Bladder Problems Post Baby

Hi fellow moms. This is a bit embarrassing and personal, but I need to figure this out. I had a baby almost 11 months ago. Very healthy pregnancy, vaginal delivery, healthy baby, etc. I nursed for 6 months and started to have sex with my husband after a good 3 months. Everything has been fine until about a month ago. During sex (I was on top) I realized that I had peed. I didn't feel the urge to go or did I even realize what was happening until after. I figured I had a full bladder before. Well it has happened 2 more times. Again only when I am on top. This has never happened before. My questions are: is this normal? Will it go back to the way it was before? Do I need to see my doctor? It is really hard to be intimate with my husband when I worry about peeing on him!! He is a wonderful man who doesn't care and loves me no matter what, but it bothers me. Do I need to worry?? Thank you so much for your help.

What can I do next?

I would definitely start doing kegel exercises and if it doesn't get better after a couple of weeks then I would go see a doctor. Hope this helps. :) Best of luck

If it really is the bladder, and not ejaculation, you're lucky it doesn't happen when you sneeze and cough. Many women have loss of bladder control for months after birth, because the pelvic floor muscles are weakened and stretched. The only remedy for this is kegel exercises multiple times a day.

If you have not been doing your Kegal exercises, now is a great time to start. Many women go through this. Your muscles have stretched. Kegals will add strength back. Look it up in a woman's health book, or woman's health website, and you will get specific instructions. Be careful about just doing a random search on Google, though, I would imagine you may come across some smut this way. Good luck!

yes, I would see your Dr. a friend of mine had similar issues and her bladder had "lowered" and leaked at times. That can happen with pregnancys since the babies sit on top of the bladder.

I would call your doctor and ask the nurse if it was normal. Just so you know...after a cough or sneeze I pee a little. I think its normal after a birth. It has decreased over the last year though. Best of luck.

I would mention it to your doctor. But, bladder as well as bowel problems post delivery are normal and common. The more kids you have, the harder it is to hold it. Try Kegal (sp?) exercises. They help. Also, it takes a woman's body a good 2 years to completely recover from having a baby. Most problems will cease within the 1st year. But, the full recovery doesn't happen until 2 years later. So, give it time.

This is totally normal. I never had the problem during sex but I swear if I look in the wrong direction there's a little piddle. The way it was explained to me was that baby smushed your bladder and it no longer sits in it's original place. They told me to do the kegals (which didn't help) I can stop peeing mid stream but any kind of stress and forget about it. The other thing they can do is a bladder suspension. One of two ways to do it. You can have neoprene straps sewn into/around your bladder and stitched to some other part of your body to hold your bladder up. Another way is to put a support harness in that holds your bladder and like the straps gets stitched into other parts of the body. But with both if you have another pregnancy it ruins the surgery. Hope this gives you some insight.

I am curious about the responses you will receive. I am 37 years old and this has happened to me numerous times, and I have not had any children.

Next time you see your Dr. tell him, there may be a simple reason that this is happening. Like the pressure on the bladder or the angle. Sometime's this does happen everything have been moved around and stretched with haveing a baby. Good luck

Hi J.,
I would probably call your OB/GYN because it sounds like you may have a slight bladder prolapse. There are physical therapies they can get you on to help with that. Hope this helps. P.S. this is a very common thing after a vaginal birth. S.

May have to see the doctor for help. But I did hear that when you have children it is harder to control your muscles. What may help to is before you get intimate go to the bathroom first even tho you may not feel like it to avoid a mishap. I am under the impression that you are happy and you husband is doing all the right moves and your body is comfortable so that why your muscles are relaxed but metally you shouldn't have to worry about that happening. Good luck and I wish you all the best.

I think it might be caused by over stimulation and a full bladder. If I were you I would probably do kegal exercises, urinate before sex and maybe choose only one source of stimulation before intercourse. If the combination of that doesnt help then I would mention it to a doctor. In the meantime, buy a waterproof matress protector and layer up your sheets and enjoy being intimate with your husband!

Hi, your right this is definately a difficult subject, I'm a 31 year old mother of 3 and I recently discovered this myself; in actuality what you are experiencing is something referred to as squirting, and it is brought on by the g-spot being stimulated to the highest possibility. To learn more about this research it on the net, I had to and now my husband and I have the most amazing intamacy within our relationship, it actually brought us closer together. I hope this helps, I just researched it through google, and then my husband found a video that dealt with just the G-spot. Good luck!

I was thinking the same thing as Roxanne, that you might be experiencing female ejaculation. It can definitely feel like you have peed because there is so much of it and it gushes out. I know this is a sensitive topic...

Dont worry, my kids are 6 & 8 and I still sometimes tinkle a wee bit if I sneeze really hard! It sure is tough being a woman! LOL.

I just read an article about this in Good Housekeeping. You need to do Keegels for 5 min, twice a day for them to help tighten the muscles around the urethra. The doctor recommended tighten for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts. Also try to practise squeezing during sex. They said it takes several weeks of daily Keegels for the problem to improve. I have a 4 y.o. girl and I can tell you that the first year after she was born the problem was worse than it is now. If you are not sure what a Keegel is, just google Keegel exercises. All the muscles down there get stretched out from vaginal delivery, and this is a common problem. To discover what muscles to work, try to stop your urine flow when you go to the bathroom. However, they recommend this just to figure out how it works, then you can do the exercises anytime, anywhere, any position. It takes time for the muscles to return to normal. Hope this helps.

Hi J.,
Did you deliver your baby vaginally or via c/section? If you delivered your baby vaginally you may have a prolapsed bladder. when you push and push trying to deliver a baby plus your baby's weight that may have caused your bladder to drop. You will be better off going to your Gyn and let him/her examine you.

I noticed that some ladies mention that it may be that you are ejaculating which is possible but what makes me wonder is why does it only happen when you are on top? When a women ejaculates it happens in every position.
Go see your Doctor and this is more common that you may think. I'm not saying you need surgery just jet but they do a corrective surgery were they put everything back in place including the uterus (there is also prolapsed uterus).

Good luck,
Elisa
