I have a little guy who is 2, and I am due with #2 in October. Alot of people have suggested having a gift for him from baby and/or mom and dad while at the hospital or just home with new baby. I think this is a good idea- this baby will need all the sucking up it can get for my little "mammas boy" to let go of any of his mamma time. Just wondering if you all ha some ideas for gifts? I thought about a big brother t-shirt, but not sure if that would be a good or bad gift!! ha ha What else can you think of? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I think it's a great idea to give older sibling a gift.
We even did this w/my 11 year old stepdaughter.
I say the "Big Brother" shirts are cute but I would definitely give a toy:
Vtech laptop
Kid Quad at Target for $59. Buy a helmet. Goes 2 mph. Not as quiet if you let him ride it in the kitche but a hit nonetheless.
I like the idea of the hand puppet (prev post). Son got one. It's quiet and he loves it.
Congratulations!
Oh and make the toy not from you but JUST from baby!

The baby gave our oldest a hand puppet. Cute, not loud, fun to play with Mom and Dad.

ADD: I really like Kristy's idea although at two you have to be careful that they won't drop, crack, stomp on the bank. Additionally, there is a great piggy bank out there that I love. Check it out at www.msgen.com. If my kids didn't already have a piggy bank, this would be the one that I would buy.

Our DD was almost 4 when our DS was born last year. Since I was having a c-section, our DD received a gift each day that we were in the hospital from our DS. One gift was some watercolor paints and a paint pad. Another gift was a pack of cars from the movie Cars that she had been wanting. She also received a couple of books and a hula hoop (again, something else that she had been wanting). Overall, it didn't break the bank, but it made her feel special that her baby brother helped mommy pick them out. We told her that he would kick mommy when we passed something that he thought she would like. ;)

Another thing that one of my nurses did for our DD was to make her a hospital bracelet that said "Big Sister" on it since mommy, daddy, and brother were all going to have one. She wore that to daycare proudly every day! :)

She also had a couple of big sister t-shirts, and again, she wore them proudly.

Sorry, I didn't really answer your question as far as gifts go. I just shared our experience. For your little guy, does he like books? Is there a special toy that he would enjoy?

Good luck!

instead of gifts, we use goody bags in our family. A small diaper bag filled with baby care items for a small doll.....don't laugh, even boys love dolls & caring for them! The bag also has special treats for at the hospital: small boxes of raisins, pretzels, etc. Juice boxes or a new cup. A small box of crayons & a small coloring book. A book about babies or your child's fav type of book. & usually a special hat or tshirt...for the "big" sibling. Oh, & depending on the age of the child, we've also been known to include a disposable camera.....which is a blast!

Children love getting goody bags & it helps contain everything. & by using a small diaper bag, they feel like they're part of the baby too! Good Luck!

When our second was born, we brought a gift bag to the hospital filled with our 3yo's favorite things-(all individually wrapped)playdough, crayons, puzzles, gum, etc... After the baby was born we told him the presents were from his little brother. He was SO excited, because he really did think they were from him (still does!). It was neat watching him unwrap all of the presents and getting so excited that the baby knew what he liked!

When the baby was born, my SIL bought both the boys matching little shirts that said, "I'm the big brother and his name and a little cartoon picture of a boy on it. And the baby body suit said, "I'm the little brother and his name, with a cartoon picture of a baby on it. They are the cutest little shirts ever and our oldest loves wearing his, especially when baby has his on too!

I think the present idea really helped a lot because he has not shown one ounce of jealousy towards the baby and it's been 8 months. He really loves his baby brother. We also have instilled in him, that part of his "job" as a big brother is to watch over baby, and to help protect him. Also, to always show him love and kindness. It's so sweet watching the two of them together because there really is a brotherly bond happening with them already!

Good luck to you and your babies, it's fun watching them interact together! :)

as a teacher and a parent i recommend a baby doll. you can get him an anatomically correct boy or what ever. he can take care of his baby while you are taking care of yours. dont let others tell you he will become a sissy. girls play with dolls to practice being a mom, boys do it to practice being a dad. make sure to include your son in taking care of the baby too.

My son will be 3 yrs 5 months when my baby comes in October. We bought him a v-tech laptop (I think it was around $35) at Toys R Us that has about 40 different games and activities pre-loaded onto it. It looks really fun and I think it will keep him entertained while I'm nursing and busy with the baby. I had considered one of the leapfrog systems, but didn't want to have to buy all of the extra cartridges and stuff.

I also sell Discovery Toys and we have a lot of really fun (and educational) toys and games for toddlers. Our new fall line just came out with some great new products. Check them out to see if you can find him the perfect big brother gift! http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/karenchao

Congrats on # 2!

My son just turned 3 this week and we are due with his little sister at the end of October. Right now my son is really into coins....he loves putting Daddy's change away at the end of the day. So, his little sister got him a silver piggy bank with his name engraved on it. I know he'll be really excited to get his first piggy bank, and he will always have it. I wanted something he was interested in yet sentimental. That's just me. The Grandparents and relatives are all aware of the gift we chose and are excited to bring him coins for his piggy bank when they come to visit us at the hospital. Maybe he'll use his new fortune down at the gift shop? Who knows...Congratulations on your new addition.

When we had our second child, we had our 2 y/o give him his first teddy bear. (My husband had given our first a teddy bear when he was born.) the new brother gave his big brother a truck. It was so cute when they "exchanged" gifts. When our daughter was born, #2 gave her the first teddy bear. She gave her brothers picture frames to put photos in of her since they wanted a sister so bad!

Congrats on #2! I just had #2 in April and here are a couple things we did to help big brother feel special too...
*we bought Big Brother, Little Sister t-shirts before I had the baby to get him excited about becomming a big brother (he still loves to wear the shirt)
*While I was at the hospital Grandma took him to the store and got a toy for him and he got to pick a toy for his new sister (grandma set a $$ limit)
*After we got home we went as a family to build-a-bear and he built a bunny for his sister and then built a frog for himself

For us it seemed to help not just to give him special attention, but to give them both attention together to help him feel included. Good luck! He'll still be a mama's boy (mine absolutely is!!!) but they adjust. Enjoy!!
