Blocked Milk Duct 5 Mos Post Partum?

Hello, I saw my OB yesterday who wants me to get a mamo and US on my right breast for a rather large bump. To the best of my recollection it is the same lump that appeared when I was in the hospital post partum, the day my milk came in. He checked the lump then and was fairly certain it was a blocked milk duct as neither of us had noticed it prior to that day when I began feeling around due to the milk sensation. I had to stop breast-feeding shortly thereafter and the lump substantially lessened which led me to believe it was definitely the milk (I had a very hard/long time suppressing milk production with a sports bra, took at least two weeks) and he told me he wasn't concerned but was ordering the tests to be safe- if he was worried he'd have me in same day but as it is, the tests are in two weeks. Has anyone experienced this post partum after they stopped producing milk? I have never had a mamo and am trying to believe that there is nothing to worry about since I remember the day I noticed it and it coincided with the milk coming in.

What can I do next?

I had the same thing but because of my age they skipped the mamo because they said they wouldnt be able to see much and went straight for the ultra sound. I had the lump removed w/ a minor surgery but because of the location was sore and unable to pick up my son for a few days. MIne was there while I breastfed too but it never went away it was fibroid tissue nothing cancerous but I felt much better once it was removed because there was no longer a lump there to worry me. It was hard perfectly round and felt like a marble.

yes that's normal...I had that too. but, go for the tests like the dr suggested. my dr also said that you can "produce" milk up until 18 months after bf.

I had something similar. At my annual checkup, my doctor noticed a lump in my breast and sent me for a mammogram. (This was about 6 months after I had stopped breastfeeding - which I had done for 18 months) The mammogram and ultrasound determined that it was not cancerous, that it was a cyst. They suggested I have it asperated. It had been awhile since I had stopped breastfeeding, but I started to recall how this was the same exact spot that had absolutely killed me when I had stopped. I had figured there was just a pocket of milk left that didn't drain. Anyway, I made the appointment to have it asperated, but of course on that day my daughter was incredibly sick and I had to cancel. By the time I got around to rescheduling, the lump disappeared - it had drained out on its own. (Granted, this was probably almost another year gone by at this point - life gets busy!) At my next physical, I asked the doctor to double-check. She said she no longer felt it, and it must have been from stopping breastfeeding. She said not to worry about it any more. That was about 4 years ago at this point. Good luck!

Hi R.,

I also found a lump around the same time and was still breastfeeding at the time. I had an ultrasound and it was found to be a cyst. It was scary going through all that...you always think the worst!

Having had both blocked milk ducts and cysts I would say this:
Blocked ducts are usually sore and painful while cysts may or may not be. The breasts go through lots of changes through the whole process as you know....most likely your lump is related to that.

I doubt very much is a clogged milk duct. If you are not nursing, you are not producing milk, so there should be nothing there to cause a clog.
That said... perhaps it's possible for other fluids moving through your breast to cause a clog?
Is the area hot and tender to the touch? When I have had clogged ducts in the past they have been excruciatingly painful, very hot to the touch and tender. I was able to nurse through them successfully, but the pain was terrible.
If you had a clogged duct- you'd know it!!

Hi there!
It was a similar situation that i had each time i would stop nursing. My ducts became lumpy and I would end up with a mastitus.Try massaging the area, warm cloths etc...but it has to be consistant. The tests your Dr. has ordered should put you at ease-any changes in milk production can cause blocked ducts-what a pain-I know, but worth it!
Hope everything turns out well-prayers for you!

a couple months after I stopped nursing I still had lumps in both my breasts. They were unsightly and a little bit tender. I used heat and gentle massage to express the last bits of fluid. Had to do this for a few days but they finally went away. Good luck!
