Hi moms,

I'm starting to look into joining a fitness center in the Naperville area and am hoping you have some opinions and advice. (I know I could call around, but I'm not interested in hearing several big sales pitches at the moment, just some honest feedback from mamasource moms first!) I would like a gym/fitness center that offers swimming lessons as my 4 year old desperately needs them. I also would like a facility that offers free or low-cost childcare while we are there for my 17 month old son. The biggest issue is price - we need something that is affordable. I know most places charge a hefty registration fee, but we don't have hundreds of dollars to spend each month for dues. Any feedback you can offer on Naperville area facilities (YMCA, X Sport, Lifetime, Edward, Rush Copley, etc.) would be great. Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you to everybody for your suggestions! After touring Rush Copley, Edward, XSport and Lifetime, we decided to join Lifetime. We thought they offered the most for our family at a reasonable price. My kids love the open swim and my daughter will be doing swimming lessons there soon. I also liked that they offer winter break activities and summer camps. I haven't taken any fitness classes yet, but will be soon. So far, we're very pleased with our decision. Thanks again for your help!

We love the Y. Once a year they have a free enrollment period. I am not sure when that is, but it might be the first of the year. The monthly fees are nominal and you can stop really at any point of time. Our twins take swimming lessons there - they LOVE it. As soon as they walk in the door they know they are going to get in the water.

For a membership at lifetime for my husband & I it was quite pricey each month about $110- & then we had to pay an enrollment fee on top of our monthly dues. I became pregnant 2 months later with twins & when I went on bedrest at the hospital, we could only freeze my membership & not my husband's, so I cancelled both since we worked out together most of the time. Since then, they have sent us many offers via email & by machine to rejoin & they would waive the membership fee if we rejoined. I know Lifetime offers free daycare while you work out, but I think for your 4 year old to have lessons there is a fee for the class. It's a clean facility in Naperville, & the pool is nice (indoor & outdoor). They have nice perks too like a party room you can rent if you are a member, rock climbing, & fitness class (for small fees)

Hi E.! I went with LifeTime Fitness. It is on the pricier side, but I think a junior membership (for kids under 12) is only $5/month more, and then you can use the daycare facilities and the pool, etc. If you say that you were referred by a current member and give their name, you can get a discount on your registration fee as well. For myself and my infant son, I was paying $65/month, but I'm pretty sure you get some kind of discount for a family one. If it were just you and the two kids, it would probably come out to about $70/month. Good luck!

Tbe Bolingbrook Park District is AWESOME! They have several types of kids/mom family classes and swim lessons and a child care. The best place around for families I think.

Clean, nice and affordable!

Good Luck

I have only checked out two. Lifetime and Xsport..... I choose Xsport. It is a lot cheaper than Lifetime and has much more equitment with TVs on them. I love that I am able to see my daughter in the play area while I work out. I would say stop by a couple of them then decide you'll never know where to go that meets your needs until you've been there. Good Luck!

We belong to lifetime and I love it!! My son loves the childcare center, I know they offer lessons and camps (although I haven't tried any) and they are open 24 hrs. For a family of four we pay $112/month. I don't know if that is pricey or not, but you do not pay extra for any childcare and we don't purchase a pool pass in the summer because they have an indoor and outdoor pool.

Rush Copley is FANTASTIC!! All the classes are inclued and I leave my 4month baby in the childcare (they have different rooms etc for the different ages) The cost for childcare is $2.50 per hour!!! I know they had free registration on for a while not sure if that is still on...they have sooo many different classes and as you don't have to pay it is great!!! They have a lovely pool, and warm therapy pool....
