I am currently using the Depo shot as my method of birth control. I would like to start planning a pregnancy. I have heard many stories such as, it takes a year to get pregnant, it is healthy to be off of the shot before trying and so on. Has anyone used the shot and had trouble getting pregnant? How long did it take? Any info would be great. Thanks B.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your responses. They were helpful and a little scary..lol..Everyone's body is different. At least I have a better idea as to how long or how quickly I can become pregnant. Thanks again, B.

It took me almost a year and a half to get pregnant, but I had been on the depo shot for about 5 years. Seems like the longer you're on it, the longer it takes to get back to normal....but everyones body is different! :)

It took one year after my last shot to get pregnant. It actually took from January until September to even get my period back.January 06 was my last shot. Got pregnant Jan 07 and had healthy baby boy October 07. Good luck to you.

anytime you go off of any birth control method you can get pregnant. It is as simple as that. Some people are quicker than others so you never know. It depends on your body but I would use another form of birth control like a condom if you are not ready right away to avoid that quick pregnancy that you could have. Most physicians would suggest waiting a couple of months so that your body can adjust hormonally. Good luck with having your family

Both times I was on the Depo shot and went to get pregnant it took about a year - I can't say if this was just me, but I have heard this is about "the norm". I wasn't in a huryy, so it didn't bother me.

It took me 1 year. Everyone is different, but I think the norm is 6 months to a year.

I had my last shot in Oct of last year. Knowing I wanted to get pregnant
I got my period in jan. And not again they told me it would be up to a year
Before I was regular again. Well I got prego and did not find out I was until
I was 17 weeks. So just be careful. And take care of yourself.

When I was 19 I had been on depo for a little over 3 years. I missed my yearly exam so they wouldnt give me my shot. They told me since I used it for so long I should be fine but to use back up. Well I had my exam and they said when you start your period come in for your shot. Well I never had a period, I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. I just thought I would tell you my depo story. Good luck!

With my first, my shot ran out in Jan and I was pregnant by May!! I was going with the "it can take up to a yr or more" LOL Yeah right for me, Zabrina wasn't planned but I wouldn't change it for the world!! As for my 2nd daughter, Addison, It took about 6-8 mths after I stopped to get pregnant! The norm for most seems to be a yr though, I guess Im not normal!! LOL

Keep in mind, everyone reacts to things differently. But personally for me, I was on Depo for 3 years. After my last shot, it took almost exactly one year to get pregnant.

Hi Bonnie,

I took the Depo shot after my first child was born....I stopped taking it and was pregnant rather quickly. Unfortunately, I miscarried, and the OB/GYN attributed it to 'hormonal imbalance' because i'd gotten pregnant too soon after the depo. He said he recommended switching to condom/other use for about 2-3 months after stopping depo (a full depo cycle) before trying. I hope this helps.

I used the Depo shot for about 5+years. I went off the shot in January and began my cycle again in about August/September. I was pregnant by Christmas time. Good luck and congrats!

I've always heard to wait 3 months until you start trying. Use a back up til then. It will give your body some recovery time. Everyone is different so please discuss w/ your OB/GYN!

A good friend of mine had been on depo for almost 10 years when she decided to get pregnant. Her periods began after 5 months, but it took almost a year for her cycles to become normal. It took about 2 years to get pregnant. After talking to her husband, it sounds like she really went through some bad times adjusting to being off the shot. There were mood swings (mostly depression, some anger) and her periods were heavy. Also cramps were bad, however she said they got better with time.

She does not think they had trouble getting pregnant even though it took so long. My friend and her husband are in good health and realised that what the shots did took a while to undo. Everyone is different. Hopefully you conceive you soon! Best of luck.

I was on Depo for about a year and a half. i was pregnant with my son 9 months after my last shot. It took a while for my body to get back to a regular cycle and I did have one miscarriage during that time. I would definitely wait for your cycle to return to normal before trying to conceive.
