Birth Control - Carthage,MO

I have a dilemma in whether or not it would be best to go off my birth control. I was originally placed on it due to extremely heavy periods and severe cramping 10 years ago. I had actually been hospitalized with a severely infected cyst on my ovary. Well, after 2 kids I changed from Ortho cept to Sprintec(ortho cyclen)in hopes of saving money ( cept is $24, cyclen $9). Well, I have had spotting in between periods ever since. I had this problem when I was breastfeeding my daughter. I was on a progestine only pill and the last 2 months of breastfeeding had a period for 2 months straight. I talked to my husband about stopping the pill just to see if I can now have a normal period without severe cramping and we are both in agreement about it, but still worried. He had a vasectomy after our daughter was born so we wouldn't have to worry about becoming pregnant. Has anyone experienced this before and is there anything that one can take besides birth control to help with the cramping and cysts? Thank you in advance for any responses.

What can I do next?

Most women experience so kind of change in their period after having a baby. If you do not like the birth control you are on, then talk to your doctor about something different. There are all kinds of options out there and since more babies is not really an option, you could even go with something more long term that would possibly get rid of the period all together. Personally, I would go ahead and try without the birth control for a while and see how you do. Give it about 6 months so that you body can regulate itself naturally for a little bit and then if you are still having problems, talk to your doctor about something different. The birth control that you are on now could be causing your problems, not helping them so get to the bottom of the problem instead of just covering it up.

HI J.,
I have had the heavy period problem, but never had cysts on my ovaries. I have Mirena the IUD. I have no periods at all with it and it has been in for 4 1/2 years. It has to be replaced after 5 years. It has been absolutely wonderful. You can learn more about it at www.mirena.com you could also ask your Doctor if it is a good choice for your situation. I don't get any cramping either. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Have you thought about seeing a doctor that will use hormone therapy that is not birth control? Since you don't need it, maybe they could test your hormone levels (not on the pill) and give you what you need and get you back to normal. Just a thought. I did some hormone therapy, and it helped me so much (but for different reasons).

Since you no longer need your ovaries and are having problems with your cycles, why not just go ahead and have a a hysterectomy? If it is medically necessary, in which your case it is, there are free insurances out there (such as Medicaid) that WILL pay it in full.... if money is the issue. You do not want to go forever on birth control. You are no longer in need of your ovaries since your husband had a vasectomy. Having your tubes taken out will delete the risk of ovarian cancer, not to mention lowers your risk for blood clots and strokes due to taking birth control.

Everyone seems to be gung ho for birth control on these answers. I do not believe in taking medication you do not need! Birth control can and will harm your system in the long run. And for those taking it and both partners are still able to have children, birth control can also cause you to have a forced abortion without you even knowing you were pregnant in the first place. Look it up, the research is there. Even my doctor told me there was that risk. There are plenty of natural methods. Watch the calander. Get the cycle beads. Use a condom.

But J., your case is different. You do not need these drugs. They will harm you. Get your tubes taken out. It will benefit your health and make you feel sooo much better!
Talk to you doctor and see what he/she says.

Hope this helps in any way!

Stephanie

I had very irregular periods and a friend recommended Evening Primrose Oil caplets. She took 2 caplets everyday and had a perfect 28 day cycle for years, with little cramping except during ovulation and fairly regular flow. I tried it and was amazed at how regular my periods became. I'm pretty sure that the herbal recommendation below would include EP Oil in their blends. It's also fairly cheap - about the same or cheaper as birth control.

HI! I have a similar story to you. After taking the prog. only pill during breastfeeding I switched to sprintec. I have had spotting ever since starting the birthcontrol. I called my dr. and she said I can double up on the pills until the bleeding stops and then go back to one daily. Right as I was about to try this the spotting got much better. You might ask you dr. but you probably can double up. Do you have pcos? That is what I have and the pill seems to help the symptoms. Hope you get to feeling better!

Hey J.,

It sounds to me like they just need to switch your birth control to something else. I had the same problem after having my son and it took them trying a couple different kinds of birth control before they got me on the right one. So I would just talk with your doctor and see if there is something else that has a generic that they can try, unless you are just wanting to get off of the pill. If you are just wanting to get off then I would say just give it a shot sometimes after being on birth control for awhile you periods change and maybe you won't have to have anything. Good luck!!!
