I've had the Mirina IUD for 8 months now and am still experienceing MAJOR cramping..... feels like labor. Already been to the DR. everything is "fine" with it. This is my 2nd one. First time had MAJOR cramping 2-3 weeks, almost had it taken out but it ended up being the best BC ever for the 5 years. So with this 2nd one I thought I prob wont have cramping or anything. I'm serously thinking of calling the Dr on Mon. and having it taken out. I just can't deal with the pain anymore. My question is, should I ask my husband get a VAS? My only concern is that Ive been on BC's for sooo long I dont know what a "normal" period would be. What if he goes through the VAS and I end up needing to be on BC's anyway? Then I'm thinking maybe just try the pills again first (it's been about 6-7 years since I've been on them)and if I have MAJOR side effects, then do a VAS? Anyone have any suggestions of what pill they are on without any MAJOR side effects or any other BC that is working for them? TIA!

What can I do next?

You've got to try the Nuvaring. You can either choose to keep it in for the 28 day cycle and put a new one in to not have a period or you can take it out after the 3 weeks and have a period. I choose to not have a period and it's been wonderful. Good luck!

I suggest this all the time on here. Go get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Dr. Toni Weschler. This will help you better understand your cycles and you will not need to be on BC. Let your system get back to what it does naturally and then determine if you want to be on the pill again.

If you don't plan on having any more children, I would highly suggest your husband get the vasectomy so you don't have to worry any more. It's a simple procedure and the recovery time is minimal.

Hi Heather,

I work at a women's center and HIGHLY recommend the NuvaRing. I used it myself for 5 years w/o any problems. Took it out 6/07 to try for our first kid and conceived 8/07. Side effects are minimal typically as it is very low dose. The most common side effect, and this can be a good thing or a bad thing depending upon how you look at it, it that for the first 2-3 months, you might have increased vaginal secretions. The hormones will actually last for up to 5 wks per ring. It is recommended that you either leave it in for 3wk and out for 1wk or, as I did, leave it in for 4wk and then replace w/new ring. I hated having periods, so loved not having them very often. Since it has come out, we have only had one patient that I've heard of who became pregnant while using it. It is much more common to become pregnant on depo or pills. Also, one typically cannot feel it during intercourse or if you feel more comfortable, it can be removed for up to 3 hours & you remained protected. Hope this helps.

I had almost debilitating cramping for the entire 9 months Mirena was in. Sex hurt so badly that there was no risk of pregnancy - we only tried twice once it was in, and I was in tears and almost vomiting for a couple of hours after.

My dr's nurse said, "Mirena doesn't cause that". She would not let me schedule an appointment, so I had another doctor pull it out. There was a pus pocket around it, apparently, and an very foul smell when it was removed, and for a couple of days afterward. Less than a month later, I stopped hurting. Two months later, sex was an option. I used Yasmin until we decided to have our last baby - at which time I had a tubal during my c-section.

Had I not been able to combine my tubal with my delivery, I would absolutely have him have a vasectomy. Or try celibacy. His choice.

Heather,
I just got my Mirena removed 2 weeks ago. I had mine for only 6 months. I decided to have it removed for 2 reasons: 1) bad history with BC and PMS - tends to make me a total "B" ha! 2) I was bleeding all the time - my periods were 10-14 days (no fun). I could have lived with the second reason, but I didn't want to waste any more time being irritable, depressed, anxious. Not to say that Mirena is the cause, but I did ask around (actually got a lot of responses from this website) and many women are experiencing some bad side effects from this BC. I bled a lot after having it removed - about 5 days worth of 6 to 8 tampons per day. There was a good deal of clotting. Before having it removed, my gyno told me that most of her patients complain of heavy bleeding after it is removed, but that physiologically, it doesn't make sense. This got me thinking, what did this device do to my body to make it bleed so much? I know this is in no way a very medical/clinical observation, but food for thought.... I say have it removed and work on a better solution for your family. You shouldn't have to suffer for decent BC.
Good Luck

I've never had very much luck with birth control! I had a Mirina IUD for 3 months, I never stopped bleeding and it finally fell out. after several years I have found a pill that works for me with out side affects. I'm on Ortho Tri cyclen LO. it may not be strong enough for everyone though. I'm pretty small (5.2, 115lb).
If you end up getting the IUD out you might try being off BC and using a condom for a while just to see what your periods are like. Personally I can't wait for the day when we are done having kids and my husband can get a vas and I'm done with BC forever!!!! Good luck!

i had some issues w/ BC as well, so DH & i just use condoms -- no probs!
maybe you guys could just use condoms until you get your situation figured out & if you decide to not use a BC, then your DH could get a VAS then?

If you are done with having children, then I would definitely ask your husband to get a vasectomy. Birth control is as much the man's responsibility as the woman's. My husband did and it wasn't that big of deal...even though he acted like it. He said he wouldn't have me do it...too much risk and much longer recovery! A year before I got pregant with our child and then after our child and before his VAS, I didn't use any BC...except no sex days 9 - 16 of my cycle. I was using and am still using a natural progestone cream to help balance my hormones and hopefully help with peri-menopause as it gets closer. I have been on BC pills before using natural progesteron cream (started 7 years ago). I can tell you that before using natural progesterone cream I didn't have a normal regular cycle unless I was on the pill. Once I started using the natural progesterone cream, I had a regular cycle until we got pregnant with our daughter.

After researching different BC pills, I decided it was best for ME to NOT be on them again. I did not like the possible side effects (long term and short term). It's my body, just as yours is yours, and your decision how to take care of it. A great website to do some research is www.johnleemd.com. Dr. John Lee was a pioneer in natural progesterone research. He also has some great books for the lay person to understand. You'll learn so much about your body. It's a good thing to be well informed. If you do choose to try a natural progesterone cream, be careful which on you chose...they are not all alike.

If you'd like more information don't hesitate to contact me at ____@____.com luck!
D. :)

PS...Please know that God intended us as women to have cycles...it is NOT normal or healthy to purposely make your body skip a cycle, let alone several in a row! I pray that you will do your research before using something that will purposely make your body skip cycles.

I love nuvaring. I have even been changing my ring at three weeks for a new one because my periods are now 6 weeks apart.

I can't imagine why your husband wouldn't offer a VAS if you're sure your done w/ kids. It's done on an outpt basic and is barely painful. My husband has researched it extensively because he plans to have one once we are done w/ kids. He understands how BC can effect our hormones and can have long term implications ie. increased risk of cancer. He feels this simple procedure is the least he can do after I gave birth and went thru the pregnancies. There is also the Vas Clip if your husband fears the vas deferens being severed. I know some men are weird about it but I would at least ask and ask him to do some research. You may be surprised by his answer and find he had already thought of it.

I second the Nuva Ring....I love the thing....I don't have to worry about my stupid monthly debilitating migraines because of my cycle, I can skip multiple ones, just change the ring every 28 days. I have had issues with BC for a couple of years, some are too strong, some are not strong enough, etc., and my doc put me on the ring and even when I take it out to flush my system (I had hyperplasia (thickening of the uterus lining) so bad before I tried getting pregnant with my son, had a biopsy in my uterus (UGH!) and it the lining was so think doc said it could become cancerous within the next month if I didn't do something now because I have Polycystic Ovaries - which does not allow your body to have normal cycles, it makes your body think you are pregnant so you don't have one for years at a time, if you don't know what is going on like me) so I am a little paranoid with it now so I take my ring out periodically, but even when I take it out, I don't have nearly as bad cramps as I did on regular pills (or even when I did have a surprise period on my own). The migraines are almost nonexistant now too. I hope this info helps and I hope you can get things worked out!

You might want to try the Nuva Ring. You insert it for the 30 day cycle and then take it out and put in another one. You don't deal with taking pills daily, you don't feel it once inserted, and it doesn't interfere with sex. I loved it!
