Birth Control - West Chester,PA

Hello! I gave birth to our second daughter a little over 2 months ago and am currently nursing her. We got pregnant this time shortly after weaning my first daughter because of faulty birth control practices (I did not switch from the "mini-pill" in time). I have learned from my past that I am extremely fertile, my friends joke that all you have to do is look at me funny and I get pregnant. My husband and I are not sure if we want to have more children, but right now we do not have enough room for another, so we need effective birth control. I know that I have problems remembering to take pills, so the pill is out as an option. I got pregnant with our first daughter while using the NuvaRing, so that option is out. Right now I am getting injections of Depo Provera and am due for my next injection next week. The problem with this is that I have rediculous break-through bleeding. I have ruined so many clothes and am so frustrated with this, as it is very unpredictable.
To the point: Does anyone out there use another form of birth control that they recommend? I was considering Merena, but am wary of putting a foreign object in my uterus because I might want to have another child and am scared that it might injur me. ANY advice would be helpful and much appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I too had the same problem. 9 months after my daughter was born i was pregnant again. When my son was born (4 and 1/2 years ago) i got the Mirena IUD. I love it and have had no problems with it myself. I do not have a period i get occasional bleeding) less than a pantyliner every 6 or so months. I have to get mine removed in march and am debating on whether i want to get it back in or if i want another child. If we are done i am definately getting it back in.

T., GET MIRENA! Especially if your insurance covers it! It has been said that it can make you uncomfortable when you get it inserted but I did not have that problem. The months after you get it kinda stink but worth 5 years with no worries! The Mirena works by shedding the lining of your uterus-Just like your monthly cycle so be prepared for a few months of "the last day" type period. Despite this yucky side affect, it was SOOOO worth it! You can also have it removed in 1 year, 3 years, etc...with just a little visit to the gyn. IUDs are not like they used to be and are very very very safe. I have not met anyone that didn't fall head of heals for this birth control! And just so you know...Most women do not get a period while they have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps!
Another fertile mom of 3, A.

When I was in your shoes...I too am super fertile...I used the ortho evra patch. I stuck it to my butt once per week and then just forgot about it until the next week. It stays on great and works very well. As I approached 40, we went ahead and did the vasectomy thing but I really liked the patch!

I just stopped my Depo shots because I used it for too long. But I loved it. Eventually your periods stop completely. If you give it one more time you may learn to like it. I just started using the ring. You got pregnant while on it scares me, I may be looking for other options. Good luck.

Hi T.,
I was a little wary about using an IUD, but I really loved it. It was a weird (but not painful) having it put in, but then I never thought about birth control once for the next year I used it. I did have slightly heavier periods, but it wasn't at all bad like I thought it would be. I ended up getting the Paraguard instead of the Mirena because, after years on the pill, I wanted to stop taking hormones, and it was cheaper (my insurance wouldn't pay for an IUD). An IUD is a little intimidating, but it was the easiest birth control I've ever used. Really, I won't go back to any other form of birth control.
Good luck!

Hi T.,

I have a question rather than advice. What do you mean by "I didn't switch from the mini-pill in time?" I'm on that now...

Hey T.,

I'm with Amber.....GET THE MIRENA!! I absolutely love it! I was a little weary of it after reading some horror stories on the internet. My doctor said that when women have problems with it, it's because their doctors have placed it incorrectly. I decided to just try it, and when my son was 8 weeks old I had it put in. I could definitely feel it at first (slightly uncomfortable). And there was a constant spotting (for me) for the first 2 months or so. I stuck it out and I am so happy I did. You don't ever have to think about birth control! And now, periods are few and far between and VERY light. I only got the 5 year one, but you can also get the 10 year, and you can have it removed at any time if you decide you want another baby. It's low-dose, so it shouldn't cause any weight gain. I really recommend Mirena, but do your research and find out what's best for you and your family.

Wish you all the best - God bless you!

Hi there. I chuckled a little reading your request...mainly because I too am that fertile!! :) Anyways, I was on that smae shot after my daughter was born, and then I finally switched to a 'chewable' birth control. I have problems with taking pills, but it really kept things on a 'normal schedule' and none of the unexpected bleeding or anything. I got off of that in Oct. and was pregnant by Christmas and am now due in Sept. I'm planning on getting back onto that one after he is born. I know that it works for me. Check into it...and see if it's for you. It's called "Femcon-FE". Maybe that will help! Hope it all works out for you!

Hi T., Maybe your best bet would be just plain old condums! There is no rule that says that YOU have to take responsibility for all the birthcontrol in your marriage all the time. Hand this one off to your hubby for a while! That's what I did after we had our third and before my hubby decided to have a vascatomy (I figured after 3 c-sections it was his turn! LOL) Congrats on the new baby!

I was going to suggest the NuvaRing but I see you tried that. My next option is Mirena - I haven't tried it but I plan to try it once this kid is born (due in Dec). Mirena is a very small, flexible device, so I wouldn't be too worried about it hurting you. There are risks and side effects as with everything, but I think they are pretty minimal, especially since you have all ready had kids.

There's always condoms! Which might not be a bad way to go along with a little cycle counting. Get to know you're cycle so you know when you're ovulating and use extra protection then.

Good Luck!

I would recommend you get a regular birth control pill, that lets you have a regular period every month. They work the best. You need to get yourself on a schedule. Take it at a certain time everyday, so you won't forget it. If you relate it to something else in your daily routine, it won't be so hard to remember to take them. I used them for 14 years and didn't get pregnant on them. If you are afraid of getting pregnant still with the current, I would recommend condoms. If you are using two forms, you are less likely to get pregnant still.
You don't want to get in over your head with too many children to take care of. Make it a priority.

I'm with some of the other girls! I LOVE MY Mirena!!! :) I am not sure if my husband and I want more kids, so that was the best option for me. I tried the Ring, the Patch, the Pills.... almost everything! By far this is my favorite. It was a bit annoying at first b/c you do get odd bleading when your period should be there at first, but I can actually say that it's been almost a year, and I don't think I ever want to have a period again!

I'd look into it, if you are not sure if you want another just yet.

I had the same problem with Depo and went off it after 6 months and went on Ortho cyclen, but that's a pill. I also was afraid of foreign objects in my body. The pill is bad enough!

Good Luck!
