Birth Control Advice - Fox River Grove,IL

I was supposed to get my tubes tied when I delivered our son on 8/14, but due to pre-eclampsia and a low platelette count in my blood, my OB/GYN didn't want to do the procedure. I've been looking at other birth control methods aside from the pill - which I've been on forever.

Does anyone use an IUD? Which one? I'm looking at the pros and cons to using one. Any bad experiences?

To be honest, we don't want any more children...but since it seems fate intervened with me getting my tubes tied, I wonder if it's a sign to NOT do something so permanent. Who knows? Just looking into some options.

Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Nevermind...I just found a recent post asking a very similar question. I will talk to my OB/GYN at my 6 week post-partum check up. Thanks.

I've been using the Mirena IUD for the past 2 1/2 years and I absolutely love it. I don't have to worry about a pill every day.....I rarely bet a period and if I do, it's nothing but spotting that maybe lasts for a day. I knew I didn't want any more kids, but wasn't quite ready to make it permenant.

I've four children and my husband and I are through. My initial thought was to get my tubes tied but there was so much scarring that my dr. was unable to perform the procedure. Which turned out to be a blessing since I'm reading about hormone therapy that most women end up needing due to the ligation. My husband stepped up to the plate and got a vasectomy last Thurs. He's fine with it, and it was a simple fifteen minute procedure. Why is it that we woman always seem to take on the load when it comes to the "big decesion". You've put your body through enough-it's HIS turn. Good luck. If you need the name of a dr. in Arlington Heights let me know.

I just wanted to weigh in and let you know that I had the Paragard IUD and had a miserable time. At the outset I told myself I would give it a years time to see how I felt about that choice.

I had the most horrible periods ever in my life-heavy bleeding and clotting every month. In addition I experienced bloating, dry mouth, dry eyes, irritability.

I finally had it removed 13 mths after insertion. I am back on the pill and still determining what will be our next course of action.

My husband was all set to get a vasectomy but heard some negative comments from other men so we opted against that.

It's a tough decision but wanted to share the other side of the IUD. Remember everyone is different and this is the copper IUD that I had such horrible experience with.

My sister has the Mirena IUD and LOVES it! Very little to no period every month is her experience with her monthly cycle.

Everyone is different. Hope you are happy with your choice.

Take care,
F.

I don't have bc advice, but a vasectamy advice. (did I spell that right?) Anyway, it's a fast and easy procedure on the hubby. He can go in on a Friday, ice it 100% for the first 24 hours and he's back to work on Monday. I talked to my OB and our (mine & Hubby) family practioner about it and they all agreed that it was the easiest way to go. Less invasive for the guys than the women, etc. They only said to do it if we knew we were done and we were. I did tell my hubby that he had to be sure he was done. In case anything ever happened to me, would he want more with a future wife, etc. Cause if he did, then I wouldn't have asked him to do it. But I know I am done no matter what. So needless to say, he went in and I know that's been the answer for many. I figured if I didn't have a c-section with our second and didn't have my tubes tied than it was the least he could do since I carried our 2 children 9 months! :)

Good luck

I use Natural Family Planning and my husband and I swear by it! Once you learn it and follow it it is very effective(despite the many myths). And what woman couldn't stand to know more about what their body is doing anyway? I highly recommend it!

Good luck!

I have the mirena IUD and I love it!. I have no complaints except that the process of getting it in is very uncomfortable, but two hours of pain and discomfort were worth it in comparison to the big picture. My hair would fall out in the first month that I had it in.(It did that when I was pregnant too.) Then my body adapted and it no longer falls out.

I have the Mirena IUD. It lasts for 5 years and I just got it in May. It's been great so far. They just insert it at a regular office visit. I've not had any bad experiences with it yet, however I've only had it a short time. It does make you spot for a while off and on, I still do sometimes, which is normal. When you get it put in you do bleed like you have your period and you're pretty crampy too, but that only lasts several days. I have actually not had my period since, my dr told me that it can shorten the length of your periods and sometimes you won't get it at all, she said it was safe.
Hope this helps!

Good Morning T.,

I am a IUD user and I enjoy the benefits of not worrying about pregnancy. As with you I was faced with the same choices in birth control because of a lack of desire to have another child. However, I was not ready to omit the idea from my head so I used an IUD which is close as permanent.

For me personally, I did not make it personal because I had a 1% doubt. Make a choice that is beneficial to you and no one else. You have to deal with the decision for the remaining of your life.

I hope this helps a little.

Hello T.:)....I have 3 kids...the youngest is 4 1/2 years old and haven't used birth control in a looong time but I would reccommend using what I have used in the past to any woman...it's the 'Norplant'....it contains 6 small sticks that are inserted in the upper arm and is good for 5 years!!...amazing!....I will be getting them inserted as soon as I get the time to do so....the biggest side effect I've read is the changes in menstrual bleeding...so,that is my advice...good luck and have a great day!

Hello T., Congrats on your new addition. I have been on the IUD (Merina,I know I spelled it wrong)for the 13 months and I have not had any problems. I have had only 3 periods while on it. It is place for 5 years and after that the dr. will take it out and place a new one if I so desire. Like I said before I have not had any bad side effects from being on it.

Good luck.
