My husband and I are pretty sure we are done with children after the birth of our next baby this summer, but I hesitate to make a "permanent" decision for either myself or my husband (surgical sterilization). I'm considering and IUD (probably copper since I'll be breast feeding) and wanted to know what other mothers have chosen. I was on the mini-pill after my first but that proved insufficient to post-pone pregnancy (baby number two came along anyway) and there doesn't seem to be very many options for breast feeding moms.
I've had the Mirena for over 5 years now and recommend it - it was tough at 1st as I had very heavy periods and a bit of cramping but that went away after the 1st year or so.
BTW why a woman would call birth control "a waste of money, doesnt work and generally is immoral unless you have good reasons for it" really should educate themselves.

Yup I felt the same as you after my 2nd child, so I got the copper iud paraguard. Well shortly after my son turned 1year old I found out I was pregnant. The next day the iud FELL OUT! I now have a healthy and wonderful 2 year old who I sometimes refer to as my iud baby. I would not change a thing though. My dr says that getting pregnant w an iud is rare though and i am the only patient of his that has ever done it and he has been a obgyn for a long time. But I guess there is only 1 thing that is 100%. Sorry make that 2 things I had a hysterectomy in may. After my last baby i got a tubal and right away started bleeding. Dr tried different procedures to get me to stop but i kept bleeding. Finally we decided on a hysterectomy. Best decision!
may i ask why you would want to get on birth control? its a waste of money, doesnt work and generally is immoral unless you have good reasons for it. does your husband even know of this?
they're like sugar pills anyway. if you want to avoid pregnancy, there are other more effective ways to do it.

We used condoms and family planning until we made the decision for my husband to have a vasectomy. I didn't want to take the pill anymore and a friend's mom had a emergency issue with the IUD, so charting my cycle & temp with the condoms was the option available to us.

I received the shot after my son was born and was able to breastfeed. It works, but I got off it because I didn't like the idea of a medicine stopping my periods for 3 months...I know they say there's no medical need for periods...but I thought something was wrong for medicine to stop it...just my opinion. It worked though. Otherwise, I've stuck with Nuva ring and i LOVE that.
I love my mirena (I am on year three now). I got it inserted 8 weeks post partum and breastfed for 19 months - no issues at all.
I have no side effects (i used to HATE being on the pill) and LOVE not having to think about taking something every day.
Personally I feel surgical birth control to invasive, we don't have any more kids planned, so I plan on staying on mirena until I hit menopause.

I chose the Paraguard which is the cooper IUD. I have been nothing but pleased! I had one put in after my first child, took it out to have my second which happened very quickly and then put it right back in after having my second. It is so nice because you don't have all the bloating and other side effects caused by other birth controls. Plus, you can keep it in for 10 years at a nice.
We too were thinking about going permanent but that just seemed like too big of a decision to make right now.
Mirena doesn't contain estrogen, which is what is responsible for decreasing milk supply. I'm considering getting it after my second is born in a few weeks and I plan to breastfeed. Anyway, it is the same hormones as the mini-pill, so safe for nursing moms, as long as they are started after the 6th-8th week postpartum, according to my OB. Norplant and the Depo shot also don't contain estrogen, if you are interested in either of those.
The Mirena is an option. I've had it twice, well on my second one right now, and I like it a lot! The first few months a little wacky but after that my periods got less and less and I basically don't have one now at all...it rocks.
I just had my first and had Mirena put in, and I love it! My doc explained that the hormones in Mirena are concentrated to the uterus so it doesn't interfere with breastfeeding. We haven't had any problems with breastfeeding since it was put in. There was a little bleeding for 3ish weeks but now the bleeding has stopped and I don't have any of the side effects that I used to get with the pill. Mirena is good for up to five years so it can give you guys some time to decide what's right for you.
I just got my copper iud and love it.....i just have thoughts sometimes that tell me i am going to be in the percent that get pregnant with or without birth control. Hopefully my mind will start trusting the birth control i have chosen. we do want to get my husband a vasectomy. I don't want any more kids, but i am afraid 10 years down the road, i will regret it, when the house is quiet and all the kids are gone to school.
I had an iud. Copper and loved it. No babies the 8 years i had it in. Trying for number three and when that happens i am getting one back in. That will cover me though menopause.
