I am trying to figure out what do give a six year old girl for her birthday. She loves to dance, I know that- often described as the 'Princess' of the family (not in a bad way). I want to get her something fun but educational at the same time- Her older sister receved a science experement kit and a book of other experiments from us earlier this month. Also I have a fairly limited budget - need to stay in the twenty dollar range- especially since the drive to see her will take a full tank of gas.

What can I do next?

Look into some of the DK books/kits. They have them at Target, but a better selection at bookstores like Barnes and Noble (in the kids section). They have really fun stuff that she can make and do. There are things like jump rope songs, bracelet making, etc. and I'm sure there is something princessy or dancey! They usually run about $12-18.

I'm not sure if you have the store The Learning Tree near you (I think it's a chain??) but they have super fun educational toys and you can browse around there and find tons of stuff!

My five year old daughter (soon to be 6) LOVES Highlights Magazine. She too is our pretty little princess and loves all the diva drama she can muster up. Her favorite day of the month is when she gets her very own adventure packed magazine in the mail. The articles are always well balanced and provide activities, science experiments, great facts, personal stories, stickers, and all on her level.

If you go to bookstores, like Barnes and Noble or Border's... they always have a "reduced price" books or books on sale.
Some are only like $7.99 or $9.99 books that regularly go for a lot more...
And they also often have really cute "kits" or craft kids or fun kids type kits or activity sets.... or puzzles or notebooks or pencils or bags etc.
Its really cute... my kids love going to Barnes and Nobel and we recently got my daughter's friend a really cute b-day gift from there... for under $20.00

all the best,
Susan

J.,

I would suggest that you check out the thrift stores for costumes and dance outfits. Maybe get some funny hats , purses, high heel shoes, jewelry. Thrift stores can have such treasures if you don't mind being second hand. Or you could go through some of your own stuff and put together a dress up kit for her. Be creative ....do you scapbook? If so make one that all she has to do is place the pictures in it and add some stickers or die cuts that you make.

Have fun no matter what. Six years olds love for others just to give them attention.

Books and craft kits and magazines (we love "Ladybug" magazine, published by Cricket) are always good ideas, but don't forget about music. You could make her a CD of groovy song to dance to. How about a CD and a set of colorful scarves to dance with? My kids (all boys) love doing this. A container of bubbles (espeically the great Bubble Oodles from Gymboree) is a great add-on to any gift, but would go well with a "dance basket" gift.
Audio books are also fun for this age, since they are starting to read independently. I know the book "The Paper Bag Princess" come in a book-with-CD package.
The book "Girls Hold Up This World" is also a beautiful choice.
Lucky girl to have you in her life!
