Can you have the Mirena IUD and be taking the pill at the same time? I ask because I have been on the pill since high school for acne but recently decided to get Mirena put in. Since I have gone off the pill my acne is back and terrible. I can't stand having acne at my age and was hoping to be able to go back on the pill, but I don't want to take out the IUD. Does anyone know if this is ok or bad to double up the hormomes? Any info will help!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

My doctor put me on birth control pills for a benign ovarian cyst while I'm on the Mirena. The pills are to help shrink the size of the cyst. I haven't noticed a change in hormones with both types of birth control working together.

Good luck! I've had Mirena for 3 1/2 years and it is awesome!

A., I had the Mirena IUD put in back in September. I had a period in October and that is the last one that I have had. My face broke out really bad so I started using Proactiv and started to see improvement. I used one month of Proactiv and now I have started using Acne Free brand and my face is clear. Give it a few months. As painful as it was to put in, I am not having it removed for 5 years!! Then it's my husband's problem!! Anyway, you should not double up on birth control (IUD + Oral contraceptive) unless directed by your doctor. Ask him/her what their opinion is and ask what to do about the acne if OTC treatment doesn't help. Hope this helps!!

Your OB/GYN should be the best person to determine this for you. My understanding is that Mirena is also a hormone-based birth control as are birth control pills. There's been some conflicting information in recent years about the risks of hormone replacement (mostly in perimenopausal women), so I'd really find out from your OB/GYN what the data shows.

As someone with adult, cystic acne, I know how much it stinks. You can also take certain anti-biotics for acne (doxycycleine, Septra, Keflex, etc). In my case, I found that using a good cleanser (I personally like Keihl's) and practively using benzyl peroxide helps (but doesn't eliminate it all together). I thought Benzaclin was great, but I discontinued it for my first pregnancy and have chosen not to go back.

Good luck.

Here's a link to the site for Mirena (this is the clinical data the FDA has approved the product for) to help you understand if the product can/should be used with birth control pills.http://berlex.bayerhealthcare.com/html/products/pi/Mirena...

Have you considered seeing a dermatologist for your acne issues? There are other ways to take care of the acne and it might be better for your health to go that route rather than two forms of birth control. I use a topical medication for acne that works great. It might be worth looking into for you. ~

I agree with another poster using two birth controls is not the right way to go. I would talk to a dr first as you may have an underlying skin problem. also drink plenty of water to flush out your system that will help with the acne.stress and a poor diet can also lead to bad acne.My daughter was put on BC pills for her period being irregular and she had severe acne (so did my son)The dr gave both of them these facial pads-clindamycin phosphate pledgets(looks like stridex pads) for acne and they work wonders although it takes about 2 months for the pads to work once they start they are great my daughter has hardly any acne at all. And for the woman who has the ovarian cysts Did you know that the mirena can cause them? my friend was on it and she had NO problems with cysts and once she had the mirena put in she started having them really badly to where she went to the ER because she thought something had ruptured she was in such bad pain. the told her she had a cyst and the mirena was the cause .Since she has had it out she has had NO cysts at all.Back to the subject doubling up on BC can be harmful as you are getting more hormones than you actually need(hormones are regulated by the pituitary glands as well as the thyroid-people with thyroid problems usually have hormonal imbalances) and disrupting these with too many hormones can cause problems for you in the long run so ask the Dr and see if they can give you the facial pads I mentioned above as they do work(you use them after you wash your face) and you would be free from extra hormones that way.my kids tried all kinds of over the counter products and so far the prescription pads work the best. Hope this info helps

Hi A.,

You don't want to double up on hormones....Acne can be caused by a number of stimuli but the overall reason for acne is the body is not getting the nutrition it needs to be healthy. Even if you are eating the "right" foods you may not be getting any nutrition because the nutrition has been depleted or it has chemicals added to it so the nutrition won't absorb. Pesticides, preservatives, antibiotics, hormones, processing of all kind can poison you and acne, as well as other conditions, begin to exist. The birth control pills did not heel your acne, they only kept it at bay.

An absorbable multivitamin, a good skin regimen, chiropractic care and good food and exercise is a good start. If you would like any ideas concerning any of these things, I'm an open book.

I had a Mirena IUD for a few months last year, and ended up taking it out b/c of all the side effects I had from it, including acne. Even though my doc said the hormone level was VERY low, and he didn't know of many women that had side effects, I was one of them. Not only did I have side effects, but I had a lot of them. Including, migraine headaches, constipation, low sex drive, weight gain, nausea, acne, and fatigue. None of which I would have taken the thing out for by itself, but all together it just wasn't worth it. Not to mention one of the migraines that I had presented as stroke symptoms that put me in the ER and eventually in the hospital for 3 days!! Scary. Anyway, I would not mess around when it comes to hormones in your body. You might be able to tolerate it, but I wouldn't even think about it without advice from a doctor. I'd say if you like the Mirena, see a dermatologist, and let them give you something non-hormonal for the acne.

I don't know much about the combo birth control, but I can tell you that I've spent plenty of money on face wash and moistuizer, trying to find the right one for me. Best thing I've found is acne.org -- It's a .org, so not for profit. I buy a huge bottle of face wash for $10 or $12 plus s&h. It lasts me about 4 months. The website has videos to teach you the best way to wash your face, dry your face, plus there's blogs to get help from others like you.

Good luck.

I don't know about taking the pill with Mirena, but it sounds like a no-no. I can tell you for sure that Mirena can cause terrible acne (bad enough to leave scaring!) as well as other horrible side effects (migraines, hair loss, significant weight gain, etc.). Unfortunately, I learned the hard way about Mirena's side effects. I had one put in on 12/31/09 & from day 1 had terrible pains & severe depression/mood swings & migraines, as well as acne (although not as bad as most people get while on Mirena). I took mine out myself after discovering a website about the true side effects that the doctors & manufacturer's pamphlets don't tell us about. Here is the website: http://www.medications.com/se/mirena and if you've had it in for a long time, when it is removed you can most likely look forward to something called "The Mirena Crash". I guess it's the withdrawal symptoms. Here is the website that I found about that: http://www.everythingmom.com/our-blog/mirena-crash-the-mi.... Of course had I known this information beforehand, I would NEVER have agreed to let my doctor insert it. I had it for about 42 days & it was the worst 42 days of my life! I was feeling better by the next morning after I took it out. I have managed to convince 2 people to not get it. My advice to you would be to get it taken out & go back on the pill. I think that there will almost certainly end up being a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of Mirena. I hear Yaz is good for acne but it has some bad side effects too. Good luck!

I think that would be too much but check with your doctor. IF you see a dermatologist they may be able to give you something else for your acne that would be safe with the IUD.

If you are taking the pill, you need to have the IUD removed. It is NOT OK to double up on hormones.

As far as thinking the pill is going to help with the acne, I'm not sure that will be true now. The IUD you have selected has some of the same hormones and you are still getting the acne. You probably need to go to a dermatologist and have them determine a better solution.
