherwise I will have to call the dr tomorrow.

any advice on how to clean and treat such a boil on a very wriggly toddler? He is in pain and does not want me NEAR his pelvis. Diaper changing.. well, lets just say I do it standing up as he refuses to lay down.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Took my boy to see the Pediatrician today (Monday). Lucky they had a cancellation so they squeezed me in. It took three of us to hold my little guy down as the doctor "cleaned" the boil, and take cultures to be sent to the lab for testing (for MRSA). We will know by Thursday what the outcome is. But he seemed confident that it is only a staff infection that flared up again. (He had it a few months ago, but nothing like this.. just small pimples)

He is on oral antibiotics and I am on a cleaning mission... (Dr. said we dont all need to be treated but just to keep an eye on it and change the "dressing" and diaper frequently.

Thanks again, you all have been a great help!

Definitely take him to a doctor! My cousin had a "boil" like this near his scrotum when he was about 4 and by the time his mom got him into the doctors office he was getting sick from infection. They were worried he might end up in the hospital. If the infection gets into the blood stream kids can get SO sick, really fast, but if they catch these things early they can be treated and fixed easily. Plus, they may be able to drain it... which will make him feel so much better.

Good Luck!

i would call his pedi and/or get to an urgent care clinic ASAP. could def be some type of infection, maybe MRSA, likely not, but when you hear of a boil, that's probably beyond what a topical med is going to help - he needs to have it looked at. if it's a bacterial infection, he probably needs an oral antibiotic that's gonna get into his bloodstream rather than a topical. hope he turns out just fine, please don't wait til tomorrow - this kind of stuff can get out of control FAST, especially in such a little guy. good luck :)

My son had a similar situation in a similar place. It turned out to be a staph infection and the boil had to be lanced and drained. He needed some pretty serious antibiotics. In fact everyone in the whole house had to be treated and I had to clean like crazy.

Take him in to see the doctor.

Please get him to an ER immediately, from his symptoms (pimple, swollen and hard to the touch) it sounds as if it could be MRSA, and it's important to get treatment started ASAP. If it is MRSA he'll need to be put on an oral antibiotic, it has to heal from the inside out as the tendency for a MRSA infection is to burrow inward. They may prescribe an ointment as well since you won't be able to keep a bandage on it.

Put the cream on it for today, but take him in tomorrow - espcially if its painful. Our ped wants to see us us with an infection like this to test for MRSA and make sure it doesn't develop into a full blown abscess.
Good luck.

Are you sure it isn't just a big pimple?

If it's a boil he will need to be treated for it. They can be very dangerous and can cause MRSA- he would need to be tested for it. If it were me and I was 99% sure it wasn't just a bug bite or pimple I would take him to the Ped. tomorrow. Whatever you do don't try to pop it. It will just cause the infection to move to another area of his bum and another one will show up.

Take him to a doctor! My niece had that it turned out to be mrsa. I'd rather be on the safe side and go to the er if it were me because my niece went from ok to high fever and pain very quickly she had to be out under to have it drained bc of the location.

Keep putting the cream on it for today, as often as you can. But be sure to call the ped first thing tomorrow morning, as it could be a staph/strep infection that may need more than just cream.

I was going to suggest that you lance it yourself...yay! you did!! I'm so glad he's relieved!!

I had a boil on my butt once - it was years ago and it hurt REALLY bad - showed up in what seemed like minutes - and it was about an inch - I shower twice daily - so I don't think it was from poor hygiene!! :) My husband lanced it - it was gross - but better than paying the Dr $160 to do it...as soon as it was lanced and drained - we put a large gauze pad over it and put alcohol rubs on it every few hours - I was good the next day...great after he lanced it (and he will be upset if he reads that I posted this on a public site!!)
