Blood Clot

You have a right to be scared. This can be very dangerous to a pregnancy, both for you and your baby. I know its hard to not pick up your 2 year old, but it will be worse if the blood clot becomes worse. There are many different stages, and since they sent you home on bedrest, I can only assume that the clot is sealed and is "old" so it is at least stable. Very important... if you have any bleeding, notice a decrease in the babies movement, and sudden sharp pains, go to the hospital immediately. The most common cause of this, if you want to research it, look it up by the name "abruptio placenta", or placental abruption. Keep all your doctor's appointments, and do any testing they recommend. Be religious about it because its both of you that are at risk.

As for your mother being on Coumadin, it's not that type of clot. Somehow, the placenta has either separated partially or been damaged. This can seal and never be an issue, or become worse. It does put you at risk for other complications, but not clotting disorder similar to your mothers. If they suggest c-section, from personal experience, its not that bad when considering the option of laboring and having an emergency c-section when both of your live's are at risk. But there are many women that have had normal vaginal deliveries with this same condition. Good luck.

I had bleeding when I was pregnant with my son, who is now 5 years old, and it was called a sud-correonic hemmorage ( I think thats how you spell it). But I had bleeding for a few days and they put me on bed rest and I was fine. They told me that it wasn't something that was uncommon. You have a blood clot that is suppose to absorb back into the body and in some women it doesn't and that's why you bleed.

Hello S. - I had the same thing w/ my 1st child (who is a happy, healthy 4 year old now). At the time I thought I was having a miscarriage, because I passed the blood clot as well. It scared the he** out of me, I was only 3 1/2 months preggo at the time. The dr. said it was 'fairly' common, although I don't know of anyone personally that this has happened to. The bleeding would come and go... but had stopped by the time I was around 6 months into the pregency.

I am more like your mother. I have problems with blood clots and have to take Coumadin. Coumadin causes birth defects and we were not sure if we'd be able to have a baby or not. It turned out it was much easier than expected. I was put on Lovenox injections (it's VERY EXPENSIVE, but we were fortunate enough to have had good insurance) and, most importantly, we had a phenomonal high risk OB.

If you are worried, I would probably get a second opinion. In my opinion, you cannot put a price on peace of mind. I highly, highly, highly recommend my high risk OB. If you are not considered "high-risk," they also do consultations for other OB's who send a lot of their patients over to have ultrasounds/consultations done. I consulted with Dr. Stanley several times and then once I got pregnant I saw Dr. Mirabile. They are top-notch and I will be using them for any future pregnancies.

Yes be on guard for any pain or lack of movement in the baby.

However when this clot is absorbed by the body it's not going to pass into your blood stream and travel to your heart or lungs. It will break down and the chemicals will be absorbed like internal stitches do.

I would think with your mother's clotting issues you would have to be on guard for your own clots in your blood vessels/veins/arteries but inside you uterus it can't get back into your blood stream.

I don't mean to feek you out, but have every right to be worried about a blood clot. My sister had one at 26 weeks and the baby was still born. because the placenta detacted because of the clot. She had a pain as it happened. If you have a pain so bad it about knocks you over go to the hospital and have them do an ultrasound right away and get the heart beat. They took 4 hours before they did an ultrasound on my sister and it was too late. I hope everything goes well, but there can be problems and I hope you don't have any. I would follow the doctors orders and stay as inactive as possiable.

I had the very same problem with my first pregnancy, the bleeding and big clots happend in the first trimester and I was so freaked out! He put me on "pelvic rest" for the weekend. The pregnancy continued just fine and we had a very healthy baby girl. I can't remember why the doc said this happend, but he gave me peace of mind that it would work out and it did.
