Hi moms. After a lot of research I bought my son his first potty seat. He was used to his Bjorn potty chair so I bought a Bjorn potty seat. It does have a splash guard, but it doesn't seem to be helping. He's used it 5 times and every time his pee splashes over the pee guard and makes a terrible mess. Has anyone had better luck with another brand? I really appreciate your help. Potty training isn't fun for mom when pee gets on hands, clothes, legs and down the toilet!

We have the same seats and same problem. My husband nearly fell over laughing when I explained the problem to him (cuz little guy didn't have that problem with daddy). He said 'tell him to aim it at the water' - problem solved (unless he's not pointing straight). I never thought about asking him to point it down - but that solved the problem. Man - I never thought that understanding the equipment was a key component in potty training! ;-)

The $10 seat at Target that fits directly on the toilet worked great for us with all 3 kids (2 boys).

When I started potty training my son, it was a nightmare with pee everywhere and his clothes always wet. All the potty seats with removable pee guards, the guards fell off when he sat. The ones with permanent ones were too small and he peed over the top o them. My best purchase was a Peter Potty. It is a flushable toddler urinal. It was affordable then, but seems to be expensive and difficult to get a hold of now. My second favorite was the $4 Ikea potty. He never peed out of that and they were so cheap we could buy a bunch. Also, all one piece, so super easy to REALLY get clean.

We really didn't use a potty seat on the toilet because the guard never worked. My husband was like Melissa's and laughed when I complained. He explained the process (we're girls so of course we don't know) and it was much better after that. I also taught them to clean up the "miss" which helped their aim because they didn't want to touch the pee on the floor either. Good luck.

Is he old enough to stand up? Maybe get a little step stool or riser and have him stand.

My son is almost 5. He likes the Bjorn potty chair even though he is outgrowing it. I would love to get rid of it but he is still pretty attached to it. He will stand to pee in most situations where we aren't at home (or sit on the regular seat, no extra ring). One of my friends says she got her son to practice standing to pee with cheerios as targets. I drew a boat shape on a sheet of toilet paper and told him to sink the boat a few times to get his interest. We got a new toilet seat that has a regular size seat and a smaller child size one but it doesn't get much use so far. But who knows, I still have 1 more to train (a girl).

My son uses an Elmo soft potty seat that fits on the regular toilet seat. It works great! I love it! It looks like this one: http://amzn.to/ElmoPottySeat We have a footstool in the bathroom so he can get up on the potty. They sell them in Elmo also, but we just use one I had.
