I'm so excited to visit Disneyland for the first time with our girls (ages 4 and 2) but there are too many places to choose from when it comes to hotels. I'm still undecided between a hotel room and condo, however I'm leaning towards a hotel room since we won't be in there much. We definitely need to be as close as possible to the park so if you had a good expereince at where you stayed and the price was right (ideally between $100-$200/night) please share. Any other helpful hints about taking families to Disneyland are weclome.
Hi! We are going to Disneyland for the first time this fall! My step-mom is a travel agent, and she helped us choose the Anaheim Camelot Inn. It is RIGHT across the street from the main gate and it is a "good neighbor" hotel so you get to go in early and other perks with vacation packages. I think the rate is around $150/night. Have fun!! It might be more money than what you are thinking of, but we stayed at the Grand Californian when we were there back in May and we had a wonderful time! They have studios that are just a step up from a hotel room, since they have a small kitchenette area. They have their own entrance into Downtown Disney and another separate entrance directly into California Adventure, so it doesn't get much closer than that! The swimming pools were great too!
"Unofficial Guide to Disneyland" is great resource for visiting the parks and making the most of your time - they come out with a new edition every year.
I wouldn't really worry about distance if you can find a place along the shuttle line. You'll open up your options a lot if you expand your scope.
We stayed at the Doubletree and loved it. It's not right at the gate, though. With two young kids, you'd need to take the shuttle. However, it's a very nice hotel and we got it with a mini-suite ... our own bedroom and a comfy sofabed in the living space for the kids.
A friend of mine used a site I'd never heard of called Travago and got a stay at the Marriott there for $100/night. You might check that site out to see what kind of deals you can find. I know we spent a bit more than that for the Doubletree.
We just went to Disneyland last Nov and stayed a few blocks from the park. It was so easy for us, we had a rental car so we just parked in the Disney lot, then a bus picked us up from our car and delivered us to the front door.
My husband likes to try to get the best hotel prices on priceline or something like that, and like you, we never spend much time in the hotel when we travel, so it works for us.

I live close to Disneyland, so I only visit relatives in their hotels close to Disneyland when that's the holiday destination. The Howard Johnson has a great waterpark play area perfect for kids when you want a break from Disneyland. Also, my family has stayed at the Candy Cane, just short walking distance to the park.

The Embassy Suites are great and have a "free" breakfast in the morning. Right on the shuttle route.

We stayed at the Anabella Hotel. It's right across from Disneyland, it has a restaurant on the premises and there is a Coco's one block down, and it's on the shuttle line. We took the shuttle the first day but it was so close that we walked and didn't use the shuttle the second day. It's the 1st stop and last stop on the shuttle.

If you're a AAA member, try using their travel services. They helped us with our hotel and the park-hopper passes when we went to Disneyland last year (although we booked our airfare on our own). It was very helpful and there were a few extra perks/freebees thrown in for booking through AAA. And they also have some helpful tour books which are free to members. I first did some pricing research on their travel website.
Anyway, our family of 5 (children ages 16, 12 and 4) wound up staying i a 2-bedroom suite at Staybridge Suites, 1855 S. Manchester Ave., Anaheim, CA 92805, ###-###-####. They also have 1-bedroom suites. It's only a few minutes away from the parks. They are along the shuttle route (what is called the Anaheim Rapid Transit, or ART; you have to purchase a pass but it's really inexpensive). The hotel has a complimentary hot breakfast buffet so that helped to cut down costs because we always ate breakfast at the hotel. I would definitely stay there again. One note - if you intend to use the pull-out sofa bed, invest in a mattress topper. Hotel pull out beds are generally terrible - essentially springs covered by fabric. We bought an inexpensive 1 1/2" deep mattress topper that we bring with us anytime we know we'll have to use the sofa bed (this applies to any hotel chain!).
As someone mentioned shuttle buses do take you to Disneyland so you can better budget your hotel stay. I have heard really good things about Candy Cane Inn which is very close (I think walking distance of the park and they have a shuttle too). Check them out on yelp or travel advisor or their website.

Candy Cane Inn - It is right next to Disneyland. Clean, affordable, serves breakfast & has a pool. they also have a free tram for guests that takes you to Disneyland.
The Anabella is great! Very clean, nice pool, restaurant and bar and walking distance to the parks. Have fun!
I went to high school across the street from Disneyland. Its been torn down now and its an outside mall. lol Anyway, all the hotels in the area have a shuttle that will take you there for drop off and pick up. When you call the hotel, just ask them. Good luck!!!
