Just use a Sharpie pen. Get different colors.
And also get the "Sharpie Rub A Dub" laundry marker for clothing.
Get the fine point and regular point, Sharpies.
This is the easiest way, the least expensive way to label and it lasts.
If on water bottles, and it wears of due to washing, I just re-write my kids' name on it, or their initial. And that's it. Easy.
I label ALL my kids' things, with Sharpie pens.

Sharpies in many colors. Usually it's just a black sharpie name on the inside of jackets and bags but lunches and stuff usually is decorated as they like.
I bought a label maker from Costco. Be sure to use the narrowest setting for the margins, otherwise it wastes a ton of tape by providing super wide margins. I use the label maker for plastic containers that go in the lunch bag, too, and they hold up just fine to dishwashing. For clothing and backpacks/lunch bags, just use a sharpie. Get an extra fine tip for clothing labels, but a regular one is fine for backpacks.
If you have younger children, just to put the last name when you label. That way, when my younger son gets hand-me-downs they won't have his brother's name on the tags. It also doesn't matter with the food containers if it's only the last name.

I also use Mabels Labels for my Kindergartener. I used a sharpie in preschool but don't like how the black looks and it's so dark and obvious (does that make sense?). My daughter picked out the design and we got enough so she can put them in her shoes, her jackets, bags, pencil boxes, etc. I don't have the nicest handwriting so I didn't want to be writing on all of that stuff.

Sharpie. But in the end, it doesn't seem to matter on most of the things since the teacher pretty much takes it up and distributes it throughout the year however she likes.
I've used Name Bubbles, That's Mine Labels and Kiddo Tags. They all work great and come in many shapes, sizes and colors. You can customize fonts and icons that go on the labels too. I've put them on things that go into the dishwasher and clothing that goes into the washing machine and dryer among many other things. Some examples of things I use them on are DD's books that she takes to school, her Thermos, lunch bag, backpack, coat and jackets, her swimsuit and towel for summer camp and her scissors and pencil box for school. Best of all - you can remove them whenever you want to. I even reuse them sometimes by peeling them off of something that we no longer need/use and putting them on something else.

LOVE these! They come in combo packs with lots of design options and sizes. We use them on everything. They don't come off in the dishwasher and the fabric labels are great too!

Why spend money on something that will probably fall off, anyway?
I just use your basic black Sharpie.
Then, when they have something that is black, I reach for the shiny Sharpies. They come in gold, silver and bronze (sparkly) also. So, for example, I use one of those for things like the inside of their backpacks. Typically, the lining is black... and I don't write my kids' names on the outside of a backpack or lunchbox.
I order the camp pack from www.lovablelabels.ca. Easy - peel and stick (including the clothing labels!) and they don't come off when you wash the item (in the case of water bottles, lunch boxes, pencil boxes, etc). I've been using them since my oldest was in preschool.
I use Mabel's Labels. I'm putting them on all DD's preschool gear, had them on all her daycare stuff, and even bought some for my mom (a preschool teacher) and my stepdaughter (for all her college stuff).
They last forever and you don't have to be nice to them at all. And their customer service is excellent.
My son's preschool teacher recommended this to me 4 years ago... write his name on masking tape and tape it his stuff. I've used it on jackets, on the inside of his backpack/lunch box, and the underside of his lunch thermos. The tape is easy to remove without leaving sticky residue, which makes everything easy to wash. We then reapply a new piece of tape after washing. So simple, inexpensive, and it stays on!
We use (and recommend) Name Bubbles. They stick well, don't wash off and are pretty, too!
Black sharpie, however if the thing that are writing on is black, trust me use silver sharpie! Son just went to middle school, we had to put his name on just about EVERYTHING!

I've used permanent markers and write their last name on an inside tag or inner seam so that the name is not visible to people walking by my child, for safety reasons. I have 3 kids, (nearly 13, 9 and 4 and it's worked well for all 3).
Name Bubbles works for us. We have to label with first and last name, and I don't want to cross stuff out for when we hand down our older daughter's stuff to our youngest. :) They're both dishwasher and washing machine (and dryer) safe....
sharpie on jackets I usually do it on the tag,I also instead of name use a shape to identify their items,name inside back pack and show them where it is,on all supplies that are not community.I seen that Post It has labels that i'll purchase to help me with preparing labeling my baby food.I have yet to use any type of sticky label since they can peel.
