I am currently pregnant with my second baby but I am looking into birth control options after I have the baby. My husband and I do not want any more kids so I wanted to get my tubes tied but I will be delivering at St Josephs Womens Hospital and since it is a catholic hospital they do not allow them unless the patient is having a c-section.
I have been on the pill for many years but I was interested in a more long term solution but I am worried about side effects. I have always had light periods and I never have any cramping so I do not want that to change. I have looked into Mirena, (but I am not sure about the string part of that) and a friend mentioned Paragard but she does have some of those side effects.
I would just like to get some advice from other women who have tried some of the long term birth control options.

I have had Mirena since my 2nd was born- 3.5 yrs ago. I love it- no side effects and I never get a period. It also only cost me a copay for the Dr visit.
I did the copper IUD and love it. It was a little rough the first few months with cramping and heavy periods but now my body has adjusted to it and I have pretty much my normal period.. maybe a little longer than before. It was like having bad cramps getting it inserted and I cramped up for a few days afterward (nothing that a Tylenol couldn't handle) and I do notice that I will slightly spot (barely noticeable) during ovulation, but other than that it's perfect. I love not dealing with hormones anymore. I really disliked what hormones did to me.
My youngest sibling is a post vasectamy baby.
I am on my second Mirena and I love it. Some cramping when it was inserted this time , first time almost none, it was right after the birth of my second, and this time it wasn't after child birth so things were alot smaller.I have no period , still have some PMS symptoms but don't bleed. What questions do you have about the string?
You can't feel it in you and your husband won't feel it either.
I had my doctor put me on Mirena following the birth of my daughter since I will eventually want another baby but not any time soon. So far it has been fine, very few side effects. If you're worried about the string, don't be. You won't be able to feel it, and your doctor can trim it so that your husband won't be able to feel it either. Insertion was easy, too, no worse than a pap smear. If you prefer the surgical route, I would have your husband get a vasectomy rather than get the surgery yourself since it is much less invasive and easier to reverse if you change your mind.
There are now 2 ways to get your tubes tied. There is a new less invasive in office procedure that can be done without putting you under. Probably similar to a vasectamy. It could be done at your doctors once you have healed. I am waiting for that procedure to be done. I don't want to take the pill anymore due to side affects and I don't want anything in my body either. My sister had her tubes tied and it lessened her period time and pain.

Well I became pregnant on Mirena after a car accident and miscarried, Hubby will be getting a vasectomy after the birth of our next child.
My husband had a vasectomy. I don't remember the dr.'s name, but he has billboards along I-275/75 - heading north out of Tampa. Kindof "cheesy", I know, but he has a contract with all health departments in FL and is VERY good. He's done thousands and only had 3 not work. Also, my husband said it wasn't bad at all compared to other people he heard from. You do have to be sure they get tested afterwards to be sure there are no leftovers hanging around. His office is near University Community Hospital. Good Luck - that's my vote because there are no worries about how it affects your hormones or anything and NOTHING to remember!
Hubby is getting a vasectomy here, too! However, if I had to do it myself, I might consider essure.
We did all the research and came to the conclusion that it was my husband's turn to take charge of birth control for once. He went to get a vasectomy. It was a relatively simple procedure and he recovered quickly. I would recommend it highly. ;-)
There have been some conflicting scientific studies lately regarding the safety of various female birth control options because of the added levels of hormones and risks for issues such as breast cancer.
Your OB/GYN should be very aware of these studies and should be candid with you about the risks of products such as Mirena. Honestly, if neither you nor your husband want more children, I'd also recommend the vasectomy route - there are few complications (though I know the 1 in 100 who had a bad experience), quick healing time, and 99% effectiveness.
