Bleeding While Taking the Pill

I recently began taking the birth control pill for a few reasons. First, I have 3 kids 5 and under, and I am trying to prevent pregnancy. I am also taking the pill because I was having some irregular spotting leading up to me period, attributed to having nursed for over a year and not getting a period for a full year. My ob/gyn prescribed me the pill to help stablize my horomone levels and stop the spotting. I have been on the pill for going on 3 weeks and I have been bleeding the entire time. I feel like taking the pill has made my bleeding worse, and not better as I had intended. I read the information leaflet last night and it stated that I could expereince irregular bleeding for up to 3 months. I can not deal with this bleeding for 3 months! I am soo tired of it, and tired of being "out of commission" so to speak. Has anyone else expereinced additional bleeding when starting the pill? I was on the pill in my late teens and early twenties and did not have this problem. I really feel like just stopping the pill all together and being careful in other ways... not sure what to do. Thanks!

What can I do next?

talk to your doctor - sometimes you receive a little too much progesterone (I had this problem). My doctor gave me a small dose of estrogen to take for awhile that balanced things out and solved the problem.

I just recently started back on the Pill after weaning my 1 year old. I just finished the 3rd week of pills. I have been having spotting almost the entire time. This never happened to me before either and I was on the Pill for years. I also did not have a period for over 1 1/2 years between being pregnant and nursing. I have been annoyed and a little nervous about it as well, so I'm glad to know I'm not alone. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I am planning on giving it another month or 2 and see what happens.

Dear D.,
For the sake of your family, do not take the pill. I have used the basal temperature method and it really worked for me (natural family planning). It did not affect my hormones. There are many professionals who know that this is too tricky of a game to play especially when there is bleeding. There may be other things in your diet that can affect bleeding. I know that I would bleed easily when I would eat anything that had polysorbate 80 in it. There may be other things in your diet that are affecting your hormones/body. The pill is not the safest way to go, it has no guarantees...I told my husband that I needed more rest (I had 3 in 7 years, in my 30's) and he understood. You need to recuperate....give yourself that private time, for the sake of your marriage, your family and your body! Good luck!

The leaflet is correct. Don't stop taking it. You're older now so it may balance out longer than before. The most important part of taking the pill is taking it at the same time every day. I take mine at bedtime every night. Pick at time that works best for you but take it at the same time every day and ride it out. You doc won't change you until you've tried this for a while. Stick with it. I know it's annoying but do stick it out!

Hi D.,

Stop the pill. Get the "Safes" from your local
grocery store and keep them under your pillow.

Let your body cycle return to normal. Be patient.

Good luck. D.
