Bible Character Costume for 3 Yr. Old

My daughter goes to Awanas every Wednesday night at church and next week they have to dress up like a Bible character. My question is what do you do for a 3 year old to dress her up like a Bible character? She loves dressing up, so her wearing a costume will be no big deal, I just have no idea what to do. Any Moms out there that have done this or have some creative ideas for the occasion... I would love some advice.

PS when you ask her what her favorite character is right now she tells you Jonah, but she is 3 so that could change tomorrow!!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the ideas. Before I could even get back to check the responses she (with the help of her Nana) had decided to be Queen Esther. So tonight she will wear a hot pink satin tunic, a pink crown with jewels of course because she is a 3 year old girl, and a gold braided belt.. she is very excited and looks adorable in the costume.

What about a lion from Daniel and the lions den? or maybe an angel. A neat one would be Joseph with his coat of many colors. You could dress her in leaves and let her be Eve...lol, like pin a bunch of leaves on her out fit. What about Ester, she was a queen. Well thats all i can think of, hope it helps.

How about Noah? Make her a robe to wear and then safety pin stuffed animals to it. My mom did this costume for my little brother when he was about 5 and he won the costume contest at church :)

Bible costumes are fairly easy to do. If you have a childs bathrobe that becomes an overcoat, the tunic could be a piece of fabric (that will be measured from her calves to shoulders than doubled)that you fold in half and then cut a circle in the center of the fold for a head hole. A head covering is just a scarf put over her head and then thrown over her shoulder. I know that this sounds as clear as mud...but...I am in charge of a drama ministry at my church and we do Bible costumes all the time. You can email me if you need more help.

I have dressed my children as David with an over the shoulder brown bag (could use small brown leather purse)of 5 rocks or stones and a sling shot, also as one of Noahs animals, or and angel. Or a soldier dressed with all the armour of God!! Have fun, you'll pick the perfect thing!

Last year my granddaughter (3 at the time) choose to dress as Queen Esther. That is one of her favorite stories. Ask her what she would like to do and go from there. Costumes for Bible characters are super easy. You have really received a lot of great suggestions. Just be sure she can tell the story of the person (or creature) that she is portraying. I am positive whatever is chosen, she will be great!

The dollar store has swords, armor, helmets etc.

Also, I usually see bible characters in a robe. The women have a head covering that is a small blanket or something.

good luck

When we were little my brother went as Lazarus; my mom wrapped him completely in TP and he thought it was the coolest thing! I went as Martha because most girls go as Mary. She could be an angel; that would be cute.

a bathrobe for a tunic, a cuptowel for a head scarf and a baby doll, she can be Mary, or Naomi, or Hannah, or Moses' mother, add a streak of white shoe polish to her hair and be Sarah, the options are huge and most 3 year olds love baby dolls. My girls wore all of their favorite princess regalia and went as Esther(she might've dressed like a disney princess, ya never know) My son who was too old and cool for costumes cut out a large fish out of fabric foam and made a hat, so it looked like the fish was swallowing him head first, Jonah.

It is easy to make a Bible costume. Just take a piece of cloth wide enough to cover her shoulders and long enough to fold in half and come to below her knees. Cut a hole in the middle to put over her head and use a length of contrasting material as a belt. Then take a piece of cloth to put on her head with a stretchy head band to go around her head and hold the cloth on her head. Using some kind of cotton knit or other material that does not ravel much works best. Then just accessorize based on the character she wants to be. If she wants to be Jonah, then make or buy her a whale or big fish to carry with her. Or if you can find or make a big fish foam hat.

Job! He was destitute so you could get some dirty clothes, use makeup to give her boils, lol! I really like the Lazarus idea! If she loves Jonah, what about gluing fake fish to some clothes, getting some fake water plants from the hobby store and gluing those on? then, give her a Bible to carry (since he was a missionary)? Maybe that will look like she is covered in whale belly junk!

Go to the library and find a book of biblical names (often used for baby names). Then, use that as a guide to look up the "characters" in the name book to get some inspiration on dress by googling info on the name: what they did ("career") in the bible, characteristics, etc. At our church (catholic), we do the same thing with saints and I use a saint reference book for ideas.

Good luck!
