My son was a big baby at birth, has anyone found any problems with the bigger babies, health wise? Apart from some dry skin, I have not found anything specific to do with the bigger baby,I am aware that some things a more specific to preature babies but , if anyone has come across something I should look out for would appreciate any information :)

Thank you,Lila A and Carla S, he was 10lb born, the pituatory gland, I had heard of, but did not occur to me to think about that, He is healthy, thankfully not obese, glad your children are growing well, he is on the 91st centinal, but his sister was the same so, all good, thanks again x

So What Happened?

Thank you all for replying, the main thing seems to be the growing pains from what you have said, his sister hashad them she is 10 now and already pubesant, big for her age and already borrowing my shoes, lol( I am only 5' 3" and she is up to the top of my ear already, looks like she is going to be leggy, tall and blond, where as I am shortish, and brunett :),) I find I have had to warn the older boys down my street off, they forget she is only 10 them being in thier teens, but had to start at some point. My boy like his sister is already cutting his teeth at 3 months,I appreciate all your responses for I know that they will be fine, hope all your children stay strong and healthy x

My son was big at birth and has always been at the top or off the charts. He has not had any issues whatsoever, aside from frequently getting growing pains because he grows so fast. He is 15 years old now and is 6 foot tall and 150 pounds and very healthy.

Hi T., you don't mention how big your baby is or what you are looking for. I haven't heard anything about big babies. I had a 8-15 lb baby girl, which is a pretty good size. She remains on the 97 percentile for both height and weight, but otherwise she is healthy. I have watch some recent programs that discuss an issue with a pituitary gland problem, where is continues to produce its stuff, which makes individuals extremely tall and that could cause an premature fatality. Otherwise, I haven't heard anything about being to big being a problem, unless of course we are talking about obesity. I usually see those type programs on TLC or health channels.

My son was 9 lbs 1 1/2 oz at birth, perfectly healthy and I had no gestational diabetes or any other problems. He's always been 95th to 99th percentile on the growth chart (I think he's off the chart right now). Now he's 11 yrs old in 5th grade , and he's 5 feet 4 inches tall (1 inch shorter than I am and he's the tallest in his class - he's even taller than his teacher). People frequently mistake him for an eight grader. His Dad is 6 feet 1 inches tall. Our pediatrician has told us our son has the potential to grow to 6 feet 4 inches tall. He's had a few years when growing pains were intense, but he's had no dry skin problems.

Please don't worry about your baby's size as long as you've had a healthy pregnancy. My 3 children were all the biggest babies in the nursery at 9lbs4oz, 9lbs8oz & 9lbs10oz, and they have been the healthiest of kids. Best of all, they were sleeping through the night almost the day they came home from the hospital. The worst problem I had with my big healthy babies was that I had to have a c-section with the first because she was stuck in a breech position - not surprising given my small frame - and she was born with hip dysplasia and needed a hip brace for 6 months (now plays soccer and basketball with the best of the twelve year olds). Genetics are so important - came to find out my mother was a 9 pound baby way back when, and so was I!

My first child (boy) was 9lb 4oz born , we had the dry skin too! We have no health issues to report on , he will be 7 in June and really quite small now. He weighs 42lb and is average height , he was quite big until about 18 months and then is slowed down and he has been a little thing ever since.

My son was 6#15 oz at birth. I only breastfed him for the first year but his check ups showed that he was in the 98th percentile. The doctor kept saying he was obese. I wasn't concerned because I was only breastfeeding him and I ate healthy. Sure enough, once he started walking, he was back to "normal". Good luck to you!

Hi T.,

My son was also born at 10 pounds. I have found no problems with him. He is at the 95%. Right now he is 28 months old and weights probably 40 pounds and is 40 inches tall. My husband is 6'3 and I am 5'9 so we are both tall people. Wait until your son is rolling over, crawling and walking and he will thin out. When he was born he had two herinas and his testicals did not drop. With the herinas, it was very painful for him to have tummy time. Which meant he spent a lof of time on his back. But he had double herina surgery at 4months and has his testicals tacked down and at 5 months he had to wear a helment because of not being able to have tummy time. It was a long first 8 months. But now, if you look at him, you would never know unless I said something. Don't worry, your son will be just fine. Everywhere I go, people tell me how cute he is with the cheeks you can just pinch (although, my son hates it).

Enjoy your son! They grow up WAY to fast!!!

Generally speaking, bigger babies are healthier...Unless their "bigness" is due to a medical condition. At 5'3'' and 100 lbs (my DH is no giant either) I was stunned to give birth to a 10 and a 9 lber. Both have had amazingly good health. They were born content and stayed that way. I think bigger babies are more ready to eat and sleep and so those first few months are such a breeze.

BTW -- Though my oldest remains taller than average, both of my "big boys" gradually adjusted to their genetic pre-disposed %tiles...Which means they are now skin n bones but eating us out of house and home : ).

Both of my children were over 10 pounds at birth and both came at 37 weeks! One is now 5 1/2 and the other 2 1/2 and both are perfectly healthy with no medical issues. Neither is overweight at all. My son was a little chunky as a baby, but once he started walking he really slimmed down. They are both above average in height, but no longer in the 95% or above categories.
