I am breastfeeding (pumping mainly) and was told that I am going to get my period soon. I do not want to use the pill or the mini pill. Does anyone have suggestions?

What can I do next?

hi J.,2 tumbs up for breast feeding your son.....most people don't get their period while breast feeding, however this dose not mean that you can't get pregnant.....so you should use some type of birth control......your choices beside mini pill are.....IUD / IMPLANON / DMPA injection....please ask your provider regarding possible side effects or advantages of these BCMs.you are well-come to contact me for more info........good luck.

Breasetfeeding is not birth control. You can get pregnant even if you do not have your period.
If do not want to have another baby yet then yes you need to go on the pill or use condoms (which you should be using right now). I did not get my period for a year after the birth of my son. Breastfeeding makes your period unpredictably- but you still release eggs, so you can still get pregnant. Before you chose any birth control get a pregnancy test- Today.

Ah yes! You CAN get pregnant before you ever get your period back while breastfeeding!!! I can't believe your OB/GYN did not tell you! Also, there is no set time that your period stays away while you breastfeed. I breastfed my first for 15 months. Got it back sporadically around a year into it and it was very light.
I use the copper (no hormone) IUD and love it, but be forewarned, if you used to have heavy or crampy periods they will likely be heavier and crampier with an IUD. Otherwise, it is the perfect birth control in my opinion.
Good luck with that and congratulations on the birth of your son! :)

I was there-and I got pregos twice!! On the condom. We started to use the condom, pill, and sponge until he finally got operated. The mini pill isn't really strong at all, because I got pregos on just that and condoms have too many steps-finding it, opening the darn thing to having to put it on and hopefully finding it afterwards but it is cleaner. I hate to say this, but you'll probably get pregnant again if you don't use something because breastfeeding is not a birthcontrol. You'll get your period once the baby starts solids.

How do they know you'll get your period soon? I've been breastfeeding for 9 months and have still not gotten it. I've heard the mini pill can lower your milk supply. I think the only truly safe bc methods while breastfeeding are condoms, diaphrams and the copper IUD. My preferred method is abstinence...LOL!

And YES you can get pregnant while breastfeeding even if you have not gotten your period yet. So be careful now!

Hi, J..

My daughter was born last year, July 24th!

I breastfed and pumped. My period came back four months after delivery.

There's no way to know if you will be one of the lucky ones that doesn't have their period come back immediately. Hopefully, it won't come back for longer than four months.

Are you dreading the idea of having a period? The only reason you would go on the pill is if you're concerned about getting pregnant so soon after having your first.

Bottomline is that you can't be sure when you're going to start ovulating again. If you're concerned about getting pregnant again, you should go on the minipill or one that your doctor can recommend if you want to continue nursing without worries of getting pregnant.

I don't know if that answered your question, but I hope I was helpful.

Good luck!

E.
