Has anyone ever experienced blood-tinged mucusy diarreah in their child? My daughter is going on 7 days with severe cramps and diarreah and there is sometimes blood-tinge in it. I took her to the doctor, but he didn't seem concerned. My gut tells me to be concerned. What are your thoughts? My daugher is 3.

What can I do next?

My thoughts are that Mama's gut knows best! I have an adult friend who gets this when he eats gluten. Perhaps food allergies are something to think about.

I agree with Shirley! Take your daughter in...my son had the same thing happen last year and it lasted almost 9 days!!!!! They did a stool analysis earlier on, and it turned out he had salmonella! Obviously that can be extremely dangerous in general, especially with a 2-3 year old!!! I am not DIAGNOSING your child in any way, but mom's know!!! Take your child in for another opinion!

Get a second opinion, mom knows best!!! Sometimes, it takes a 3rd or 4th or 5th opinion, you get the idea........ But, I learned from experience. Mom knows best!! The doctors don't know your child like you do.

Go with your gut. I would get a second opinion for sure. It may be nothing, but you never know. I am a 39 yr old who about 7 years ago, after several months of experiencing the same symptoms your daughter is, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I had a few doctors tell me they weren't concerned either, but I knew they were wrong. It wasn't diagnosed until after I finally saw a gastroenterologist and had a colonoscopy that I got diagnosed. I don't mean to scare you, but am just urging you to follow your instincts. Good Luck.

Please look up intussusception--http://kidshealth.org/parent/system/surgical/intussuscept...

My son had it when he was 7 months old and a serious medical emergency. It was not a blood tinged, it was jelly textured red poop....so that is a huge difference....

Has she had antibiotics recently? My 21 yr got this when he was 22 mos old and it was pseudo-membraneous colitis from the antibiotic stripping the lining of his clon. His turned life threatening, he had to have a colonoscopy for it to be properly diagnosed. Good luck.

I don't know if it's the same sign in an older child, but I know in an infant it could be a sign of an allergy. Maybe try some watered down gaterode and adding the B(ananas)R(ice)A(pples)T(oast) diet to her normal foods. Hope she feels better soon, extra love always helps :)

My newborn had bloody mucus in his stools when he was about 1 month old along with horrible cramping which led to much screaming and crying right after I fed him and when I would lay him down. My Dr. said it was most likely a food allergy. I took a few things out of my diet (I was nursing) and he became and angel baby--normal stools, and no more screaming/crying in pain. I've slowly added things back in to test them out and find out what specifically he's allergic to. It was a relief to know what it was, and also see no more blood in his stools (scared me to death!) I don't know if this applies to older children as well but you may want to look into it. The first things they had me take out of my diet were dairy, soy, chocolate, strawberries and nuts. Not easy-that's for sure- but worth it. Then if it is none of those, they have you try eggs, wheat and one other.
Anyway, this just my experience. Hope it helps along with the other great advice given already.

Hi D.,

This is definitely NOT normal and should be looked into further. I recommend finding a better doctor. In the meantime, you can try giving her some Colidal Silver, which may help settle her intestinal cramping.

Also, I would definitely NOT give her Gatorade or any other sports drink. Even watered down, these drinks contain excessive sugar, artificial dyes and preservatives that can further aggravate her intestinal problems.

Best wishes to you! :)

D., as an ex ER nurse i would take your daughter to see somebody else. Your Doctor has given no explanation for your daughters condition. If she had this problem for 48 hours then i wouldn't be too concerned, but the fact that this has now gone on for a week and even though your daughter is three years old, their little bodies are just not as strong as ours are. Think about how you would feel if you had these symptoms for a week, would you accept what that Doctor had told you? Take her to another Ped or to Urgent Care. They dehydrate so quickly which causes so many other problems too and she must be miserable having tummy ache all the time and having to go potty all the time too. Be proactive, you are her Mom, don't worry if the Doctor gets offended, he would do the same for his child. Don't leave it any longer D. take her today.
Good luck. S..

I think y9ou should talk to another pediatrician, especially if you didn't get any answers for what it might be. Keep in mind that if a child has diarrhea, it irritages their little butt and it may be bleeding from there, but not by very much. There is definitely a nasty stomach virus going around. My ped recommended Kaopectate. Also, keep her hydrated and balanced w/Pedialyte (the generic ones taste nasty).

Hope baby is better soon.

Yes! Be worried! Her intestines could be twisted and that is very serious. Ask the doctor why he is not worried. Maybe he has a good reason. But then insist that he do some tests to see what is happening. Or take her to urgent care. Good luck!

I went through something similar when my daughter was 2 months old. They said it was nothing (sometimes said it wasn;t blood...what else would it be with a breastfed baby?)Finally...I was told it is either a anal fissure, viral infection, or milk allergy. I had to take dozens (literally) of poopy diapers in for them to test.

It is likely to be a milk allergy. You should try cutting milk and whey/soy products from her diet. You will find these in almost everything you eat. You will have to go organic.
My niece was pooping blood and the gastroenterologist told my sister to remove all of these items from her diet, and now her daughter is fine.
Stay away from drinks and foods high in sugar. They will just add to the cramping and diarreah. Pedialyte is good. Try the Brat diet.
If you would like more info or to contact me please let me know.
Good luck!
