Hi Girls! My little one is moving up a size in clothing and we're all out of closet space. Time to buck up and put away his newborn and 3 months clothes for possible future siblings. What is the best way for me to store them? Thanks in advance for all your wise knowledge!

What can I do next?

I have been storing my child's clothes in the Glad XXXL bags and putting them in the garage for my next child.

You can also get the ones where you can suck the air out of them and store them under the bed.

whatever you do, do notuse moth balls. . . they can be dangerous to any age.

Cedar is a good alternative to keep the pests away.

Spacebags!!! I LOVE them. They come in many sizes and even in rectangle "boxes" now. You can put ALOT of items in them, throw in a dryer sheet for freshness and suck all the air out. They get really flat and you can store or stack them just about anywhere. Waterproof, bug-proof, mold-proof, etc. You can find them online, eBay, most drug stores and Walmart. When you open them up, the clothes "pop" back into shape. Good luck! K.

Hi AM,
Try the space bags, they are a really nice alternative to having stacks of plastic bins in your house.

Bless another family and let someone else use them -- by the time you want to use them again, the styles will have changed, colors faded, you will want something new and, etc. and when you do need some -- someone else will share with you!!!!

For a special christening dress, Christmas, birthday outfit, etc. I use acid free paper to store the item. Can be bought at The Container Store.

I didn't plan to have my kids 4 yrs apart but it worked out that way. I was sooo disappointed when I took the stuff out of the boxes-they had little yellow stains that would not come out. I later found out it was protein from milk!! The elastic in most items cracked.
I would suggest keeping some of the really special items, taking extra time to wash them and store them carefully. Toys never go out so you can save some of the smaller toys if you have room. I kept my big stroller but it was so musty and could not get the smell out-same with the playpen.
I would sell/give away your stuff now while it is useable and then get new when and if you get pg again.
I could not even give any of my stuff away and Ihad saved 4 yrs worth!! Now I only save a few jeans to pass on but most goes out the door.
BTW, I did learn if you buy better quality clothing, it will last longer. So it's better to have 5 quality garments than 10 cheapies that you have to replace sooner.

I saved a few special things but shared all my kids clothes with my sister in law and others and then when I had more kids so many people shared with me. I do not like hanging on to all that stuff and did not have room in my house. In the attic they get messed up from the heat.
I believe in holding things losely and more things come your way....

My daughter uses those boxes that are used to store reams of paper for offices. They seem to be just the size for those little outfits. She labeled each box: 0-3 mos, 3-6 mos. etc and that worked. only store the clean and unstained as you will get enough new with the next one to fill in.
You can store the baby toys the same way.

I was a linen buyer so keep this in mind....

All great advice, but warning.. Even though you have cleaned them and spot cleaned them, do not be surprised if a year from now you open the container and some of the clothes have stains.. Fabric does not always totally release soil...spit up, drool, milk, sugars... so just do your best with the cleaning...

I also used the plastic containers with no issues. I used the clear ones and slid a piece of paper down the side once all of the clothes were in there to identify what they were. Worked great for us!

For intermediate storage I used the big rubbermaid storage containers...each of my kids have a "to big box" as I like to buy clothes a season ahead...when they are on clearance. For longer storage periods, as in they will be there for years...( I kept a few pieces of clothes from each age group to make a quilt for them when they are older) I use the Space-bags.
they keep all air and moisture away from them and make them easy to store.

I stored baby clothes in a diaper box of the size he was wearing at that time--I bought diapers by the case.

I stored my daughter's clothes in rubber made containers with the size written on them with a sharpie. They stayed nice and my youngest wears her older sister's old clothes with pride now (they are 4 years apart, with a brother in between). I continue to use this method and it works well. Make sure the clothes are clean and dry before you store them.

Hi A M
There is nothing better than plastic bags for storing baby clothes. Be sure they are all washed and clean, then if you want extra protection- wrap them in something like saran wrap etc- then seal in plastic bags- then put them in containers for easy storage.....

Hi, I first had my little girls clothes in a box and that took a lot of space. Now I use the bags that you vacume the air out. I love them. I buy them at Wal-Mart and they're not that expensive. I will suggest you only buy the box with the Extra large bag or jumbo size bag. All the other sizes are too small and useless in my opinion. I have her clothes in these bags separated by size and they really take minimum space.

I would use the vaccuum bags that are for space saving. Since they are air tight, you shouldn't need to worry about musty smells getting to them. But, you can always add some cedar chips, balls, blocks to help. I used the zip lock bags for veggies that have tiny holes ( I don't know if they are still on the market) so the cedar chips wouldn't get all over the clothes.

The previous poster's idea is good, though I might add a dryer sheet or two to keep them from getting that stale smell from being kept sealed for a long time...The only other suggestion I have is that tv ad that offers space saving solutions for storage where is sucks all the air out of the bags... here is the link...

I buy old secondhand leather suitcases, clean them up, condition the leather, and store the clothes in them with some tissue paper. The cases look great stacked up 2 or 3, and I've even used one really good one for international travel! You can find these old leather suitcases on eBay fairly cheaply.
