Bleeding Again...

I had my baby about a month and it went well. There were a few complications, namely bad bleeding after delivery, and I was given several meds to cause cramping and clotting. I have a history of bleeding problems, placenta accreta with my first baby, so I was monitored very closely while in the hospital. When I was discharged, things looked like they were going smoothly. For the first three weeks, it was pretty routine. A few days ago, I started bleeding again and passing blood clots.

Its not heavy, but its a bit worrying. Until then, the bleeding had just about stopped entirely. I called the hospital where I delivered and was told to restrict my activities again. I haven't done or been doing anything different except walking a little more.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm monitoring everything closely and going nuts staying home every day, but better that than back in the hospital.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called my doctor and was told that it was very likely my period starting back up. When I asked about the fact that it hadn't gone away after a week, I was told that since I am breastfeeding, the hormone that causes lactation was causing things to be irregular.

I do have a follow-up appointment in a week or so, and was told to keep watching it until then. I'm supposed to be watching out for signs of excessive blood loss or heavier bleeding that doesn't stop. Hopefully, I should know more after my appointment.

2nd Up-Date
Umm...Still bleeding and its been 9 weeks since delivering my son. At the previously mentioned appointment, the doctor told me to watch it and call if the bleeding hadn't stopped by Halloween. Since I'm still bleeding, with no signs of slowing, I've got to go in for an ultrasound on Thursday.

3rd Update
Wow...Where to start? Well, during the ultrasound, they found a very large blood clot smack dab in the top portion of my uterus. Its roughly the size of a very large lemon or the average woman's fist. I have to go in for a D&C on Tuesday to have it removed.

With my two boys, I didn't have any bleeding problems, but I bled up until right before my 6 week check up. The clots sound a bit scary, but I think I remember a little bit of that, too. I also remember that it would stop and start again, and the best way to get it to stop was to rest more. I was told that it's the way to gauge if you're doing too much. I was so tired of bleeding that I would rest just to get it to stop! I wouldn't be too worried, but trust your gut.
My friend who's has 5 babies also told me that she's almost canceled her 6 week check ups for all her babies because she hadn't stopped bleeding.

At the very least, call your doctor just to reassure yourself. They may have you come in, but better safe than sorry. I know a friend who still had placenta attached, too, so it's not that uncommon. My mom hemorraged about 2 weeks after having me years ago. There could be something else, too, or it could be normal for you. You don't know that it's normal for you until you rule out any other things. Ease your mind and get your doctor's take. Enjoy your baby! :)

Dear C. - after delivering in Feb I began bleeding more heavily at 3 weeks. My midwife assured me that everything was fine - I believed her and let it go even though I had very heavy bleeding with clots. Turns out I had retained placenta and had to go in for a d and c at 6 weeks. Don't take any chances. Go get an ultrasound - I felt so much better physically after I had the D and C.

YOu probably started your cycle. I also started me cycle 5 weeks after delivering my first baby. I was also breast feeding. I thought something was terribly wrong, but it was confirmed when I started my cycle 4 weeks later.

My first two were very normal, and then I had this problem with my last. The doctors kept telling me I was doing too much, but there were many days where just taking a shower made me start bleeding again, sometimes with clots, and that was with my mom and hubby to care for the kids. It probably wouldn't hurt to run it by the doctor to make sure they aren't concerned, but in my case, they weren't and just told me to do less. Your body may just not be ready for the walking yet. Every pregnancy is different, and so is every recovery. You're right that you don't want to digress, so I'd just take it as easy as you can. With my DD, if finally quit bleeding at about 6 weeks for good. Congratulations on the new one!

If the blood is red, not the brownish color and the clots are good sized - inch or so diameter or bigger - call and go see your dr. About 2 weeks after having my last child I experienced increased bleeding, red blood and golf ball size clots. I called the doc on call and he didn't want to come in to the er to see me. Wanted me to wait til the next morning when he would call in a prescription. Fortunately my husband said this is not normal and took me to the er. The scab that forms in the uterus where the placenta was attached, came off and I was hemorrhaging. If we hadn't caught it soon enough, I may have had to have a hysterectomy. I don't want to scare you, just want you to be cautious.

call your dr and get on a birth control pill that will help with the blood clots. I have been there and it is really hard to stay down when you have other kids. Good luck and be safe your kids are going to need you.

C.,
You should call the OB/GYN who delivered you. I went through something similar. Except that "little bit" of bleeding turned into a hemhorrage which almost killed me. Sorry, I didn't mean for that to sound scary, but sometimes these things can turn bad...and I'd rather have the doctor involved now rather than later. Good luck!

I don't want to scare you, but I had a similar situation when I had my son. I ended up taking an ambulance ride straight into an emergency D & C. And it was EXTENSIVE. Doctor said he'd never done one like it and was shocked I was
a) still alive (from blood loss)
b) not dealing with a raging infection

In other words, don't mess around with this. Even if your doctor/midwife/whomever tells you that the clots aren't big enough, you aren't passing enough blood, or that it's just nothing too worrying to them, INSIST on being checked. Even if that means doppler ultrasound.

Please update us? Good luck!

Hi C. - I'm wondering if you are not just having your period. If the bleeding becomes very heavy or lasts longer than a normal period, by all means schedule and appointment your doctor.

Congratulations on your new baby boy!

Hi. Try some Comfrey leaves soaked in your bath water once a day for a week. Comfrey helps repair torn muscle, Pioneer women used it after every birth. It also helps a ton on other skin and tissue cuts.

That happened to me with both my children's births. It wouldn't hurt to phone your obstetrian's office just to reassure yourself, but you do say the bleeding is not heavy, so it's probably not anything serious and the suggestion to rest a bit more is likely what you will hear again from the doctor's office.

In my case, there wasn't any need for a d&c or anything like that. And the timing was about right for it to be my period beginning again. (Even though I breastfed, I still had regular periods, but not really "normal" ones. They were lighter than usual.)

Congratulations on that fine baby boy - and that 4-year-old girl as well.

I would defintely go in to be checked to be sure. Even if it's so you can sleep better at night (mentally).

Also, I would go to an Internist to see if there's anything natural you can take to hlep with your history of bleeding problems.

Best wishes!

What about your OB or the baby's pediatritian? You could probably speak to them about your fears, and you should be having a follow up check up as well. I bled for 6 weeks with all three of my kids, maybe it wasn't quite finished yet?

I had this same problem. Per my dr, I limited my activities and the bleeding slowed/stopped. So, I thought I was OK. Then, when I tried to take walks (even a slower-paced 1-mile walk), I would start bleeding again. This went on for almost 2 mos post delivery b4 my dr recommended a d&c. After I had the surgery everything was fine. The dr said they found a small piece of placenta still attached to my uterus which was causing the continued bleeding.
