I am concerned about all the hype concerning bottles and cups containing Bisphenol- A. I know all about the chemical and its "issues" and am planning on trying new bottles. Has anyone tried the Born Free B-A free bottles? They are about $10 per bottle and I'd like to know if anyone's tried 'em before I plunk down a ton of cash. Babies R Us has them. Thanks!

So What Happened?

I went ahead and bought the Born Free bottles with the variable flow nipple which was a little hard to figure out in the dim light while feeding my son. I think I will use the lower flow nipples to mimic more the flow of my breastfeeding. The bottles work well and my conscience has been eased now. Thank all you mamas for your tips...me and my boy appreciate it!

I only heat up bottles 3-5x a week so I don't worry about it b/c from what I've read up about it, it MAY only be a problem over cumulative times. So if you are formula feeding or frequently pumping and heating, I can see the concern.

My friend loved the DROP-IN system from Avent, and Playtex has it too--the formed plastic made it really easy for her to mix formula and put the bottle together. Easy to prepare, no multiple heatings of plastic bottles, less colic w/collapsable drop-in liner, easy clean up...

Born Free bottles are great. I switched my 8 month old to these bottles a few months ago. We used to use Dr. Brown's. I love them and so does my son--we had no issues at all with the switch and the increased cost is worth the peace of mind in my opinion.

Hi M....I had the same concerns as you, after trying out the Dr. Brown's glass bottles I settled on the Born Free. I like them alot (despite their expensive price tag). Here are my reasons: BPA-free, easy to clean, large sizes (5 & 9 oz.). The only thing is the nipple (0-3mo) has a pretty fast flow, but it doesn't seem to bother my son. The Dr. Brown glass bottles are good too, but I was concerned at how hot the glass gets when I warmed them and the possibility of them breaking when dropped. They are also smaller in size (3.5 & 7 oz). I also have the Dr. Brown plastic bottles and may use them for water or juice only (things that don't need to be warmed) when my son is older.

What I did was use glass baby bottles. They were cheaper than the bottles youre talking about.

And they are also more hygienic cuz they dont get slippery after a go-around in the dishwasher.

I have their sippy cups and really like them. My friend uses their bottles and she has said good things about them.

I haven't used those, but we've liked the Adiri bottle, which is B-A free and not that expensive. I think you can also get evenflo glass bottles at a reasonable price.

I've never used bottles with my kids, so I don't have any personal experience. My friend switched to these bottles and her daughter didn't have any problems. She liked the fact she could buy the sippy top later to use with the bottles. So even though they are expensive up front you will get your moneys worth by using them as sippy cups.

I use Born Free bottles and sippy cups and I love them. If I couldn't afford them I would use glass bottles to avoid Bisphenol -A. Glass is so heavy. One bit of advise, get the Born Free bottle and nipple cleaning kit - we waited like a year and were sorry when we saw how well it worked : )

Hi M., congrats on your little one! I haven't tried Born Free bottles because of their price. I have found these Nuby bottles that are BPA free also. All the reviews complain about the nipples, since some babies don't suck as hard as others. So I just switched out the nipples to Dr Brown's nipples and they work great. My 5 month old uses the stage 2 nipples. The Nuby bottles can be found in store at Babies R Us, so no need to buy them online. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2793365
But just like all the other bottles out there, you need to find out what your baby likes. So maybe try these out and one of the Born Free ones to see what your baby likes before spending a ton on all Born Free. Good Luck!

Hi M., I have tried them a d they are good a better and cheaper option is glass bottles. They also sell them at BRU. That's what I used and they were awesome, clean and safe (just don't drop them, although you can get covers that protect them).

Hi - I am slso a teacher and on leave until April 10 -I have an 11 week old little girl who was 6 weeks premature - we at first had to supplement with formula and now that BF'ing is going well DH gives her a bottle of MM each night - I love the Born Free bottles. Bella has had no problems with nipple confussion. I originally bought the Dr. Brown's and when I placed the bottle in hot water to heat the milk the water surrounding the bottle turned a milky color as if chemicals from the plastic were coming off in the water. When I placed the Born Free bottles in the water the water stayed clear. Also if you buy online at Diapers.com you get $10 off your first order and they have the starter kit there. I just feel better knowing that she might be getting fewer chemicals.

Hello M.,

I purchased MANY baby bottles to later find out I had ruined their integrity and had to throw them ALL out. I used the AVENT bottles and liked them very much but learned they weren't the best in plastics. I then went with Born Free as they resembled the AVENT bottles and my son took to them right away. I am very happy with my decision.

If you don't want to spent the money, which I think they are worth it if you only purchase the 2 pack then I would go with glass bottles for infants. Once they are able to feed themselves a bottle then you need to switch to a plastic bottle.

I also highly recommend the Avent sippy cup as well as the Thermos Foogo sippy canteen.

I use Medela bottles. They're cheaper and also BPA-free plus I don't have to deal with compatibility issues with my Medela breast pump.
Also, see http://www.bisphenol-a.org/ for more recent info on BPA.
Enjoy your new baby!

Why not use glass bottles? Babies R Us has them and they are a lot less than $10/bottle. We used them just fine for both babies. They're a little heavier so baby is less likely to be holding them on their own. Otherwise, they wash wonderfully well and are quite durable.

Dear M.,
I switched from Avent to Born Free because of my concern over bisphenol-A.
Avent has no extra parts other than the bottle, collar, cap and nipple. I kept the Avent nipples because I had read on other reviews that people preferred them with the Born Free bottles. The Born Free bottles come with Bottle, nipple, 2 inserts for helping with colic and gas and the collar and cap. I took out the two parts for colic and gas since my baby was past that point. This poses a problem. the nipples will collapse in on themselves and leak milk if you don't use the extra parts. I switched out the nipples for the AVent nipples and had no problem with collapsing but the nipples do not fit all the way up to the cap, so water, formula, breastmilk will leak out of the bottle and into the cap. You can keep the inserts in the bottle and use the Born Free nipples but then you have 2 extra parts to clean but if you have extra nipples from your previous bottles, then try those in the Born Free bottles. Otherwise, I have no trouble with the Born Free bottles.
I do agree with others that glass is also the way to go but at the time I ordered my plastic bottles, the glass weren't available and they weren't carrying Born Free at Babies R Us

I bought our Born Free bottles at A Mother's Haven in Encino for $20.99 (they have a web store too at www.amothers-haven.com) and I absolutely LOVE them!

My son was breastfed so I left the stage one nipples on so he wouldn't get lazy about nursing. We had no trouble with the nipples collapsing and I also noticed that he had less trouble with spitting up using the Born Free.

They are the only bottles I use. They are awesome and well worth the money! I order them from the bornfree site and they have great service. Might be cheaper than Babies R Us:
